Anyone want to venture a guess as to when Phantom Forest plays in Final Fantasy VI? Yep, then. It's a mysterious, echoey theme with a high-pitched melody to set the mood of what is clearly a haunted place to be. This track had a decent run in 2010, winning a few rounds until clashing with The Decisive Battle, also from FF6.
This Prologue is the version found in Final Fantasy IV, and whether it's the best track from the series or not, you can certainly make an argument that it's one of the best-known. This one plays as Cecil starts out on his true journey, It was narrowly edged out by one of the Final Fantasy IV battle themes in the second round previously. |

I don't know if it is even possible for any track on FF6 to be underrated, but Phantom Forest is really one of my favorites in the entire game which already has so many fantastic choices (but don't typically hear of this one so much). Prologue has great nostalgia vibes, but Phantom Forest has the edge for me.

I was never a big fan of the Phantom Forest theme. It's nice but doesn't really evoke "hauntedness", nor anything other than a placid but not terribly interesting scene.
The Prologue from FF4 definitely outclasses it in my opinion. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. TMNT 3: Radical Rescue tabled: Lost Ruins |

Quote (TheEvilEye @ 9th November 2017 07:52) I don't know if it is even possible for any track on FF6 to be underrated, but Phantom Forest is really one of my favorites in the entire game which already has so many fantastic choices (but don't typically hear of this one so much). Prologue has great nostalgia vibes, but Phantom Forest has the edge for me. Yup same. It's become of my favorite tracks over the years, and was in the top 3 of my nominations. I think GMH is thinking about it the wrong way by considering it "haunted." For years when I played the game I found TPF odd as a dungeon theme because it doesn't have the typical "creepy" or "ethereal" vibe as much as others in the series, and was oddly sad and deep for a song that mainly just plays in a boring old cave without any background to it. Once I began deliberating on the significance in the name of the track though--"Phantom Forest" rather than "Dungeon" or "Figaro Cave", especially odd since the Forest sequence is incredibly short and you might not even hear the full song--it made me consider it from a different perspective, in that there is meaning to the song in particular toward the forest. So I would recommend to listen to the song not as a dungeon theme or something meant to sound "phantasmal", but as one representing the confusion and sorrowed longing of a lost soul finding themselves in this forest, surrounded by other confused spirits, reluctantly wandering their way to the afterlife, reflecting on all in their life that they are forced to leave. -------------------- I fear my heart and fear my soul Life goes on, it surely will, Without me and I wonder: Will I ever see light again?
