What is your best achievemnet in FF9.

Has anybody got the Excalibur II for Steiner? If you have then all my respects to you. I ask this question because this has got to be the ultimate challenge on FF9.

Posted by: ultimage 27th June 2006 17:03
I don't think I ever have... nope. I did find the secret synth shop near the end without looking it up though. I'm rather proud of that.

Umm not just that, but also Ozma. I never beat him =(

No, I never got the Excalibur II. And besides, FFIX is pretty easy especially because of Trance. Zidane is teh winna mon.

My best achievement was getting all the Chocograph treasures and unlocking all secret holes.

l'd still say that getting Excalibur II is a tad harder than beating Ozma. Ozma is really easy with the right stradgety.

I didn't get to disc 4 but i know that you have to beat the game in under 20 hours or something.

Close, you have to reach Memoria in under 12 hours.

I'll admit that I'm certainly not an expert in FFIX. I made it to Memoria in about 13 hours, so I'm sure that if I really wanted to I could eventually shave that excess time off, but I've never really gotten into FFIX

Posted by: Cloud_Strife510 27th June 2006 19:52
I've never gotten Excalibur2, but I have beaten Ozma, fully completed chocobo hot and cold, done everything in daguerro, got to hear multi-arms name
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Gilgamesh
, and that's all I can think of right now.

Yes, but there are some who don't know to look.

You have to defeat Lich and look at the first on the right pillar in under 12 hours to be precise. I've done (what I know of and I know quite a lot) everything on FF9 apart from the Excalibur II sidequest cause I just can't bring myself to do it.
Come on is there anyone who's done it!

Posted by: Crazyswordsman 28th June 2006 23:19
Ozma actually requires some luck. I had four Level 99 characters get killed easily by it. Flare Star and Meteor are doozies. -CSM

Excalibur II is the only thing I didn't get. And the idea of it kinda' annoys me, I mean, it's REALLY not something anyone would get without a guide to know it's there. I prefer games to have things you can find on your own without a guide. =/

Posted by: Nytecrawla 29th June 2006 12:04
Ya know what....now I gotta dust off my copy of 9 and try to get it, because I am annoyed at not having done it. I mean, I got the Zeus Hammer and smacked Ozma...now I gotta get excalibur 2....arghhh!!

Posted by: Zeromus_X 29th June 2006 12:21
Doing the tedious Chocobo-treasure minigame is harder than fighting the multicoloured bastard...and a good tip: input your commands while his animations are still going. That way he doesn't get a free turn. (He automatically does a move when you input a command.)

I can't imagine ever getting Excalibur II.

Posted by: Nytecrawla 29th June 2006 12:23
True..the chocobo game nearly had me destroying my PS!

I also thought the cards were a bit trying at times.

Posted by: Shotgunnova 29th June 2006 15:21
The Excalibur II quest is about the only thing I haven't done, really, and I'm too much of a wuss to devote countless resets and retries since my last playthrough was bullet-in-the-head meticulous. I guess I could lay claim to having witnessed 98% of the dialogue first-hand, but that's nothing special.

Posted by: Moglv99 29th June 2006 21:28
My best achievement? I finished the game with the Atlethe Queen and 1789 Jumps in the Jump Rope minigame. I don't know about the Excalibur II, I always knew that you got to be in Memoria in less than 12 hours, but its really worth it? Far I know only Steiner can equip it ( and if you don't like Steiner, why bother?), plus you could simply get it with a gameshark code..
Edit
Oh...and I was mastering all my 100 cards, I got around 1620 points but then I accidentally erased my record. sad.gif

Getting the sword is actually very easy. Play the game through at your own pace, then once you reach the correct place, leave the game on until 100 hours. This resets the timer allowing you to get the sword. Simple. However, it still does not make the game any more fun...

Has that been verified anywhere? It seems like a rookie glitch if they actually allowed that.

I've heard the timer does reset. However, that said, it doesn't reset after 100 hours, but more like 2 years.

Posted by: Zeromus_X 30th June 2006 16:52
Yeah, something like that, if at all. For most people that don't wish to fry their PS, you're going to have to work for the Excalibur II.

Which besides the note from Gilgamesh, what's so special about it? Getting past Lich in 12 hours...jeez.

Posted by: dont chocobos rule? 30th June 2006 18:36
you realize quina can actually EAT Lich right?

I'm tempted to say it doesn't work because it ruins the best and hardest secret in any FF game. Sorry guys.

I got Excalibur and then i beat the last boss(i think his name is katja but it was a long time so i cant remembe) with just steiner. FFIX was pretty easy once i got Steiner to lv 85 with excalibur.

The last boss is Necron.

I can't bring myself to play for only 12 hours just to get a real powerful sword. I loved the Chocobo mini-game but it is a pain to master it and you need to in order to get Zidane's Ultima Weapon and Steiner's Ragnarok with Shock. I've never gotten far enough in the Chocobo quest to fight Ozma.

No, that's been proven false by a number of people. The timer does reset, but the Excalibur II has gone.

For me, beating Ozma, but in regards to getting the sword in under 12 hours, use the FMV skip by opening the disc cover and closing it, works for every one, and helps with time as well.

Not to mention it doesn't make sense from a programming point of view. This isn't an overflow. Timing glitches occur because you end up flipping the bits because someone was fool enough to use a byte when a word was needed.

That is to say that 100 hours isn't a power of 2 using any sort of well-known atomic as your time representation. It's also unlikely that the game itself would 'reset' the clock variable directly, but just roll over the display.

You'd be better off trying 2^32 seconds to see if an overflow occurs. I estimate that to be 130+ years.

Three of my greatest achievements in FF9:

1. Beting Ozma... but not just BEATING him, beating him. Beating him in Aloha Gear (which means all defense stats are at a big, fat ZERO).

2. Excalibur II. No, as a weapon it's really not worth it for the stats, it's just a nice achievement. I did it for the challenge. I might attempt to try an "Excalibur II perfect game" sometime, but that's even harder.

3. All 100 Quadmist/Tetra-master cards. XD

Right now I'm trying the most masochistic challenge I've tried to date. A Level 1 challenge (which is getting 4 players to beat Necron at level 1). It's possible, just very time-consuming. Even a boss as easy as Sealion was a huge pain in the neck. It's really slow going so far... tongue.gif

Wow a true Final Fantasy 9 Pro. thumbup.gif

I'm trying to bust the game on the first disc. As of now, this is what I have when I shouldn't:

1) Level 50+ characters, Freya is the highest at 58.
2) Robe of Lords AND Protect Ring from Chocobo Hot & Cold

I'm working on maxing out Frog Drop. Already I caught 38 frogs, and will catch more after this post. The frogs respawn on pure time, not gameplay. With only 1 marsh, it takes about 6 hours to respawn adult frogs from 3 frogs.

My game clock is over 80 hours in disc 1 still. Basically anything only obtainable on disc 1 I already have. This includes earning 100 approval in the sword duel near the beginning of the game.

Perhaps my toughest accomplishment that required actual skill was defeating Quale after the Desert Palace and before entering Esto Gaza. With low Magic Defense and levels in the high 20s and low 30s, a MT Water could easily kill my team at max HP. Making things trickier was the absence of a White magic user. Lots of Mighty Guard and White Draw as well as Diamond Gloves on Freya helped pull through (as well as Auto-Potion). Stole everything as well.

I've also bested Ozma with a team at levels 47, 45, 44, 44. Since Ozma is so luck based I'm not sure this qualifies, esppecially when one knows how to influence Ozma's AI. I've also taken out Tantuarian in a battle where it hit one person with Doom and that was the only successful attack it used in the entire battle. It's simple enough to replicate the setup and strategy though.

Comments on the timer overflow issue:
Short answer: 828 days and change
Longer explanation: I lack the tools and know-how to verify this myself but from what I've heard, the location which tracks the game timer increments 60 times a second. It's either an 8 digit hexedecimal or a 32 digit binary number; the overflow point of either is the same. Coincedentally, the refresh rate of a TV in Japan or North America is 60 times per second.

Therefore, when the game clock reaches 100 hours, it has about 2 years and 94 days to go before Excalibur II is available in Memoria.
