Pop quiz hotshot:

Your an aspiring artist with a massive inferiority complex whose tired of having to pander to others in order to get your desperately inept art onto your local video-game oriented website.  So, realizing that only a website stands between you and annoying the hell outta said local webmaster (oh the fun I can have with that...but that's for another topic...), you decide to create your own webpage.

What do you do...what do you do...

...no really, I wanna know what the hell to do!  I don't even know where to begin...  I have heard that it's possible to get free webspace...but even then, I don't even know how one goes about it...do you need to know complex code?

Your looking at the village internet idiot here so...uh...better talk laymans if ya can...  Oh yeah, I wanted to put this in the website oriented forums 'fore I realized it wasn't there no more...is this the next best thing?

I personally use Tripod to make my site, and it's free with 50 MB of space or so.  I use code for mine, since I know some of it, but they have a site builder where you can pick backgrounds and things and put them right where you want by dragging your mouse.  If that makes any sense.  At any rate, it doesn't use code, but I don't know if it's any good because my computer is too slow to use it properly.  Tripod also has a link to a site called Webmonkey that can teach you some simple code.  That's where I learned it.  You could also try Geocities or Angelfire, but I can't tell you about them because I've never tried 'em.  Good luck!

Shop (well, figuratively) around for a free host, and see if you can find one that allows hotlinking.  AFAIK, none of Tripod, Angelfire, Geocities or Fortunecity allow this, which makes it a real pain posting up pictures.  See the request thread for some examples.

If you only want to put up fics and pics and link them from elsewhere, you really don't need to know anything - just how to put them on the server, then link to them (though, again, linking to images this way won't be allowed on some servers).  Making an actual page is a little more complex, but not hugely so - and as Aristh said, there are tools available online to help.

I'd love to recommend you a free host, but I just don't know any good ones any more.  Hopefully someone else can help - or else, there's the good old-fashioned websearch.  ':E'

Tripod bites and then some. That's where my site was, and they took away half of my space, so I had to delete most of it. -.-

Liquid2k.com, last I checked, allowed hotlinking. I don't think they have any site-building tools, but with hotlinking, you wouldn't necessarily need them right away anyway.

I personally couldn't figure Tripod out because they limit where you can put things. I used liquid2k once before and I hated it, I can't remember why. But the one I have below is basically the best that I have come across.

http://www.freewebsites.com

50mb of web space!

Unlimited E-mail adressess!

FTP access for uploading

No file size limits!

Free ready to use CGI's

Server Side Include support

Web Based File Manager

Unlimited hits and bandwidth!

Hosting on secure high end unix servers!
Choice of advertising (including BANNERLESS!)
Unlimited aliases for your site!
ie. http://(anythignyoulike).yourname.freewebsites.com/
or http://anything.yourdomain.com/ for domains!

Enjoy.

Once you do find out though, NP, it's not hard to set some up. You don't need complex tables for now, unless you want to spend a good chunk of your time running to the local webmasters begging for help. Try looking at the source code in simple pages (View -> Source) to see what they typed in the code. Pictures are fairly simple if you just want them on a page. Usually, if you just have a page with thumbnails that link, when clicked, to the normal sized picture, then that's all you really need :-) Go find a site that will host you first though, then grab the nearest online person with webmastering experience if you need help.

Tripod's that bad, eh?  I've never had problems with it, at least with the freeform editor.  But then, like Tiddles has said, if we all agreed the world would be pretty boring.   ':)'

Angelfire used to be okay as a free host, with 50MB of space and an option of pop-up ads or banner ads (which I used).  However, they've taken away 30MB of my 50 and slapped pop-ups on, so I really can't recommend them anymore.  Still, if you don't mind ads, it's reliable and very easy to use - they also have tutorials on basic HTML, pre-made webpage templates, and a nice guestbook.

Day Dream Graphics (http://www.daydreamgrapics.com) offers free anime-based web designs, with instructions on how to use them.

Windy's Design Studio (http://www.windyweb.com) also offers free web layouts and wallpapers, non-anime-based.

If you want to buy your own domain, there are a few places which seem reliable...can't remember the addresses but I'll look for them again.  I think their rates are about $7.00 a month.

Also, pick up "HTML for Dummies".  It's very comprehensive and lets you make pretty, pretty pages...there's another book which goes into more detail.  I think it's called "Everything You Need to Know about HTML", but I'll check again.

My Website experiences have been living hell.  First I used Homestead because I liked drag/drop and I was a lazy bum without the drive to learn HTML.  Then Geocities, for the same reason.  I finally learned HTML for the heck of it and used Tripod for a few sites up until now where I hate Tripod because the site always crashes and I can't update for crap.  Not much to update though, considering there isn't really anything on the site and I have a current lack of ideas.  I'm gonna try freewebsites because I like the free part.

My advice? Just don't touch Tripod because it bites.

Heh, I used Homestead, too, for my second manifestation of a site. But that was 3 or 4 years ago... Then I wrote out my first site on Homestead, I had no advertising cause my frames messed their banners up, mwahaha. But then they had to go start charging money, so I just browsed around. Eh, oh well.
