Complete Collection - Monster-in-box Glitch?

I've been working on the CC version. I'm at the part where Yang rejoins your crew and you infiltrate Baron via the old waterway under the city. So I'm running around collecting treasures and find a monster-in-box treasure in the non-visible passages. I open it up and encounter 4 imp creatures titled "grudge puppet" and "death puppet."

I've played through the orginal and beaten it with flying colors (meaning I spent a lot of time searching for all treasures) but I don't remember finding this chest in the original. I think it's a glitch but am unsure if this chest and/or glitch appeared in the original. Or if it pertains only to the CC. Anyways my meter never fills up, I can't attack, they can't attack, but I can try running away. However when I try to run away it says "can't run away."

Just wanted to see if any of you know about this, whether it's a glitch, etc.

Have you tried using an Emergency Exit to escape? I seem to remember there being a Death Puppet enemy in the Lunar ruins. It was a palette swap of Calcabrina. Grudge puppet took 3-4 attacks to kill with level 80+ characters and Death Puppet took like 10 doing around ~6500 each time.

No idea. I'm playing through this game too and I didn't find that chest (glad I didn't), so I'm not sure. All I can say is restart and don't get the chest this time.

I was thinking the same, but the attack/item menu never shows since the attack meters never fill. I'm just glad I saved the game frequently.

So heres the location of the chest.... its in b3 of the old waterway. There's a large circular room with water. In the center of the room is an island with a treasure chest on it. If you walk to the bottom of that circular room and take the non-visible passage all the way down, press X while facing down. I think it may be to the left one step and the chest can be opened while facing down (keep in mind this chest is not visible since its in the non-visible passage).

[EDIT]Actually, sometimes after restarting I couldn't get the chest to open up.

Just for kicks I restarted several times to test the contents of the chest, and it appears this is a palette swap...

The monsters are clearly four goblins despite their names being death and grudge puppets. Actually several times I opened the chest there were other monster names for those four goblins.

Every time I run into the death and grudge puppets the attack meter never fills. I can attack some times when I run into the other named goblins. In those cases I always get an item drop with no visible item. So the game thinks theres an item to take when there is no item listed. My bestiary doesn't indicate having defeated any "new" enemies so it's clearly a glitch.

Yeah, I'm probably going to ignore this chest in terms of completion since encountering glitches in other versions of the game sometimes caused data corruption, etc.

I would hate to take the non-existing item only to find out later it corrupted some aspect of data or gameplay.

What I've found is that there are two outcomes for this chest.

If you head straight down the passage then hit the use button you get a standard Monster in a box fight, and when you're done you can't select the chest again to see the 'Nothing inside' caption, instead you have to go one space left and look down to see that message.

However, if you head down the same passage and go left one space, face down and select that chest you will get an encounter with 3x Grudge Puppet(which seem to have identical palettes to Goblins) and one Death Puppet, which is the same but with a distored and darkened shadow.

EDIT: The shadow actually looks more like that of the original Calcabrina outline from Final Fantasy IV.

I don't have the same problem as you though, I can attack and be attacked, I can't run because it's Monster in a box, however.

Once I finish the battle I can view thier Bestiary entries and it seems that Grudge Puppet is a palette swap of Calca and Brina and Death puppet is a palette swap of Calcabrina. They are bestiary entries 189 and 190 respectively.

Interesting. I've been mainly messing with the chest one space to the left. Maybe I should try the space straight down some more. All the times I have tried I haven't been able to open the chest. But then again, the space to the left sometimes wouldn't open either. Very interesting that you're getting some bestiary info with diff. monster palettes.

Thinking about it now, I think I do remember there being two chests together like that somewhere... and do remember spending a large amount of time in the old waterway. But that was several years ago so I could be wrong.

Thanks for the info. Makes me wonder if there are other chests like this scattered around in non-visible areas.

When I open the chest that is straight down I can attack and win (Goblins always named Eyewing Moth and Larva). But my meter still doesn't fill if I open the chest to the left instead (Goblins always named Grudge Puppet and Death Puppet).

It seems that both chests choose to not appear sometimes... and never at the same time.

Since you seem to be able to attack and win both battles, maybe this has something to do with how far in the game the player has progressed? I'm assuming you're further in the game than I am, and you backtracked to open the chest? Maybe if I come back later I will be able to attack and win against the Grudge Puppets and Death Puppet.
