Or are the enemy sprites way more impressive in the original Final Fantasy than in the other two 8-bit installments? The enemies in FF2 look ok, but in FF3 they look so cartoony and/or silly. Any thoughts?

Not sure what you mean. Final Fantasy's enemy sprites were pretty good, but Final Fantasy III's blow them out of the water. They are better, with more colours (at least, I am pretty sure there are more colours).

FFIII had easily the most detailed sprites of the 8bit era. FFI looked un-inspired and I've never played FFII
