I was wandering if anyone has beat the game with less than four characters: (killing off one or more of the four at the start of the game and never reviving him), and what their party was. The game got kind of boring and I thought it would be more interesting than doing 4 white mages again :-\.
I tried doing this before with a Fighter a Red Mage and a Blackbelt, but I only got to the Earth Cave before losing interest in the game and selling off all my NES gear. I'll probably get the PSX version soon to try this again, just for kicks. -------------------- -I like you- ...probably. |

I'm planning on a Black Mage ONLY game- Black Mage, Fighter x3 in the beginning, but have BM kill the fighters in a tribute to 8-bit. Though I've got to figure out a GS code to PERMANENTLY remove the fighters...

I beat the game with just a fighter once. It took about 2 extra hours to get through Ice Cave but it wasn't all that hard. That lone BM sounds like a tough challenge. Maybe the hardest challenge, but a lone BB would be hard too...hmm....

I remember my friend telling me once about all the different ways he played through this game. The one that stuck out most to me was the single Thief game. He played through the entire game using ONE AND ONLY ONE THIEF. This has got to be the hardest possible set-up, since thieves are, hands down, the WORST characters for a long, long time. Once they become Masters they get slightly better, but until then, they're bad. I would even go as far as to say a single White Mage would be easier since they can heal, have Fog and Fog2 which CAN actually be good when used multiple times, Ruse, for the same reason, and all the Harms.

The theif thing sounded really hard so I gave that a whirl, but to no success. Leveling up to defeat Garland in the Temple Of Fiends, I would always get destroyed by a lone Ghoul because of the paralyze if I didn't sucessfully run away. Although I did beat Garland around LVL 5 or 6, and am now charging up to do the Marsh, I don't know how the crap I'm going to get through some of the spots like the floor in the earth cave where the vampire is located (if I can manage to beat the wizards, or whatever they're called in the PS1 re-release). The Random Encounters with 9 Ghouls/Geist, and similar mass groups that can paralyze will most likely do the Theif in at least 90% of the time, unless he manages to run away before getting attacked. I will seriously have to Memo save every 5 steps to have anyhope at all (with finger crossing), and it would probably take more time than the bragging rights are worth to complete the game. Congrats if your friend really did that, but it must have taken forever.

I have never even ATTEMPTED such a game, since I knew it would be pure hell. Somehow he did it, though. I forgot what level he said he was at, but I remember it was massive. One would think that the best thing to do would be to become a Master before the volcano (this is now part of my normal playthrough), and then purchase Fast. Until then, though I have no idea how he did it, besides massive leveling. Good luck if you do decide to continue it.

Caesar, are you talking about a BB or a Thief? You say he was a Thief and then you say he became a Master. At first I thought it was just a typo in your first post, but you did it again, which makes me wonder. Clear this up foir me, please.

I can't imagine anything worse than a single black mage game. Theives can at least run from the tough battles and survive a hit.

Ah, but if the Black Mage survives a hit, it can hopefully kill off the monsters. The Thief on the other hand would probably die before killing/or after killing one monster.

Has anyone figured out how to kill chaos with a black mage / black wizard yet? The only thing I can think of is lvl 50 with 49 save'nreset +1 Str lvls + Masamune. Please help me out here. I know that the thief/fighter/wmage/rmage/bb challenges can andhave been done, but I don't see how a bm can take down chaos quickly enough...

A single Red Mage would be the easiest Single Character Challenge, its the only one I've tried. Even so, I find SCC's on this game to be rather hard since, depending on your level and how many enemies you are facing, you end up getting hit 3-9 times per round, while you can only damage one enemy at a time, until you learn the multi-target spells. If the fights aren't hard, though, they end up being long, for the same reason.
Hardest would be a thief, I'd think. Assuming you didn't class change, you'd have no magic, 3rd worst attack power, 3rd worst equipment. But you could run away alot... Jebus, though, one Thief vs. Chaos, without a Masamune. That would be ridiculous. -------------------- And behold, I saw a Pale Gaming System, and the name of he who rode it was Squaresoft, and Enix followed him. |
