OK, so we all know CoN is good enough to cover both versions of Final Fantasy I. My question is, which version did you like the best and why? (assuming you've played both, of course)

As for myself, I liked the PSX version (Origins) the most. It was loaded with extras, such as dungeons' treasure lists, original Amano art, and a complete bestiary. To top it off, it had the redesigned interface (killer spell effects), new sprites, an updated soundtrack, correct name translations, and even an easy mode for newcomers. With all these features it's difficult for me to see why some enjoy the clunky, slow, CAPS LOCKED, dialogue box-littered original, but I know more than a few who like it most simply for nostalgia's sake. wink.gif

I'm with you on the fact that the bonuses are awesome. You can't go wrong with bonuses and/or extras.

I on the other hand love the original. It was the first Final Fantasy that started it all for me. I was only 4 when I started playing it and I was hooked after that moment.

A true classic never goes out of style, and I still love to fire up my almost-defunct NES and play FF! every 3 months or so.... The game ruled my life for two years after I got it.

But the PSX version is a breath of fresh air that was much-needed. In it, weapons and shields and armor that give special bonuses actually work! If something says it's resistant to fire, it really is! If you cast Ice3 on an enemy in Gurgu Volcano, it actually does more damage than if you did it on an enemy outside the volcano.

PSX version, simply put, improved on a classic... and that's hard to do.

It's a really tough call. I have trouble playing the NES one these days due to the speed, but if I emulate it and use fast-forward, it's much better. I love the amount of work that went into updating the PSX version, though, and I think I have to give it the nod at least until the GBA version comes out (if it indeed makes it here to the US).

I voted for the original, simply because the 8-bit crystal theme and having to hold reset while powering down bring back memories for me... ::sniff::

i think origins is a very well-done remake, it looks nice and is more player-friendly, but i still just dont think it holds a candle to the original. sure, the cart version was flawed in a few ways, but it was still great and started a once of the best game franchises around (which after a while became kind of stupid and redundant, but we wont get into that.)

In terms of history, I have to respect the NES version, but when I want to play the original Final Fantasy, I have no patience for it. The Origins version puts most of my qualms to rest, so I prefer to play that.

I can't pick on speed, since both versions are slower than Forrest Gump. However, ePSXe lets me take off Frame Limits, which makes PSX the clear winner for me. Not to mention, the attack names don't completely suck in the PSX version (CRAK, anyone?).

Origins. I'm sorry, but after playing Origins, and then going back to the NES version, I just couldn't stand it. I probably don't like it as much because I never had it when it came out for the NES though...

I adore the NES version with all the classic sprites and nostalgia, but I hate it when your characters don't switch to another target if it has been destroyed. Sure, it adds strategy, but I'm bored of that strategy now. So... Origins.

I'd have to say i liked the original more. It was far more challenging. Save states and easy mode kinda ruined it for me =/ Also the easier level'ing, cheaper buying, and more casts of spells (like 20 was it? instead of the classis 9 max). Although I enjoyed origins just as much as the original, it was just just too easy for my likings cool.gif

edit: oh ya i couldn't stand the targetting system on nes, that made me enjoy origins a lot more tongue.gif and at the 3rd town i always exp'd till i had silver swords for everyone who could use it, so the price thing did help tongue.gif

Origins > nes. depends how you feel about the game i guess. i liked origins cause of the newer targetting system, the fact that you don't have to buy heal potions in singles, the fact that you got more magic slots. granted it was easier, but the nes version wasn't harder, it just took so much longer to sit and exp, so i liked that origins just speeded things up a bit.

Hey wow, you're right. I forgot that you could do that. For some reason I just never use save states in RPG games. I guess I've never found the need.

heh yeah i try to avoid the save state, i think it just brings in too much of the emulator scene. but i found myself using it once or twice just to save time. /shrug

PSX version was awesome ONLY because they didnt change the game base, they just added to it. That's why I hate the GBA release that's coming up. Once you begin to fuc around with the interior of the game, you piss me off... Stupid Square...

Of course you haven't even played the GBA version yet. It may be altered as you describe, and you probably won't like the changes, but hey... You never know. Sometimes it's fun to try something a different way, and you always have the other versions.

I like both, the original is harder by far. But I have to vote Origins, it's just such smooth gameplay.

I love being able to add to the Bestiary and Item list, that stuff rocks on Origins. oh and the ability to use the R and L buttons to move between characters, that is awsome too.

I prefer Origins. Mainly because it has better graphics, the sound is better, it has the Bestiary and some other neat features, the Advanced classes look WAY better than the ones in the NES ( the White Wizard looked like a Man, the Black Wizard looked like and old man), and the less important reason, I don't have a NES....

Hi, was just wondering what you guys' opinions were on the differences between origins and the regular NES version, I'm talking in terms of dificulty and level of fun, please no spoilers, I've never beaten the NES version, but I have gotten fairly far.

I just started origins, and it just seems like a much more pleasant experience, better organization and what not, seems like Final Fantasy I, just redone with the stuff they should have had in there, but didn't have the experience of making 10 of these games to know it.

I just got Dawn of Souls, and I love it. The new graphics, animations, and cut scenes are nice, and the music isn't as abraisive as the NES version.
I don't like the stat tweaking, which I assume came from FFO. I love the new dungeons and bosses (new items are aggravting, though). It's so easy, though. I keep having to remind myself that this is FFI, and it kind of lowers the fun factor.

In order from most liked to least:
NES
DoS
FFO

I would have to go with NES version.

First off, sure the names of the classes are kind of screwed up because of the four letter names but thats kind of cool in its own way.
Second, as far as I have seen, it is the only FF game in existence to use orbs instead of crystals.
Plus I also kind of like the way the adult classes look even though they are pixels.

In Origins, they changed the character images (cant remember exactly how, but they did), the orbs are gone and now they are crystal to be in sync with the other titles, and I cant think of anything else because after about 4 hours of gameplay and seeing how much they screwed this one up, I stopped playing it completely.

And whatever happened to FFIII? I see that they redid FFI and FFII on origins but why not put FFIII and FFIV on chronicles?

Not to sound mean or anything, but you all have no sense of originality.

Sure Origins is going to have better graphics and music. Look at the platform your playing it on. The only reason the extras are on Origins and not the NES version is because of the size of hardware the game was being put on. 660 meg vs maybe 50. And thats a big maybe.

PS Graphics: 32 bit
PS Sound: 24 Channels

NES Graphics: 8 bit
NES Sound: 4 Channels

I love the NES version, although I am too young to play it on a real NES. I hate how easy they've made things in DoS and Origins. And I likes the 8-bit graphics and Ineffectives. I can usually minimize myself down to one or none a battle, which I think is fun.
