Has anyone else gotten hooked on this before? I played Saga 2/FFL2 on the gameboy growing up, and even though I wasn't very good at it it was still really fun. As a kid I didn't really understand the stat growth formula and liked to buy tanks because I liked using modern technology more than fantasy stuff back then. And thus I struggled against bosses like Apollo... a friend told me I was supposed to not attack Apollo until he transformed so I'd run away for those first six rounds and that may be why I didn't beat him until I was 16 even though I had gotten to that point eight years prior.
There's also the FFL2 on the DS (Saga 2/ Goddess of Destiny) which sadly can only be played via emulators with the English fan translation patch. The translation is decent though awkward at times. Monster evolutions are fun to mess around with. Most guides and LPers like HCBailly would stick with the Baby Dragon monster and then jump to a Sprite by the second world which is rather overpowered for the content you'll face at that point. But sometimes I like messing around and eating a bunch of meat just to see what else I'll become, though I'd say 80% of the "first world" monsters are junk. |

I played 1 and 2 on the Game Boy as rentals, and I too was very bad at them. I tended to rent Game Boy games when I was sick and planned to stay in bed too far away from my NES, so that might have something to do with it - in any event, I didn't get very far in either of them either. I really enjoyed the monster aspects, though I was confused because the games didn't feel like Final Fantasy games even back then. I was happy to be vindicated on that later once we Westerners started to understand what Nintendo and Square were doing to us to mess with our heads.

I played this game a ton on Game Boy, but don't remember ever finishing it. I think it's because I only ever played it when I was with a certain group of family friends; I'm fairly certain we decided to start a new file every time we got together. So I guess I have a ton of hours poured into the first 20-30% of the game...
Nevertheless, it holds a special place in my memory. I didn't know there were remake versions but it's nice to see it in an original form and not under the guise of a Final Fantasy game. I remember thinking the branding felt a little off, even though the name is probably why I bought it in the first place. -------------------- I find your lack of faith disturbing... |

I had a friend who played Legend 1 on Game Boy at school, and I remembered that it had some interesting mechanics (like expendable weapons) and really nice battle music.
I recently tried to get into it on my own but found myself just repeatedly killing lizards outside the first town. I might need a bit more time to either read up in a guide or be forced to figure it out on my own due to not having other games to play, haha. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros.
