Wait, is this a thing? Did Square Enix really drop this on us out of nowhere, or have I been so oblivious that I just missed it? Either way, on Steam it is. There's a $14.99 "Limited Edition" Chrono Trigger for sale on Steam for Windows as we speak.

It's based on the iOS/Android versions of the Nintendo DS release, following suit from other SNES-era Square games that have made it to Steam. This means that it has the additional dungeon content and ending from that NDS version, so it's another opportunity to try that out and use the CoN walkthrough if you never have. Based on the screenshots, it looks like the art has been softened a little bit in this release, with the sprites not quite as sharp as one would remember from the older versions, but fairly similar to the mobile versions.

The system specs here are predictably low, and the price isn't bad for folks who haven't played CT before or have never had a chance to do the later-added content. Of course, it will likely show up in a nice big Steam sale pretty soon, too, so enjoy!

At first I was really excited as I have never played CT before and have been wanting too - but then I read all the reviews of the mobile port.. seems pretty hated..

I mean there has to be a console port version coming out for the Switch at some point you would think?!? haha

I saw this and I was like "whoa, CT is now on PC?" and then I saw the review score and I was like "whoa, wtf is going on?"

Seems like there are a number of issues, the most prominent of which is that the graphics are poorly filtered (they tried to blend pixels together but also tried to tile stuff anyway, leaving both sharp and smooth edges improperly juxtaposed), and the interface is almost entirely unchanged from the mobile version (including such messages like "emoji not supported" on the name entry screen and "please don't turn off the phone" while saving).

I should leave this here, though. Best review ever.

Here's a pretty informative run-down of the graphical design problems with the Chrono Trigger remake:

https://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/LarsDoucet/...ger_Edition.php

I agree with most of that. (The fourth point isn't...really much of a point by itself, as it has more to do with intent. I actually think I might enjoy the Secret of Mana remake more than the original game, assuming it has netplay...which I heard it doesn't but I haven't checked recently. But I'm certainly not a fan of this Chrono Trigger remake.)

Ooh boy, is this release getting shellacked. At least Squeenix is aware of its Steam reviews and seems to be trying to fix it. Still, you'd think they'd have cleaned up some of these problems before release.

SE doesn't care because they don't have to, and they want their annoying 35-45 year old original adopters to leave them alone please.

This is just all I can think anymore. Shitting on Chrono Trigger?

They are clearly finished with us and want us to leave them alone.

I couldn't in five minutes of Googling find out who engineered this port, and it's not like they ever send me a review copy of a new game. smile.gif

It obviously wasn't Square Enix themselves who made this, because they just don't do that - they (usually wisely) farm out that kind of work because it's faster and less expensive. And, it's worth noting, that this isn't something that you should dump on Squenix about, because it's just the nature of the industry. Even my office does that from time to time, and we're certainly nowhere near the size of Squenix.

I do find it interesting that it would appear that nobody from the home office did a QA pass on it, though - someone with enough knowledge of the game and the platform to give a fresh set of eyes. It's also likely that the team in charge of shipping this work to an outside contractor did a poor job of outlining exactly what was expected to change between the source and the output. I think that Squenix just learned a hard lesson in those regards, possibly enough to kill off any future similar ports entirely.

Modders are already working on it:

Makes you wonder why they bothered encrypting the files to begin with.
