Yeah, I suppose everyone knows by know that the baseball players plan to strike on August 30... Well, I for one say screw America's "favorite" pasttime. I think I'll stick to watching football... and women's volleyball. <g>

i, for one, like baseball and i like watching baseball. i understand why some people dont' like it and i understand why some people like it but can't sit through a 9 inning game. it actually takes a lot of patience to watch baseball. Unlike football, basketball, or hockey which have super-exciting plays which can happen every couple minutes, an exciting moment might not happen for a couple of innings. [If you're looking for a way to become more patient, try watching an entire baseball game without leaving or falling asleep ] But there are plenty of things to be seen. One pitcher can dominate through 8 innings of the team with a 3-0 lead but can lose it in the 9th by giving up a Grand Slam. Or you hope that a pitcher can retire 27 batters without giving up a hit. Those are the kind of moments you watch baseball for.
On to the strike. Of all the people that I know and people that I have heard, they say if baseball goes on strike, they'll be through with the game. I'm sure this even applies for some of us at CoN. Me? I won't be done with baseball. I like the sport too much to just stop. I'll be extremely pissed off, though. Who wouldn't be? You have these guys that just go out there and make a kajillion dollars just for swinging a stick or throwing a ball. For one, these jobs are not important. Believe it or not, we could live without professional sports. I remember I did this report this past year in English class, this was my topic: sports figures and their salary. Among the things I said, "Nobody... and I mean nobody... should be aloud to make more money than that of the most important man in the country: the president." [I mean that as a general position, not just George or Bill ] the simple fact is that we know baseball players earn too much. and yet they are still fighting the system to get more or pay less. They are trying to keep themselves from being the victims of losing a thousand bucks or something. [spare change] But they don't realize who the real victims are: the fans. The fans are the true baseball lovers, IMO... not the greedy players themselves. And if the game of baseball loses all of these fans, i feel that the entire organization will fold. sorry about the rant . but i leave you with this thought: When did the game of baseball stop being a game and started becoming a business? -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |

I watch baseball once in awhile, when the Cardinals are on. That is quite rare, considering I'm in Braves country. I really don't like just sitting and watching it though...I'm not a sports fan. I agree that the players make too much, I mean, it's just a game! They don't do anything important!

I watch baseball fairly often, but not enough to actually follow the teams alot... after all, since the Yanks just buy the best team and dominate every year, it's kinda pointless to follow the standings.
firesoulbird: Unfortunately, it's not "just a game". It's a business. The fact of the matter is, the players don't necessarily deserve half the money they get paid, it's that they know they can make MORE. Once you start shelling out millions to make a ball team, so that you can fill stands and MAKE millions (hopefully more than you paid, anyone remember the Marlins a few years back?) it becomes a business. Also, I'd like to take this time to point out to Sylphid that his woman of the moment, Avril Lavigne, lived in Napanee Ontario before she went and got all famous. Point being that Napanee is 20 minutes away from where I live, in Kingston. Not really any point to this, never met her or anything, but everyone around here makes a big who-ah about it so I thought I'd point it out -------------------- I close my mouth now and I scream, Open the door, there's nothing worth redeeming I saw your face before in rough, You should wait around a while, your body's bound to turn up. Yeah, I know. It is just crazy the prices people will pay for things, and the fact that the players are paid so much. Its the same for all sports though; the university I'm attending's football team is considered by the people here the best thing since sliced bread. The coach continues to be paid horribly large amounts of money, and the college seems to not understand where the money goes, and so tuition is raised yet again. If I had my way, there would not be such an emphasis on sports in schools. -------------------- "So in the end I will be-what I will be No loyal friend Was ever there for me" -Gollum's Song, Emiliana Torrini |

Except that's where schools get their notoriety: sports. "Sure, you might have the top ten smartest students in the world, but our football team kicked your ASS!" Why do you think some students coast through college/university on sports scholarships, while the really SMART people still have to scrape to save enough money to cover all their fees? (Not to say the people on sports scholarships can't be really smart, but you know what I mean.) It's the age we live in: the almighty dollar rules all, and most of it goes to those who keep the masses entertained.
Case in point: sports players, pop/rock stars, actors/actresses. What do these three have in common? They all keep us entertained, make big money for someone, and in turn, make BIG money themselves. -------------------- I close my mouth now and I scream, Open the door, there's nothing worth redeeming I saw your face before in rough, You should wait around a while, your body's bound to turn up. I don't mind anyone making ungodly amounts of money, what I do mind is people distrupting the lives of others and useing that as a bargining chit. Baseball's not so bad, since it sucks anyway, but just imagion trash collectors, police, airline pilots, or anyone else with important jobs doing this.
Of course if the cops did go on strike... -------------------- "Number One, I order you to go take a number two." |

Rubbish collectors, police, airline pilots. All do jobs that are in some way or another stressful, and very tough, as well as important. What do they get paid in relation to a sports star? Nothing, practically.
These are people who have the RIGHT to strike, because they get shafted by the upside-down way society values professions. Baseball players are basically getting something for nothing (and don't give me any boo-hoo, they have to train hard etc crap), and it's people like this going on strike that makes the whole labour movement look stupid. I could go on for days about how totally crap society is, but this isn't the topic for it, and you just know I'll get heated enough that it'd have to be closed. |

Both sides are greedy. The players said they were gonna strike, but offered a fairly flexible deal as a last resort to the gm's and owners, but the gm's and owners just shut them down. Now that the talk started, they want to be stubborn too. I'm definitely gonna be pissed, but if the Cubs still have Sammy(that's a pretty big if), then I'll probably go back to watching baseball.

I don't care much about baseball anymore, so whatever. I'd like to see them strike and see the whole league collapse for no apparent reason.

baseball isn't my favorite sport. but still, i have one of my two teams about to win the wildcard {Oakland A's, suckas } But all this talk about the strike and taxes, it's all bullshit.
::ahem:: my impersination of a baseball player <BP> I am letting down all of my fans across the country, taking away a game that is known as the American Pasttime, and making a huge ass of myself by looking greedy. But who cares? I have my zillion dollar contract! that sums it up for me -------------------- Air force... if you ever join the militant wing, join the Air force Army = jockos Navy = seasick nerds Marines = show offs PeaceCorp = hippies AF is the way to go |

Don't have time yet to reply to all other issues, but I will be disgusted if baseball goes on strike. As long as the Cubbies exist though, I will be a Cubs fan. I don't have a choice, it's in my blood. Even if they suck (like this year.)
