Caves of Narshe Forums > Final Fantasy VI > Famitsu's FF6 Oral History

Famitsu's team did an interview with a bunch of members of the Final Fantasy VI dev team to celebrate the game's 25th anniversary in Japan. Siliconera did a translation of some of it here: https://www.siliconera.com/2019/04/29/final-fantasy-vi-staff-talk-about-the-rivalry-with-dragon-quest-that-helped-the-series-grow/

Here are a few things I saw that I found interesting:
  • The dev team was about thirty people, pretty large for back then.
  • They were worried about making games to match the quality of Dragon Quest from the era.
  • It was the first mainline FF game to have a dedicated sound programmer.
  • The game was only a year between kickoff and going gold.

That's a lot of cool info!

Great read, Ranger. Amazing how quickly they made the game, especially considering modern games' dev time.

Yeah, that was my takeaway as well! A game that good and they turned it out in that amount of time... to be fair, the complexity of modern games, even really great ones, definitely requires more time in the art, programming, and testing realms, but even so that timeline is pretty breathtaking.
