Caves of Narshe Forums > Final Fantasy I > what classes did everyone pick?

Posted by: Zeromus_X 11th October 2005 00:54
what classes has everyone here picked the first time they played , and since then?

i started a new game a while ago, with this party(on the nes of course smile.gif)
fighter/ desh
(throw rocks at me now)red mage/ cid
white mage/ eiko
black belt/ yang

im currently trying to get the floater before the volcano. i did that the last time i played through, and i succeded(thank goodness for treasure traps and provoka peninsula! wink.gif)

my party is at lv14-15, probably too low, but hey, always up for a challenge biggrin.gif

My favorite job combo was:
Fighter
Black Mage
White Mage
Monk

I've also tried

Fighter/monk (can't remember)
Monk
Monk
Redmage

Posted by: karasuman 11th October 2005 02:32
The first time I played, I picked Fighter, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage. I didn't get very far. My husband used the same party and mopped the floor with the bad guys. Go figure.

Posted by: dont chocobos rule? 11th October 2005 02:32
i had a hard time picking the most balnced (what i think it is anyway)(i had the PSX version)

Warrior/fighter- Squall (cause he's my favorite fighter)

Red Mage- Cloud (because a red mage is kind of a Jack-of-all-trades...and so is cloud supposedly)

Black Mage- Vivi (fav black mage tongue.gif )

White Mage- Celes (because I remember the first spell i used a lot with her was cure)

Posted by: Barrylocke 11th October 2005 11:15
I only did the default, Fighter, B Mage, W Mage, Theif.

Posted by: laszlow 11th October 2005 12:25
Two fighters, a white mage and a black mage. The names, respectively, were BULL, JACK, ROSE, and MOON.

Posted by: jfjksdl 11th October 2005 12:32
Like laszlow, my favorite combination is Fighter, Fighter, White Mage, Black Mage. I used to like the Black Belt in place of one of the Fighters, but his poor defense made me change my mind. The Thief is just a less powerful version of the Fighter who can't use as many weapons as the Fighter, so I never liked him. Like any jack-of-all-trade, the Red Mage is a master of none, and that becomes clear when you want to get the most powerful spells.

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 11th October 2005 13:37
My first game was:

Warrior: Beoulv
Theif: Austin
White Mage: Hart
Black Mage: Seth

I never finished this one, opting instead to create a new game that I am currently playing (up to Melmond and the southern cave):

Warrior: Laguna
Monk: Cid
Theif: Baku
Red Mage: Elmdor

This set-up is a lot of fun. The Monk and Red Mage are my favorite classes and are so fun to work with.

Posted by: footbigmike 11th October 2005 19:07
Hmm, first i used the default Fighter, Thief, Black mage, White mage.
After i completed it, i did Red mage, red mage, Black Mage, White mage.
When i completed that, i did monk, thief, thief, Red mage.
I have also done a Fighter, White mage, Monk SCC, and attempted a Red mage Solo character challenge.

Posted by: Kane 11th October 2005 22:31
Fighter
B. Mage
W. Mage
Monk

Posted by: Kimahri 11th October 2005 22:41
Fighter- Arvis
Thief- Vance
White Mage- Ayla
Black Mage- Vivi

Heh, tried to make the names sound cool.

Posted by: sartael138 12th October 2005 02:34
Can't remember the names but I used:
Fighter
Thief
White Mage
Black Mage

What I am comfortable with isn't much different

Fighter
Fighter
White Mage
Black Mage

Posted by: Perigryn 12th October 2005 03:57
I'm getting my way through FFI now for the first time and I've got mysef:
Warrior/Fighter - Duiker
Monk/Black Belt - Noah
White Mage - Ganoes
Black Mage - Darien

One I realized that the Monk'd be better without a nunchuku, it became a kickass party. So I'm pleased, except when whitey dies since stupid FFI has NO OTHER LIFE-GIVING MEANS! FLKNB:LDFNBF *string of cursing*

Posted by: red_beard_neo 12th October 2005 05:05
First FF1 party was Fighter, Thief, Wh.Mage, Bl.Mage -- long since forgotten the names, this was shortly after the US release.

Favorite combo would have to be Fighter, Wh.Mage, Bl.Mage, Bl.Mage. Keeping the Wh.Mage alive in the #2 slot can be challenging sometimes, but generally stuff doesn't live long enough to do too much damage.

Posted by: Worldwyrm 12th October 2005 14:49
I had picked a Black Mage, a White Mage, a Monk, and the Warrior. Just a balance of power and magic. The warrior is an always because he can use almost any kind of weapon. happy.gif

Posted by: Cloud_Strife510 14th October 2005 00:57
Thief;Locke(take a wild guess)

Warrior; Auron(.......)

Warrior; Kain(simple, cool, and 4 letters long)

White mage; Rose(simple, first thing that came to mind)

Posted by: LordTeeJay 14th October 2005 01:14
well, this is my first game, and so far, im liking it.

I went with:

Fighter - Doma
Thief - Kelga
White Mage - Kuku
Red Mage - Yura

Wishing i went with the black mage instead of the red though dry.gif

Oh, I know, I read the instruction manual that came with the NES cart way back in the day. wink.gif The issue is, with Fi-WM-BM-BM, what am I gonna put there? One of the two Black Mages? That'd be worse! blink.gif

Posted by: Kulatu 14th October 2005 18:08
My first party was:

Fighter
Thief
White Mage
Black Mage

Then as I grew more experienced I went with three others that quickly became favourites:

Fighter
Red Mage
White Mage
Black Mage

Red Mage
Red Mage
Red Mage
Red Mage

Black Belt
Black Belt
Black Belt
Black Belt

The Black Belt/Red Mage parties are actually quite difficult to succeed with in my experience.

Posted by: Iain Peregrine 19th October 2005 13:30
Fighter
Theif
White Mage
Black Mage

That was my first party. I recently bought a new FF cartidge, and have been running through the game with that party again. I think I once did an all fighters party, but that was too easy; I think I gave up on it half way through because it was so easy.

Posted by: Trox 19th October 2005 18:42
Red Mage
Fighter
White Mage
Thief

This is my party set up for bout half the game but i changed it lol this is my favorite one tho

Posted by: Snowman 20th October 2005 20:42
I used:

Fighter:Liam
Thief:Mark
Blk Mage:Ro
Wht Mage:Lu

Until I lost it... pinch.gif sad.gif

The search is on... First place - the bedroom!

Well it needs tidying anyways.

Posted by: ramza_beoulve 27th October 2005 21:02
the party i like to use:Fighter
Thief
White Mage
Black Mage
i feel this is a pretty well rounded party.

Posted by: Zero_Hawk 27th October 2005 21:52
For me I always have a variation of a particular party.

Fighter - Hawk
Thief - Zephir
Monk - Tommah

The last one changes with the playthrough

Black Mage - EmGee
White Mage - Neal
Red Mage - Bobbo

Last playthrough I used Neal, and given his performance, I think he might have earned himself a permanent role. Ahhh man, the stories I could tell. He's the White Mage that could.

Posted by: byblos 28th October 2005 02:35
I remembered back in the day, the names were...

AAAA - Fighter
AAAA - Theif
AAAA - Black Belt
AAAA - Red Mage

It doesn't take that long to form that party smile.gif.

But I've done 4 Fighters, 4 Black Belts (Pretty interesting, no weapons), 4 Black Mages.

First party ever was Fighter, Black Belt, White Mage, Black Mage (So I can try out all the magics)

Posted by: madmangunner 15th November 2005 20:58
i chose a warrior, a white mage, and a black mage.
they are the basis of a normally pretty good team.

Posted by: Moglv99 17th November 2005 23:29
The most usual party was the default party, ( Fighter , Bl. Belt, Thief and Red Mage, which works pretty good, and the classical party of Fighter, Red mage, Black Mage and White Mage. Someone here tried four Fighters??? happy.gif

Posted by: Luna 18th November 2005 12:26
First time I used White Mage, Black Mage, Thief and Monk. Works pretty well but at the end of the game magic is so !@?# expensive!!! I always give my characters cool names too, like Luna. That's a good name. smile.gif

I find it funny that people tend to name the characters of certain classes as the names that were characters from other Final Fantasys..

I always just name the characters after my friends and I... laugh.gif

Posted by: Kylerocks 8th December 2005 22:15
On the old schoolish NES:

Fighter (named after brother)
Thief (me, obviously, for my uselessness)
Monk (can't remember...)
Red Mage (Ted?)

Posted by: RoughknightVII 16th December 2005 17:18
I played on the Playstation Origins
Warrior - Dan
Red Mage - Darren
Ninja - Vivi
Ninja - Tyler

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 21st December 2005 16:28
I started anew with a different set-up (FFOrigins)

Warrior: Bret
Monk: Sid
Red Mage: Dell
Black Mage: Kane

I've felt it out of place to have a black mage without a white mage, but the Red Mage is my favorite character class and the Monk is powerful and inexpensive, it's a sacrifice I'll be willing to make. A replacement of the Red Mage to the White Mage would be my next game if this one doesn't work out for me.

Posted by: thatbadazzmage 21st December 2005 17:57
ok
black mage- me biggrin.gif
black mage- tamer
black mage- weston
black mage- connor

yes, if you are wondering, it was hard to do,
but now my characters kick ass.
i still wouldnt recomend it as you have to level up like a crack addict. and believe it or not, magic is expensive at first.

Posted by: master_tonberry 22nd December 2005 03:15
blackbelt-Duncan
fighter-Nick
redmage-Moses
thief-Baku

I recently started a game like so:

Fighter
Black Belt
Thief
Red Mage

Its not a super challenge or anything, but I think it might prove interesting.

Posted by: thatbadazzmage 22nd December 2005 20:09
DoS....its not easy though. low attacks and hp make it near impossible. but ya, white mages probably would never work.lol

oh and wildhalcyon, that party probably wont work. you gotta have the magic man. you gotta have it.

Posted by: Berserker 31st December 2005 09:16
I think I tried White Mage[Kami], Black Mage[Yuki], Thief[Mana] and Fighter[Kozi] at first and found this hard because of the Theif's very low abilities.

I changed to W. Mage(Kyo), B. Mage(Kao), B. Belt(Tosi)<- (*couldn't fit Toshiya, for you Diru fans) and Fighter(Die) and beat the game pretty easily though I thought the lack of strength in my mages was obviously a handicap up until the very very end.

I tried again later and only had slightly more difficulty with the Thief instead of the B.Belt.

I'd like to try this again with two fighters and my 2 mages. I think the added strength combined with the best defensive armor will more than make up for the lack of attack power in the mages up to the end.

I find the White Mage almost fully useless but I can't give him up just because I think that he looks cool walking around on the main screen. That pretty much did me in since that had him at the front of the line of fire. XD I couldn't help myself.

Posted by: thatbadazzmage 4th January 2006 08:12
ok for one, the white mage is female. duh. second, worthless? ya if you dont like cure or heal. the white mage is your entire defensive magic stucture. you hafta have a white mage. a black mage you can do without, but the huge offensive magic abilities are suicidal to give up.

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 4th January 2006 13:17
My original party was

Warrior: Laguna
Monk: Cid
Theif: Baku
Red Mage: Elmdor

It jus' didn't seem like Final Fantasy 1 w/out a White Mage or Black Mage, so I'm currently workin' on this one:

Warrior: Bret
Monk: Sid
Red Mage: Dell
Black Mage: Kane

I like this party, 'cause the Monk is a great character for his power and inexpensive equipment and the Red Mage is my favorite character. I chose the Black mage over the White Mage 'cause I figured the Warrior will eventually have low-level White Magic available, but until then, I'm even more limited with it. I'm still relatively early on in the game, but the best set-up for me is to replace my favorite Red Mage with the White Mage, but I'll give this one a shot first.

Posted by: thatbadazzmage 7th January 2006 23:25
actually that party should work...you can still have low level white magic with the red mage, and your offensive magics as well. however, i never have favored the monk.

Posted by: ultimage 8th January 2006 03:11
I'm currently working on a single Black Mage game. I named him Ford.

I also have another party I'm working on just for fun:

Black Mage: Devyn (Celtic. means Poet)
Black Mage: Jabril (Arabic. means Gabriel, as in Arch-Angel)
White Mage: Gadiel (Arabic. means God is my wealth)
White Mage: Calum (Celtic. means Dove)

All names are for males BTW. I don't like chicks in my parties if I can help it laugh.gif

I just played with two characters: a black belt ("DUDE") and a red wiz ("WOAH").

Dude and Woah lasted up until the final dungeon, then things got rough because they were underlevelled. I was planning on adding (read: reviving) a fighter ("ROFL") because I didn't want to level (LLG) but never got around to playing it again.

My other char, never used, was a white wiz ("ASL ")

Posted by: NeoEx-Death 7th February 2006 21:11

Knight
Knight
White mage
Red Mage

I don't remember my first four classes, it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when. Most current:

Black Belt/Monk
Thief
Black Mage
White Mage

Sometimes I think I should have included the Fighter... and then the class change... and I still think I should have included the Fighter.

Posted by: crazymoronx 20th February 2006 21:33
Originally, I went with 1 fighter, 1 blackbelt, 1 white mage, and 1 black mage. It did alright, I suppose.

On the first remake, I went all blackbelts, it was rediculous. They destroyed everything, until they got killed, then it was hard reviving them. But they still raped.

On the second remake, I went 3 blackbelts, and 1 fighter. A little better than the other team of all blackbelts.

Posted by: William 26th February 2006 15:48
I generally dislike magic users in games. I'm not sure why. I just do.

Hence my party:

Fighter
Fighter
Black Belt
Black Belt

I don't remember the names I gave them though, although I'm sure one of them was named "Will". But yeah, it wasn't that hard. In fact, I find it easier to play with a party like that or 4 Black Belts/4 Fighters than having magic users in my party or even a thief.

Play the original or normal on Origins, and tell me if you fiind it easy wink.gif

Yeah me friendly has the original FF cart for NES. It's way tougher than DoS.

Not only is leveling and equipment harder, you don't get free blast-the-crap-out-of-everything-for-free weapons like judgement staff. Then there's the whole "alrighty I got the airship WTH DO I DO NOW!!!???" there is very little pointers on what to do.

As for my first party:

Monk
Theif
Red Mage
Black Mage

Newest Party
Theif

I tend to stick with defaults.

Fighter - Jaster
Thief - Gambit
White Mage - Kenobi
Black Mage - Vivi

Slight step up from the NES days. I think that was:

Fighter - SLIM
Thief - REMY
White Mage - JEDI
Black Mage - NOOB

Posted by: Zeromus_X 4th March 2006 06:37
I got the chance to borrow Origins, so I naturally did a new game.

Thief- Alex

Fighter (?Warrior? Meh.)- Joe

White Mage- Erik

Black Mage- Ian

Me and all my friends' names tongue.gif

I just thought about this, these names would work for the original too...though I dare not save over my old NES file ! biggrin.gif

the red mage (Marle)

I recently started a save on the totally smeg-ified Dawn of Souls version:

Black Mage: Macbeth;
Black Mage: J. Joyce;
Black Mage: F. Kafka;
Black Mage: Banquo.

As you can see, hetrogenous my party is not. But it's been mostly fun so far- even though it did take over seventeen hours just to get past Lich.

Posted by: Billdolfski 26th March 2006 19:55
I really use all of the classes. I always have at least one fighter though, as the game can be rather annoying without one. They are the most powerful class by far.

Red mages comes in second because of their versatility. They can cast a variety of useful spells as well as wear enough weapons and armor to not waste a turn if they attack.

BB/Masters are great once they have some levels... their damage will even surpass that of a fighter. Just don't forget about the black belt armor bug!

Theives suck. Period. Worthless class. No magic. Poor defense and equally poor offense. They are supposed to be efficient at running, but a bug in the game invalidates their one and only useful skill. Aside from all the crappiness, they have to option at class change to become Ninjas, who don't suck nearly as bad. Good weapon with good critical, good armor, good stats and some useful black magic (Fast).

White mages can be an assest to the party. Their attack and defense leave something to be desired but they have decent enough hit points along with some useful spells not available to the Red. Spamming Ruse will make this guy near impossible to hit. Later on in the game, once certain items are required... you will find your whites more useful and wasting less turns (the pure magic users are kind of worthless when you aren't casting a spell... and spell charges are anything but infinite in this game).

Black mages are possibly less useful than a white. Sure, black magic is very powerful... the only way to wipe out groups of enemies at once... but the Red mage can cast most of the offensive spells that a Black can. Well... the black should be better at it, right? Nope... bug again. INT doesn't do squat. Another character with wasted turns when they are not casting spells. Certain items will help out with this but I'm just not sure if Nuke and a few extra spells are worth all the hassle. Get a red instead.

That's my reasoning on all the characters, but I'll use whatever just for variety. I've played through several times... I've had the damn game since I was in the fourth grade.

I'm playing DoS, and my party is as follows:

Fighter
Thief
Red Mage
Black Mage

I started the file a long time ago, back when I used to have zero patience for healers, hence the RM. I haven't played it past the fire crystal. I really should pick that game up again and keep going. I was pretty much kicking everything's ass.

Posted by: EdgarFigaro 31st March 2006 12:11
I used:

Fighter - Dan
Black Mage - Zach
Black Mage - Seth
Red Mage - Nate

Believe me, you don't want this party 8-(

Posted by: byblos 10th April 2006 22:39
I'm going to go for an all Black Belt party, and see how powerful I can get them to be. I just need weapons and armor that act as spells, so no need for magicians, and they have good natural armor at high levels.

Posted by: You Spoony Bard! 10th April 2006 23:09
lets see... I had
Knight- Baron
Red Wizard- Gill
Master- Duncan
Black Wizard- Delila

Then, I almost won a crisp 20 when I nearly beat it with four white mages, Noah, Ruby, Sarah, and i forgot the last one's name. I coulden't beat the Mirage Tower, so I tried again replacing a white mage with a thief. After the class change, it was too easy

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 11th April 2006 06:08
I started anew after I lost all my PSX memory card data not too long ago, so I'm currently playing:

1:
Warrior: Laguna
Monk: BigSid
White Mage: Hart
Black Mage: Zues

2:
Warrior: Hyral
Monk: Austin
Theif: Titus
Red Mage: Dell

My first game is the perfect balance between physical and magical prowess before class change, while the second one is more physical with a touch of magic and even slightly more after the class change. I just can't bring myself to play FF1 and not have at least one Red Mage in a game.

Posted by: byblos 12th April 2006 05:18
I just realized how unbalenced Black Belts get by level 10, and they just get exponentially better. At level 32, I could do as much as 1300 damage without any spells (That is 8x Hit). But I'm going to level up to level 64 - 65, so I can do 14x Hit with a natural armor equal to that of level. By then Evade would be 90ish and, yea Black Belt with no armor and weapons is even stronger than fighter. Evade helps alot, and with space for magic items, this is the best you can get.

Fighter/Knight doesn't seem to be so good anymore, nor does Red Mage or any other classes. I'll probably test out a 1 Theif and 3 Black Belt party, mainly cause Ninja (future theif) can cast FAST on the Black Belts, which would make me be able to do 20x hit by level 43, pretty much lethal to anything except chaos (and WarMech would probably die in one hit).

One reason I don't like Red Mage so much is that the most useful spells like LIFE, LIF2, WARP, EXIT cannot be learned. LIFE and EXIT are really useful for dungeons and so that all my characters level up at the same time instead of some losing experience when slain.

EDIT- No I was wrong, I killed Chaos in 2 hits, 1200 damage only with Level 44 Masters. I also realized that the health of Black Belts do not cap around ~850 like fighter does, so at level 50, you would rather have a Master than a Knight (50 armor, ~85% evade, 2000 damage @ 10 hits, ~980 Health). What's sad, is that equipping Masamune to one of the Black Belts made them weaker (in damage per hit).

Posted by: Izlude262 18th April 2006 16:44
knight
Ninja
Redmage
Whitemage

Im suprised how many people get black mages considering there only use late in the game is temper and haste which a red mage can do much better and a redmage can also do great damage with a lightbringer.

basically for normal encounters i just attack, and i gave my white mage a masamune so he can hit in the 600's. and for bosses my knioght uses giants gloves for saber, then ninja hastes knight. redmage casts protera white mage spams healaga every turn. after that knight attack every turn ninja and redmage temper him every turn and whitemage healagas every turn. plus redmage can also use healara if extra healing is needed.

My current challenge, on the DoS version -
Four White Mages
No Class Change
Equal Experience
Reverse Fiends
Immediate SoC Dungeon Entry
All Sidequests Complete

...item spam much? rolleyes.gif

Anyway, their names are Sophie, Alina, Jessa, and Maia.

I chose a thief
A warrior
A White Mage
And a Black Mage

I thought that was a good party becasue you have Warrior for power, White mage for healing, BLack Mage for powerful magic, and a thief for speed.

Posted by: tesco 24th May 2006 23:39
Knight: Tisken
Ninja: Tesco
White Wizard: Lily
Black Wizard: Rork
They'll all lvl 99 and can destroy all opponents

My first party on the PSX was

Fighter - Fiter *shot*
Theif - Thief *also shot*
White Mage - WM *kicked*
Black Mage - BM *slapped*

I'm not much for origional names.

On the NES, my first party was

Fighter: Dan *face!*
Theif: Cid *[adjective]*
Red Mage: RM *Fir2*
Black Mage: BM *organs harvested with a plastic spork*

I did pretty well with that party.

In Dawn of Souls my Monk/Master was hitting for 2000 to 4000 damage without booste. With Haste and Temper cast on him... Ouch.

I think they all have their bonuses. So I have a setup like this...

Fighter (always)

Thief (Black Belt in the PS and GBA games. He can very quickly overpower the fighter)

White Mage (always)

Black Mage (Sometimes but rarely exchange for Red Mage)

Posted by: Bulbonius 5th July 2006 11:57
Hmm, well my personal favorite combination, and the first party I beat the game with, was Fighter, Black mage, white mage, and blackbelt.

Although I've never beat the game on the nes, just the gba. Supposedly the nes version is much harder.
I should download it.

Posted by: Angry_Midget 7th July 2006 16:59
Jesus Christ, enough "Fighter, ______, White Mage, Black Mage" s here?

Since ninjas are the best group in the universe, I used a party of four of them. I've beat the game around level 30 with them in the NES version, and my party of 4 ninjas on the GBA version are around level 84 (trying to get to 99 . . .)

Other parties that good players should try:

4 White Mages
4 Black Mages
4 Black Belts
1 Fighter (let everything else die, and never resurect them.)
1 White Mage 1 Black Mage (same for 1 fighter rules)

I've beaten the NES version with all these parties, and am working on beating Dawn of Souls with the last one.

I don't remember their names, but I remember their classes. They're knight, master, ninja, & red wizard. I've beaten the game, and everyone's lv.99(w00t!)! I'd check their names, but my big bro brought DoS along for his Europe trip sad.gif

I also enjoy Fighter, Fighter, Thief, White Mage.

The reason I like this party is that everyone can use magic after class change, and the party is well balanced between physical and magical abilities. I never cared for the Black Belt, because he doesn't gain any new abilities at class change. (He just gets a little stronger.)

My favorite magic-using party:

Red Mage
Red Mage
White Mage
Black Mage

My favorite physical party:

Fighter
Fighter
Thief
Black Belt

I'm not kidding when I say this, every version of FF1 I've played (NES, Origins and DoS) I have had an entire team of white mages, and I've beaten the game that way without cheating in any way shape or form... Given it was EXTREMELY difficult, but I did it. Nothing against Black Mage or anything (because he's just great), but Four White Mages, it really can work...

Posted by: elevatorrider212 3rd August 2006 20:52
I personally liked

fighter

fighter/black belt

red mage

black mage

although red mage cannot cast as much white magic or as efficently as white mage, i like having another member who can deal some serious damage but who can still heal the team. you do loose spells like heal, which is a biggie, but i beat the game easily with this team.

Posted by: FF Master 3rd August 2006 21:41
I usually have either...

Fighter
Fighter
Fighter
White Mage

-or-

Black Mage
Black Mage
Black Mage

I like a party with all the same strong points and class, but I always have a White Mage in the party no matter what. That's just.....me! cool.gif

I first played this game when i was 3 years old. I went down in my fathers basement, found a box with all his nintendo stuff, along with a broken Nintendo. So, I went yard-salin', and found a working Nintendo for 10 bucks, complete with 10-15 games. Put my dads ff1 in the nintendo, had a 23 knight, 21 master, 19 ninja, and a 15 white wizard. How do you get levels like this?? Anyways, i got a copy myself of ff1 from the Nintendo purchase. So, I made my own save. Tell me how this hits:

Fighter = Dad (for my dad)

Fighter = Dan (my name =P)

R. Mage = Zach (older brother)

B. Belt = Seth (younger brother)

This team took about 3 to 5 hours killing crap around the silver sword town to get 3 of those swords. All three became obsolete soon enough anyways. Then I got far enough and got bored. Put it down and picked it back up months later. I replaced the save with a team as such:

R. Mage = Zach (older brother)

B. Mage = Nate (youngest brother)

W. Mage = Mel (ex-girlfriend)

Thief = Seth (younger brother)

This team was really, really hard to kill stuff with, mainly because my black mage didnt live very long and thief didnt do much damage. Took me about an hour of dying reviving and other various crap before i restarted...again. New team:

Fighter = Dan (me)

B. Belt = Ken (best friend)

Red Mage = Zach (older brother)

W. Mage = Meli (ex-girlfriend)

This team took me almost to the tiger guy when you switch. I'm still working on this team =D Well anyways, theres my teams...

The levels are all exactly the same unless some characters are dead when the battles end. (If you do this enough, the levels will diverge.)

The team I'm playing with on PSP version, it ruuuules

Red Mage
Monk
Monk
Black Mage

INSANE- VERY low budget on weapons+armor, so more $$ on magic and items (ether!)

The red mage is suprisingly good as a fighter, leading the party, taking hits etc..

if you combine both red and black magic ON the monks, (haste+temper) it kills all.. I've defeated Tiamat in 2 rounds!!! lol

Posted by: Samurai Bob 20th July 2007 00:53
Red Mage
Monk
Thief
White Mage

I always found the other two classes useless. Warrior/Knight gets good armor, but later in the game he can get outdamaged by Ninjas and Masters. Black Mage/BW, despite being useful in the beginning, really sucks in the end. I mean, even a Flare spell can't compare to a Ninja/Master's regular attack.

Red Mage lags behind Monk and Thief for damage, but he can serve as a secondary healer, and is good for support spells too.

Of course, I can always kill off everyone except RM and solo him up until the Class Change to get the other guys to class change at Level 1. smile.gif

Fighter fighter black mage black mage.... Endgame with one knight using masamune, and the other using excailbur, if your BM's go first, and both fast/haste the knights first, you can kill Chaos in 2 hits... This can also be done by substituting one Knight for a Master.

If you're playing the original, then it's definitely a BAD idea to use two Masters instead of two Knights. EXTREMELY bad. You will be hard pressed to survive against Chaos.

If you're playing the GBA or PSP versions, then Masters, Ninjas, and Knights are much closer together in usefulness. The big problem with the Master is that it doesn't take hits nearly as well as the Knight, but its damage output is significantly higher.

Depends, IMHO. With two masters you have chances to kill Chaos in the first/second round if one of them crits. (And they crit often for me)

If your main killing force isa masters then you'll need to crush enemies fast, before they can attack you. It IS possible.

Actually I'm very dissapointed by the Ninja in the PSP version. Lowest HP of all "fighter" classes, and even lower than the white mage (although the problem is more that the HP of the white mage are too high). The Ninja does not hit harder than the Knight. (my knight as Excalibur and ninja masamune!!!).

so yeah, dissapointing

the cast of 8-bit Theatre, Black Mage/Wizard with Ultima Weapon (DoS), all characters w/ maxed out stats.

'Nuff said.

Posted by: Makoeyes21 10th October 2007 18:22
Well after pwning FF1 (DoS) with Knight, Ninja, White, and Black party (lvl 60ish) I decided to attempt it again but with a pure Knight party...

Well I finally beat Chaos with them. I had to level them to 99 and use ALOT of items.

Using Giants Gloves and Hermes Shoes I up'd my Knights attack power and hasted them over 4 rounds, while keeping 1 Knight per round free to use healing items (x-Pots, Elixers, and Megalixers)

Suprisingly enough, if you get lucky and Chaos doesn't use alot of aoe spells this fight is pretty easy. I managed to beat him in about 6 rounds, only using 1 x-pot, and 1 megalixer... I haven't fought through the Whisperwind bosses or attempted Omega, and Shinryu. I will let you know how those battles turn out.

EDIT: Omega and Shinryu are impossible with an all Knight party ;p

Going to try a 2 Master, 2 Red Wizard party. Should be ALOT easier than the 4 Knight party...

My first completion was with a Black Belt, Thief, White Mage, and Black Mage. It took over a year because I was only 3 (4 when I completed it) and wasn't much for strategy.

Later I did the RM/RM/WM/BM "Supermagic" party, and I got pretty far with 4 fighters but I couldn't get to the Undersea Shrine... I forget what kept killing me though.

I've tried a lot of other combinations but the only other one I actually beat the game with was Thief/Fighter/Black Mage/Red Mage (as silly as that order is, yes, that order - Nuklear Power, anyone?). That was on Dawn of Souls, though.

I also successfully did a Level 1 Class Change, by way of killing off my Fighter and White & Black Mages and advancing my Red Mage (same growth rates as Red Wizard, so no penalty for leveling him up a lot) enough to do the Ordeal. Biggest problem was definitely the Ice Cave. pinch.gif

I usually go Fighter, Monk, White Mage, and Black Mage. I've just never been fond of the Thief.

Posted by: Messier17 27th August 2009 15:23
I've only beat the game with Knight, Master, WM and BW. Which is the same part as yours. However recently I found Fighter, Thief, RM and BM to be really useful. Thief has enough attacking power to be slightly useful and running away in most dungeons is usually the best option. After the upgrade the thief kick so much arse that it's almost blinding. The black magic is eh but they can equip almost as much weapons and armor as the fighter and still have great evade and escaping skills.

Posted by: Perigryn 28th August 2009 00:24
My one run through (so far) was that party too. Next I wanna' give a go with an RM, Fighter, Thief and I'm not sure between WM or BM or another RM.

Posted by: Sandyboots 28th August 2009 01:21
I have only played the Advance version (once).

I know you didn't asked but I'm also telling you how I named my guys. Actually, I was lazy and went through the default names until I found something of my liking, except one.

Desh the fighter – Who doesn't use a fighter?. The name: From FFII, whoop-de for NPCs that have more personality than main characters.
Gerad the thief – Thieves suck, but ninjas are worth it. The name: I just HAD to.
Sosa the red mage – My favorite class, they might not shine at the end, but they are well rounded for the majority of the game. Besides the pimp hat is pimpin'. The name: If you read 8-bit theater you'll probably know why. Or maybe I should have gone with Deborah?
Elia the white mage – I always get paranoid if I don't have a reliable source (or two) of healing with me. The name: FFIII again, see Desh, also I like her theme tune.

I didn't use the monk because I don't like the pure brawl types. On the other side of the spectrum is the black mage, he/she got benched for the opposite reason. It's funny, black mages or elemental/natural mages are my favorite class in other kind of games.

Posted by: Toransu Kuja 28th August 2009 01:27
The exact same as Sandyboots. I could say some stuff, but he's stated all my opinions. the only differences are the name: I have Rob the fighter, Clive the thief, James the red mage and Jon the white mage.

My first party on the NES was Fighter, Fighter, White Mage, Black Mage, mostly because it was what I was told was the best party. I still think it is for the NES version.

On the GBA, I did a lot of experimenting. My favorite party ended up being Fighter, Red Mage, Thief, and Monk. I liked variety, and I liked bone-crushing normal attacks. Magic? That's for healing and making normal attacks all the more destructive.

Posted by: ILoveMoombas! 29th August 2009 21:21
My first party consited of a warrior, a monk, a white mage, and a black mage.

My party for my second run of the game(to complete the art gallery) had a warrior, a theif, a white mage, and a red mage. I don't like having multiples of the same class in my party.

SNES, PSX or GBA version? Cause the last one is pretty easy (in comparision to the others...:x)

I used a WM, RM (<- Has the important low level black magic like haste & steel + WM + decent attack power...so..it isnt that bad), Monk and thief. Though, in the next playthrough I would trade the thief for a other monk or knight. even ninja isnt THAT strong, IMHO a RM is better, not much less atk pwr (GBA version) + a whole bunch of nice spells whcih can be useful.

Fighter/Fighter/White Mage/Black Mage.

I wanted to try a Red Mage since I like them so much, but never got around to it. tongue.gif

Posted by: Donasin 18th March 2010 08:03
I have beaten the game with

Fighter; Blackmage; Whitemage; Redmage

I am currently trying

Fighter; Blackmage; Redmage; Thief

Am hoping to try

Fighter; Monk; Monk; Redmage

I'm doing four warriors, because I hate mages in this game. idk why

Posted by: Doughboyjones 27th March 2010 12:49
I usually go for Fighter, thief, wm, bm, but i'm now doing a 4 wm playthrough and it's making my brain hurt wacko.gif

I just started playing FF1 again. I was messing around looking for games for my phone to pass my time at work and I found FF1 being offered for my mobile for like $7! smile.gif It's like a cross between the PS1 and NES versions.

At the moment I have two games going. The first is:
Monk, Thief, B.Mage, W.Mage all lv. 20 (fun while using magic and seeing who is stronger between the BM and the Monk, but a little weak at the moment.)
and the other is:
Monk, Monk, Monk, W.Mage all lv.9 (hilariously fun and extremely cheap. At something like lv.5 the monks need no gear, or most of the gear makes them weaker. My WM is constantly saving the day too.) biggrin.gif

EDIT: I meant to say PS1 not PSP...

Posted by: seraphimdreamer777 17th April 2010 04:15
I have NES/PSX/PSP versions and always use the same classes and similar names.

Fighter NES Grey PSX/PSP Greyon
Black mage ALL Fade
White mage NES Mira PSX/PSP Mirara
Red mage ALL Yew

I've only recently got this game and I haven't played it too much but the class I stuck to was Thief, Monk, Black Mage, and White Mage. Just because it costs SO much to buy spells and Monks don't need anything and theives, well, they need barely anything whereas the BM and WM spells, they're just. Way too costly, though at least it gives me an excuse to level my characters up in the gil-gathering.

Posted by: FallingHeart 17th April 2010 08:36
I've played through it once, my setup was:

Fighter
Monk
Black Mage
White Mage

It worked pretty well

Posted by: Magitek_slayer 24th April 2010 17:45
I always pick:

Fighter
Monk
white mage
Black mage

OR:

Fighter
Thief
Black mage
White mage

I once chose:2 red mages and 2 thieves and had trouble beating the game.

I didn't like the red mages that much.

The actuall hitting of the red mages was better actually than that of the thieves.

with red mages you can equip good swords and slash away at enemies, with thieves you are stuck with mediocre daggers with low damage.

I just did a run with
Fighter - AAAA
Fighter - BBBB
Redmage -CCCC
Whitemage -DDDD
(NES emulator with savestate, increased speed, and walkthroughs make the game sooo much more enjoyable but looks like I might need to check out some of the updated versions. Read some of the first replies and realized people weren't on crack "WTF there is no Monk in FFI?!", they were playing a different version. )

Beat the game at levels 25, 25, 25, 24. Anyone around here keep track of such things and/or wanna compete for lowest level to beat it? What's the lowest level you've beaten FFI with? I felt like I could have shaved at least a few levels. Maybe skip the castle of ordeals (that is possible isn't it?) but not sure what I would do without the heal staff. Heal staff, heal helmet, heal helmet, figher kills everything and battle ends with everyone at full life again was one of my main strategies for getting through dungeons.

Posted by: thebartzman 19th May 2010 03:42
Fighter
Theif
Red Mage
White Mage
Killed the game in two days
biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gigantuar 19th May 2010 06:25
I've only seriously played Dawn of Souls but there I went with Black Mage/White Mage/Red Mage/Thief all named after my friends (with the Black Mage being me, hehe). Very expensive though, with all those mages, but still very effective team.

Posted by: PendragonKuro 13th June 2010 01:04
Warrior

Thief

Red Mage (Me)

White Mage

Solid party given the limited job class choices. happy.gif

Posted by: thebartzman 13th June 2010 06:00
Started over using two fighters and two white mages

Posted by: InsaneVisionary 15th July 2010 20:38
I use Theif
Fighter
Black Mage and
White mage
However these posts about the other parties some ppl had has inspired me to replay the game a bunch of times with different combinations.
thnx biggrin.gif

Posted by: vividesu 23rd July 2010 15:13
These are before class upgrade of course.
My most recent game was FIGHTER, THIEF, BL MAGE, WH MAGE.
And before that though the THIEF was replaced by a RD MAGE.

Posted by: madmangunner 26th July 2010 19:03
on my last playthrough i choose four white mages lets just say your in for hundreds of hour of leveling just to survive. Its not all bad though think of it this way you have 4 healers lol. ahh the fun of making a ff game into a real challange.

Just recently replayed this and am almost done.
My party is the usual:
Fighter - Auron
Theif - Zidane
W Mage - Aerith
B Mage - Vivi

I'm playing it on a GameBoy Advance emulator and I have to say I don't like this version using the easy setting for EXP, GIL and price of items. I think I may replay it on my PSX.

Posted by: Psiren 13th August 2010 18:38
My standard party is:

Fighter/Knight - Biggs
Thief/Ninja - Wedge
Red Mage/Red Wizard - Kefka
White Mage/White Wizard - Vivian

I tried playing with the default party once, but on my second time around, I found I liked the Red Mage better than the Black Mage. Once you get the Lightbringer sword (in Dawn of Souls & PSP, anyway), you can even cast Holy, so not being able to buy the highest level magic isn't that much of an issue for me.

Posted by: Insegredious 9th November 2010 16:50
In my most current playthough, I'm using:

Black Belt - Kimo
White Mage - Tina
Red Mage - Lucy
Black Mage - Bessie

In my very first playthrough, I used Thief, Black Belt, Red Mage, Black Mage, all named after myself and my friends.

Posted by: Cefca 9th November 2010 23:20
My usual party is a balanced one:

Fighter
Thief
Black Mage
White Mage

I sometimes mix it up a bit though, swapping the Thief for a Blackbelt and/or the White Mage for a Red Mage for more power but still being able to heal efficiently.

I usually give my characters FF names too like you lot. Usually the obvious ones (Squall for Fighter, Locke or Zidane for Thief, Vivi for Black Mage, Garnet or Rosa for White Mage, etc).

Posted by: Aeris-Logan 10th November 2010 01:10
I have never been much of a "magic user" in console RPGs. I prefer to straight up fight (even with casters). I have run through FF1 a number of times but my favorite party line up is 2 warriors 2 white mages. There really doesnt seem to be a shortage of weapons in the game and I hook up the mages with the Masamune and (I think) its Thor's hammer.

Posted by: Electivirus 13th November 2010 15:32
I've always gone with the standard Warrior/White Mage/Black Mage/Thief.

What can I say? I like playing it safe. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Insegredious 14th November 2010 19:26
I just started a new game with...four Red Mages (Joshua, Elmire, Henrik, Dorine). Can't get much more balanced than that, can you?

Posted by: Kittymew 15th December 2010 23:35
FF1 was my first FF and one that has a LOT of nostalgia effect on me.

First party:

Fighter - Link
Black Belt - Aron
White Mage - Mira
Black Mage - Lina

Favourite Party: Fighter, *, Red Mage, White Mage; gives you three beefies to block for the white and good damage output. * should be a Thief, Black Belt, or second Fighter. Thief is best for speed running (put him up front for flee), Black Belt/Fighter is a matter of taste, but Fighter generally ends up better.

Just for shiggles, I started a new game with the following party:

Knight - Scott
White Mage - Ramona
Black Mage - Kim
Thief - Knives

Anyone who gets the reference (I have a hunch that R51 will) gets one internet.

Long time since I played FFI, but I believe it was...

Red Mage
Thief
White Mage
Fighter

1st and fav from NES days: Fighter, Black Belt, White Mage, Black Mage

Others I've beaten the game with on various versions:

Fi, Th, Wm, Bm (who hasn't, right?)
Fi, Th, Bb, Rm
Fi, Fi, Bb, Rm
Fi, Fi, Fi, Rm (SUPER easy and SUPER expensive)
Fi, Fi, Fi, Fi (not as good as ^^^)
Fi, Th, Th, Rm
Fi, Fi, Wm, Bm
Fi, Bb, Bb, Rm
Fi, Rm, Wm, Bm
Bb, Bb, Bb, Bb
Wm, Bm, Bm, Bm (fairly difficult at first, also the MOST expensive)

I think I also started an 8-bit Theater party but I haven't finished with them yet. I'd also like to try with the "true" light warriors from 8-bit Theater sometime.

Posted by: Iscariot 15th April 2011 23:29
Hmmm... I'm noticing a pattern with everyone. I guess I am kinda unique in that my first (and favorite) set up has always been:

Sain - Black Belt -> Master (weak at first but becomes really powerful late game)
Zebb - Thief -> Ninja (high evade and a higher escape chance, also able to use low level black magic)
Fynn - Red Mage -> Red Wizard (high armor and damage in early game, good for buffs and debuffs in late game, plus some singular healing)
Sara - White Mage -> White Wizard (group healing and strong magic against undead. I also thought white mage was a girl)

I know that I am weird in that I didn't use the fighter or black mage, but I always found black mages to die too quickly and fighters were never good enough for me to NEED them. They can be useful for some healing then they become knights, but I enjoyed having a red mage more.

Posted by: jtdurai 24th April 2011 22:59
I did Fighter Fighter WhiteMage BlackMage at first, back when I was a kid. I later switched one fighter for a black belt. I've also done:

-4 Fighters.
-1 solo Black Belt (3 dead Thieves). It sounds tough, but it gets pretty easy around 2 orbs in. Unarmed black belts get stupid powerful in the NES version. I don't know if that has been mentioned.
-4 Black mages. I don't even remember if I made it to Garland before changing my mind.

I'm not actually sure if I've ever done the classic line up. As far names, I don't remember, but I can tell you they weren't Squall or Sabin or anything with more than 4 letters. tongue.gif

From top to bottom:

Monk
Thief
Red Mage
White Mage

Posted by: Waflix 21st July 2011 13:05
Warrior (Desh)
Black Mage (Gilles)
White Mage (Elia)
Red Mage (Elayne)

^ I've always used this formation, in every Final Fantasy game where you can change jobs.

My Classes were
Warrior:Kasper
Thief:Colin
White Mage:JD(Didnt know White mage was a Chick until it became a White Wizard in the new one for the PSP)
Black Mage:Anine

Posted by: Chell172 31st July 2011 18:56
I did this.

FIRST TIME:

Warrior: Cloud
Thief: Yuffie
White Mage: Aeris
Black Mage: Vivi

SECOND TIME:

Warrior: Ryan
Thief: Aaron
White Mage: Kelly
Black Mage: Kaleb

I was playing FFVII when I did number one.

Posted by: RavenLalonde 24th July 2013 23:07
Probably the easiest is the one I am using currently:
Fighter "John"
Black Mage "Rose"
Black Belt "Dave"
White Mage "Jade"

Another one I have used (and liked):
Fighter "Jane"
Thief "Roxy"
Black Belt "Dirk"
Red Mage "Jake"

Probably my favorite is Fi, Th, BM, WM; if you are willing to put up with a useless thief until you can change classes. Another good one is Red Mage, Black Mage, White Mage, and then either a Fighter or a Thief; if you like magic. The hardest party is 4WM. If you can beat the game with that, you are a Final Fantasy master.

Quote
The Thief is just a less powerful version of the Fighter who can't use as many weapons as the Fighter, so I never liked him.

If you fight Bahamut, you can change classes, upgrading your thief into a ninja. Ninjas can use nearly every weapon, and can use some black magic as well. In short, they are as awesome as ninjas should be.

Posted by: Spoonylife 13th January 2014 23:09
Kabuto - Knight
Baku- Theif
Noctis - Black mage
Anri - White mage

Posted by: chevleclair 14th January 2014 23:43
First time I played was in 1990. The original Final Fantasy was a cold, very unforgiving game. I accidentally picked this lineup and it wound up serving me well.

Warrior: John
Warrior: Joe
Black Mage: Jake
White Mage: Josh

I was obsessed with the letter J apparently.

Posted by: grimlock1972 27th April 2017 23:18
my first play through was a Fighter,Fighter,White mage , Black mage.

my preferred squad is fighter plus all three mages. or else Fighter,Monk/Black Belt, white and black mages.

Posted by: TheEvilEye 28th April 2017 12:50
I'm playing through this again, though very slowly. My current team is a Fighter, Monk, Red Mage & White Mage. This is my first time without using a Black Mage, and so far I'm not really missing him.

I really should try this game without a Fighter in my party, though. He does make things much easier.

Posted by: Nosferatu 29th April 2017 03:00
My first play when it first came out on NES was Fighter,Thief,Monk, and White Mage. I have played many times thru and enjoyed them all. I did find another that I liked playing and it is 4 White Mages. If you want a challenge that is the way to get it.
