I just read some more info on the DS and found out some pretty interesting things about it like the fact that one of the screens is going to be a touch screen and that it's estimated release is supposed to be at $150 or so which was a major supprise to me, I expected it to be more than that.Ayway, I was wondering if anyone had anymore information on the DS and hopefully a picture of maybe what it might look like, because I'm not even sure if they have released any pics yet.

Well, Annoyingly, i saw a pic in The Daily Record a few days ago, but the online article has no pics. I think it might have just been concept art, but it also had a pic of the PSP with it.. . for the article : http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/news/page.cfm?objectid=14235547&method=full&siteid=89488
I'm sure that somewhere, theres a pic...

and there is: http://www.usatoday.com/life/lifestyle/2004-05-11-nintendo-ds_x.htm
or http://images.usatoday.com/life/_photos/2004/2004-05/11-nintendo-inside.jpg for the DS itself

Edit
I prefer Sony myself mostly, and think DoW is the greatest game ever before its even out, but even i will agree with Neal: All E3's base are belong to Nintendo.

Search around Nintendo.com and you'll find more pictures and stuff. I am amazed at what this machine can apparently handle. There are pictures of a new Metroid Prime game...and they look the same as the GAMECUBE Metroid Prime. Apparently it handles images more powerful than the N64 could, which is incredible.

Not to mention the touchscreens, the wireless play with 16 players, and the awesome game lineup coming its way. This thing is going to rock.

E3 belongs to Nintendo this year!

I thought the DS would look stupid but it actually looks kind of cool. Not too sure abouth the touch screen but it will be something I"ll look in to. I wonder when they'll announce some titles. $150 may scare me away though.

Posted by: Neal 15th May 2004 21:55
According to one of my friends who went to E3, they have announced a new Zelda, a new Metroid Prime, and some Mario Kart/Mario64 games. I'm not sure if the last two are new or updated.
Edit
Also, according to a news source, a few games will include a new FF: Crystal Chronicles game, a sequel to Dragon Quest: Monsters, some Yu-Gi-Oh game, and a new Mega Man Battle Network.

That's it...I actually think this will own every portable game system out there and put them all to shame...from some other pictures I found I saw that Neal is right about the fact that it is able to support better graphix than the N64...I can't even begin to think what it would have been like to see a system this advanced ten years ago.Anyway check out the link and I hope you like what you see.
There is also a link on that page that will let you access previews of up coming software for the system...such as the new remade Mario 64.

We all laughed or cried when Nintendo made the announcement, but now that the theories have been debunked, the DS may very well put us all to shame. Goes to show that the secret little place in my heart that says that Nintendo is just as great as it was ten years ago can be right after all. With any luck, the DS could very well be the greatest handheld system ever, thereby falling in line with each Nintendo handheld that came before it.

I have to admit that I am a little scared off by the DS because I am afraid that Nintendo will ditch the GBA and that it will fall by the wayside and I'll miss the old school look that games have on the GBA.

Posted by: Neal 17th May 2004 04:20
It's still backwards compatible. It's apparently going to have dual slots, so you can play old game boy games, or the new DS games. But I know what you mean -- they were getting into a nice niche of releasing old, good SNES-era games on the system. But this one's capabilities will likely allow for more powerful SNES games like FF6 to be released. Obviously this isn't a promise, but a possibility.

Posted by: Sephiroth 17th May 2004 05:09
Yeah it was a good idea to make a hand held SNES (that's practicaly what the GBA was) but I also think that them remaking N64 games is a good idea... I have actually been waiting for something like this for quit some time although I think it's a little early to be remaking game cube games, I believe I saw Metroid for GC was going to be remade. Anyway, I think we have all basically agreed that this system is going to own if it's everything we expect it to be...I can't wait for the US release, I already have the money put back in the bank to get one.
Edit
Personally I even think the DS will own the PSP...from what I have seen from the psp it isn't going to be that great and it is going to cost a hell of a lot more.

With the N64 graphics, what do you suppose the chance would be that Nintendo would re-visit the Earthbound 64 project they were working on? Is the DS supposed to surpass the N64 (therefore making the advancements of of the DD without the DD possible) or is it supposed to be the same?

Edit
Sorry, missed what neal said.

From what I have heard it is suppose to surpass the N64...like Neal said

So I would assume they are gonna make the games better than they made them on N64, for example I think they are remaking Metroid for GC on the DS, so that says alot about what it is capable of. As for the making of Earthbound I don't know about that...if they haven't announced it then right now the chances are slim but things might change depending on ths sucess of the system itself.

umm the GBA was (still is) a 32 bit syastem and can support ff6 now, the only problem is the button conversion. snes = 6, gba= 4 huh.gif

After seeing these shots of the DS, I am officially more excited about it then I am about the PSP. My only worry is the touch screen, everyone has oils on their hands that will rub off onto the screen whenever we touch it. After awhile the touchscreen will look like crap what with all the oils on it. pinch.gif

I do remember hearing about a stylus with the DS, so maybe that'll be included in the shipping.

Anyway, I've never been a big handheld customer, but this just might change my mind. It would be very entertaining to have, especially after I move away in the Fall and won't have access to my own Gamecube.

I saw what it looked like, it looks like a damn nintendo controller. in S.P. form.

I think most likely that there will be a stick that would represent a pencil or something like that... take note that the drawings on the picture through the link I provided in an earlier post shows a drawn picture on the bottom screen of the DS system and it was obviously not done by a finger...the lines are to thin, so that tells me that most likely there will be some type of tool included with the system to enable you to use the touch screen without oiling it up with your hands.

i've seen the DS and the dual screens (hence the name) intrigue me. This could either be an inovative way of gaming...or just really confusing. i'm leaning more towards confusing due to the fact u use the stylus to move around. it's also going up against the PSP which should give Nintendo a run for their money.

Posted by: Elena1999 24th May 2004 04:33
Probably the one thing that's going to make the difference between me buying a DS and not buying a DS (aside from lack of money) is the expected RPGs for the system. I am hoping that Nintendo will go the route of the GBA and have a lot of RPGs and strat/RPGs for the system. I am currently more excited about the PSP because of this very thing. At least 4 or 5 RPG titles have been announced per IGN.com and most of them have some video footage that was shown at E3.

Do we have an estimated date for the release of the DS yet?

Posted by: Malevolence 11th June 2004 20:27
i read somewhere that the ship date will be 11/29/04 and it's starting price will be $199.99. the games are gonna cost $49.99, or so i read. hope that helps Seph.

It has a D-pad on it so I dont think you would use the stylus to move around. Maybe its just to manage things in your inventory or some thing. And I heard that i is supposed to ship for $150 not $199.

Posted by: Malevolence 12th June 2004 19:53
maybe i got the price wrong. also, some games such as Metroid Hunters will use the stylus to shoot and such. so i guess you won't use the stylus for movement.

I went to Game Stop in the mall today and the guy that was working looked up the DS on the Computer and told me that they release date was unsure because they kept moving it foward and backward... any way I had gone in to reserve one and he told me that they didn't have the reserve in the computer yet so I don't think we can be completely sure about the date yet. He said that the estimate of release was around September or maybe November.

Can't wait until all these hand-helds come out! Dry vacation drives into mindless entertainment!

Gamepro magazine estimates that the price for the DS will be at the cheapest $149 and at the priciest $199. The DS name is likely to change before production.

DS: Slightly better than N64 graphics
PSP: PS2 graphics, plays movies on new UMD format

The PSP might possibly cost twice as much as the DS but it will be the better system of the two as far as power is concerned. Developers can easily port PS2 games to the PSP, and many PSP launch titles will be PS2 games including Gran Turismo 4 (!). Will the DS's dual screens, low price and potential high quality game library make it the more successful portable system? It seems to me that the PSP will appeal more to guys in their late teens and 20's... you know, the ones running around with $300 iPods and such. Kids will be getting DS's from Santa.
