I don't know if this has been done before, but here goes.
Post the games you think are the hardest ever (that you've played). List them in order of difficulty, if you want. Be specific on which part is hard (unless it all is). Here are mine: 1.) Super Smash Brothers: Melee (Getting the Crazy Hand trophy. It's almost impossible!) 2.) F-Zero GX (Good Lord, this is freakin hard. Story Mode on Very Hard is...like...) 3.) Contra (NES version....hard....omg...) 4.) Super Star Wars (Episode 4-6, they all freakin suck) Well, those are just some. 1. Devil May Cry 3: Dante Must Die mode (go ahead, try it)
2. Zombies Ate My Neighbors (50... levels... urk...) 3. Viewtiful Joe: Ultra V-Rated mode (if anyone can beat Fire Leo on that difficultly with Sylvia, you just might be the best 2D action gamer ever) 4. Ninja Gaiden Hurricane Pack (and you thought it was hard on normal...) 5. F-Zero GX (have to agree with you there...) -------------------- |

I'm not the best gamer in the world, so even normal/hard difficulties get to me.
1. Jak II - I just plain cannot beat the final boss. One battle and I'm done with the game, but I suck so much at it, and lack ammo etc. 2. Devil May Cry 3 - Even Normal mode frustrates the hell out of me. I guess my hand-eye coordination sucks. 3. Viewtiful Joe - I can't quite say why it's so hard. I just die. Alot. |

1. Ninja Gaiden 1 (NES) - Granted, it's been a long time since I've played it, but Jeebus does that final boss suck! Also, level 6-2 is a true testament to how bad this game is out to get me. Really, I've played through enough times to get near the end without dying at all (which ain't easy itself), but once I get up to this point the Ryu Body Countâ„¢ starts to skyrocket.
1. Battletoads (NES) - Can anyone really disagree with me here? One of Rare's very few games with a high difficulty, and it can (often) be brutal. 'Specially bad if your controller's just a teeny bit unresponsive. 2. Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES & Genesis) - It's a great and humorous game, but it's like you keep playing and wishing the end would come but it doesn't. And all the while it's comparable to being tied to the back bumper of a car and dragged at 55 mph over hot asphalt. 3. Adventure Island (NES) - One life, a drunken-looking beach bum guy and over 60 levels - and lot 'n' lots of monsters fond of projectiles and generally causing much pain. You do the math. This is the only game on this list I still haven't beaten, which you'd think would make it higher numerically. Given enough time, I could probably beat it now, but I don't wanna deal with the frustration anytime soon. 4. Toki (Arcade, NES, Genesis) - I actually never owned this game, but I used to spend hours playing it at a certain arcade. As a monkey who hawks his clearly potent acidic spit at enemies, things should be smooth sailing. But you're "ambushed" too many times by unexpected animals that hate you, puzzles that, more than a few times, force you to exceed your time limit, and the most difficult part of the game, level 6, resets all the continues you’ve stashed away to 5 - even if you managed to get an unlimited number of ‘em. Needless to say, level 6 bites. 5. Ikaruga (GameCube, Dreamcast) - Although it's a "new-school" shooter, it's still one of my favorites of all time. Mainly 'cause it captures the essence of a 2D shooter almost perfectly, and its style wouldn't work out near as well if it were in 3D. Still, getting killed is commonplace and parts are more frustrating than difficult, but it's the kinda frustration that really annoys ya. I won't even go on to list the games set on the highest difficulty modes... -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. Oh Battletoads... many a night I awake screaming to that game...
FFIII without the blessing of savestates. I tried it once resisting the urge to use them. I couldn't do it, just way too hard. Fester's Quest WITHOUT a turbo controller. Heh, with a turbo controller... beat that game with my feet Dragon Warrior I. Yeah, 2 damage a turn against the final boss. Even with Game Genie codes I gave up on this one. -------------------- This is my world: (Got my second chapter up, 3rd Chapter about 80% complete) http://www3.sympatico.ca/daniel876/homepage.html |

i know what you guys mean on the battletoads...damn it. honestly, perhaps you guys were able to beat this game easy, but i will say it again: star ocean 2! i couldnt beat the last boss if my life depended on it, and i barely got by the guy that yelled "spicule!!!" all the time.....ass

Krusty's Fun House (SNES) was incredibly tedious, not only because there was no way to save your progress, but because the game had you had to run back and forth to unlock doors and kill mice.
Quote I barely got by the guy who yelled "Spicule!" all the time. Vespar, right? Yeah, that fight took awhile for me, too. The guy who accompanyed him in battle petrified and poisoned and petrified my characters with that beam attack of his, so it was a pick-and-choose moment. Killing Mr. Spicule first is the best decision, though. -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

I haven't unlocked it yet (still hacking through the more-damaging-and-more-health-enemies hard mode), but on my friend's file it's brutal. Basically, it has hard mode enemies that all have Devil Trigger power. When enemies DT they turn a funny color and get WAY faster and use new, more devastating attacks. I beat DMC3 on normal with a good deal with time and difficulty, and hard mode is manageable, but the few instances I've played DMC have resulted in nothing but embarrassment. -------------------- |

Rogue, the only game that goes out of its way to shaft you at every possible opportunity. Not only do the randomized dungeons and items create situations in which you cannot possibly win within the given parameters, but the environment often forces you to play three-quarters of the way through before you realize that you can't actually make it. And just when you think it's all over, surprise! You have to do the whole thing over again, except backwards and with no food. I've never finished Rogue, and I probably never will. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever even met anyone who's completed it.

Beyond the Beyond. Despite the fact that you have a random encounter every five or six steps, the amount of leveling up required to beat the game is absurd. Lack of transporation early on, and really long dungeons, serve to increase the difficulty.
Also, a lot of the characters are Lunar rip offs. That doesn't increase the difficult, but it did piss me off. |

Well I only can think on the Arc the Lad II for PSX, the final boss and the lack of MP make me play this game just one time in my life....you know a game called Lode Runner?? ( Nes, I think-...) damn that's is a hard game, and Lode Runner II is impossible.

Tic Tac Toe ~ if you're the second person. I mean, it's just impossible to win if that first guy takes the middle square, the best you can hope for is a tie. Okay, lame joke. Sosumi already. </lamejokes>
Anywho, my vote goes to Ghosts 'n Goblins. There are just no words to describe the difficulty of the game. If level one doesn't totaly shatter your absolutly amazing gaming spirt, level two will. Level two is far from the last level. I almost don't even want to know what level three's like. Almost. It's a fun game for some reason, despite being impossibly hard. Here are mine:
1. Super Mario Brothers (NES)-The last 2 worlds frustrate me. If you die at the very end, you have to start at the very beginning. 2. Ultraman (SNES)-I can't even get past level 1 here. I can't figure out how to kill the guy. 3. Dragonball Z: The Legacy of Goku (GBA)-The Namek Temple is impossible without any outside help (FAQs and strategy guides). 4. Driv3r (PS2)-In one of the missions, a car is rigged with a bomb that will explode if you go below a certain speed. Add to this the crowded, narrow, and winding streets of France, and you got yourself a major pickle. -------------------- Ultimately a man must travel his chosen path alone. |

Well, I'd have to say that F-Zero GX was quite difficult, even though I gave up after like the 2nd level because it was so f'ing hard... and FFT hurt me much because I didn't really prepare for battles. But that's just me and my stupidity.

1. Hands down Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts(SNES). Granted Ghost 'n Goblins(NES) was hard but I found the SNES version beyond impossible.
2. Gradius II (NES). Go ahead, try it without using the Konami Code, continues, or save states. I dare you. It's impossible I tells you. 3. Crystalis (NES). Need I say anything about how hard this game is? 4. Bubble Bobble (NES). Not that hard until the last quarter of the game, that's when the true fun begins. 5. Q*bert (NES). $#@%!? 6. Super Mario Kart 64 (N64) on anything higher than 150cc. The AI cheats! I swear it does! 7. Einhander (PS). Could be easier if the bosses wouldn't mesmerize me every time I played. 8. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES). Quite possibly one of my favorite difficult games due to the fact that I actually beat it without a Game Genie. 9. Zelda II: The Adventures of Link (NES). DAMN YOU SHADOW LINK!! I could probably beat it if it weren't for him. 10. Mortal Kombat Deception (PS2). Regular play is just fine, once you get online however it's insane how many experts there are. Good thing I mastered Hara-Kiris. -------------------- "We could strap dynamite to our heads and roll around in fire. It would increase our chances of survival." ---- Red Mage, 8- bit theatre |

You really think Crystalis is hard? I'll admit, there were some REALLY tough parts, but for the most part it was about average. I beat it without a huge amount of trouble (amazing game, there).

I found Metal Gear Solid for the PSX to be kinda hard. The VR training missions (timed) I have a lot of difficulty with, thus I haven't much experience with gun training. As for gameplay, on my first playthrough, I barely got through the first boss, and I have NEVER gotten past the second boss. I'm trying again and I avoid walkthroughs and tips and tricks when I play any game for the first time through. I love this gaming series, though.

1. Perfect dark for the GB. I cant even get past the training missions!! It's like, dont run, or youll get caught, don't be seen, or you'll get caught. If you walk, you'll be seen.
2. Sonic adventures DX. The chao races. Not exactly hard it just takes a LOT of time to train them up. 3.Timesplitters 2. Dam. Hard mode. Chopper, zombies, fire, S.W.A.T teams, snipers etc. *sigh*. I'll do it eventually |

FF2, PSX version.
Man, I thought it was a fun game. I really did. It bugged me how my spells would gain levels, and it would cost more to cast them. You couldn't cast a low level cure spell at the end of the game. And the stat system. Ugggg... I was going through the cave to get to the final dungon, and I could get a few levels in, and monsters would just wear my team down. I wish I could have finished it, but the game frustrated me so much, and I sold it off. Gauntlet - NES 101 levels IIRC... If you die, you start over, and your HP drops with time spent in the game..... Me and my brother got to level 94 before, and died... never touched it again. Rygar - NES One of the most underrated games IMO. It was a great game. Unlimited lives, but no way to save, and it was a LONG game. -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

Gauntlet - NES:
I couldn't get past the low 30s, but my father was very good at the game, and I used to watch him play. He couldn't clear the second to last level. He quit. It looked hard. Super Mario Bros. 2 - NES: Everyone seems to think that SMB1 was harder, but, man, I can't deal with this game at all. Once I get to world four of five, it's all over for me. Illusion of Gaia - SNES: I can get most of the way through this game, and I think I even managed to beat it once, but I can't do the bonus dungeon at all. Evergrace - PS2: Again with the bonus dungeon. The rest of the game isn't bad at all. FFX-2 - PS2: This is embarrassing. There's some kind of huge dragon that just eats me. It's been too long since I played for me to remember what it's called. I think it was in another bonus dungeon deal. Here's one: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysey. Even with unlimited lives, ya gotta admit THAT game was hard. Never played Exodus. Munch was pretty tough, too, but not as hard as Oddysey.

Super Mario Bros. the Lost Levels, as it is on Super Mario All-Stars(SNES).
If you thought that SMB1 was hard, it is actually quite easy compared to this game. It was impossible for me to beat. Most of the levels require you to make insane jumps with enemies coming at you as soon as you land. And it has Poison Mushrooms, which are really annoying. I have never beaten it, even with an unlimited lives cheat! This post has been edited by Shadow Monroe on 22nd June 2005 02:25 |
