Hey, sorry if this is bad (I'm going to mention Emulators and ROMS) or been said before, but I recently discovered the world of game hacking.

It started with Pokemon hacks. Yes, I love Pokemon. And some of the hacks are fantastic.

If you don't know what a hack is, basically, people hack a game (older games, newer systems have become harder to hack/emulate) and re-write its data to make either their very own games out of them or add/change stuff.

I recently discovered there are quite a few FFT hacks out there. One that even changes the PSX version into the PSP version. This obviously requires Emulation, and a patching program to change the ISO file of the original game (which you can do LEGALLY if you own the game and rip it to your puter).

The main on that interests me is called the Insane Difficulty patch. I think its currently at version 1.3 and it adds a "balance" to the game, as well as new enemies, encounters, etc...

There is actually a website called insane difficulty that has patches/mods for quite a lot of FF games as well as Breath of Fire and Mega Man X and several other games.

I'd post links but don't want to bend/break any rules until I get the OK.

I guess what I'm wondering is if anyone has come across any of these or any hacks in general to make games less vanilla or more interesting after several playthroughs?

EDIT: I also found out there is a Chrono Trigger patch as well!

I'm not looking for it, no. I was wondering if anyone has played one and what their opinion of it was. I recently started FFT insane difficulty and was just curious to exchange opinions or experiences.

I'd never heard of that patch that changes the PSX version fully to the PSP version. That's pretty interesting - I wonder if it adds the cutscenes as well?

It's been a long time since anyone asked the question about what's allowed to be posted here. I believe our longstanding answer is that patches are fine, because patches don't constitute any sort of intellectual property infringement on their own. You just can't link to the source games or console BIOSes or anything that is copyrighted and commercially distributed code.

Hey, cool I'll post some links then.

To answer your question, from what I have gathered, the PSP to PSX version does not add the cutscenes. It just seems to add the script from the PSP version, as well as some missing stuff from the Japanese version and the story books that were removed from the PSX and PSP versions. I haven't tried it out yet, I just started the Insane Difficulty version and already got my ass handed to me on the first battle on Mandalia Plains, lol. There is now a Tonberry on the map that fecks your shite up.

FFT Hacktics (a bunch of FFT hacks including the PSP to PSX version): http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?board=53.0

I'm going to try out some more of them once I get some spare time but as I have played through the original game quite a few times and never got a chance to play the WoTL (PSP) version, I'm definately happy about finding these.

Let's discuss our experiences here.

I don't mean to double post but eh, I'm updating my progress on the Insane Difficulty version as I go and wasn't sure if a simple edit would show up as a new post.

Anyway, I've gotten to Dorter, just after Sweegy Woods and my god, they aren't kidding around when they say Insane Difficulty. And it isn't even the story battles that are the issue.

Although, I did have trouble with Mandalia Plains, when you have to rescue Algus, it was the ensuing random battles that handed me my own ass.

If travelling from the south up through Mandalia Plains, you regularly encounter the same group of enemies: 2 Thieves, 2 Bombs, 2 Red Goblins and a Tonberry. Normally, this wouldn't be too much of an issue. However, the Thieves can both use Hi-Potions, Phoenix Downs, Throw Gil, Steal Heart and have HP 70+. On top of that, Goblin spin punch now has a much larger area of effect, hitting not just adjacent tiles, but 2 tiles away in either direction. Meaning, it can hit not just whomever is next to them, but characters behind characters, both friendly and enemy. They also have a new attack that has a range of 3 called Triple Hit, that is exactly how it sounds. It is a powerful attack that hits any 1 character 3 times.

On top of this, Bombs are more powerful as well, having a physical attack with a range of 3 that soaks a character in Oil as well as damaging them. It then has a Throw Fire attack with the same range as well as its explode tech. However, they also have Critical Quick when their HP drops to critical, giving them an immediate CT of 100, allowing them to use their Explosion as soon as they drop to critical HP.

Tonberry is Tonberry. They can't move very far, but they can use Chef's Knife and Everyone's Grudge to inflict high damage and slow/poison respectively.

I cannot win this battle yet.

Traveling south through Mandalia Plains is a little better, you encounter a group of Squires with 1 Chemist, very easily won.

Sweegy Woods, I have only encountered 1 Mediator going East so far, but the story battle consiting of a couple of Bombs and Red/Black Goblins was pretty difficult with their new Techs and higher attack powers as well as higher base HP.

I so far have unlocked in addition to Squires and Chemists, Knights, Marksmen (Archers), Priests and Wizards. Aside from Chemists, all jobs have new Abilities/Spells. For instance, Knights' break HP/MP/Speed/etc.. Techniques now hit more like Holy Knight/Dark Knight abilities, with a range and higher hit rate. Priests now have an early Holy Element spell and Wizard spells are an entirely new set.

I'll try to jot them down an add them in here at some point, but the Insane Difficulty version have been very challenging and I am only 2 hours into the game.

I wanted to mention in closing that there is an Insane Difficulty easy version, that tones the Mod down supposedly, while keeping all the new techs and what-not but where's the fun in that?

More later.

EDIT: I can't even begin to get past Dorter. I'm going to try the FFT+ and FFT Complete (PSP WoTL to PSX patch) and see how those go. Insane Difficulty = INFURIATING DIFFICULTY.
