Caves of Narshe Forums > Final Fantasy VI > Evade bug: good or bad for the game?

Posted by: Golden Energy 5th January 2018 18:01
I just did a playthrough of this game and I was thinking: would the game be better or worse if the Evade bug were fixed? How much would it change the character balance, or the overall challenge? Would it improve the game or make it worse?

I can see both sides of the argument, so I'm curious to here what you folks think.

Also apologies if this was discussed before, I did a quick search but didn't find anything.

My memory on such bugs is fuzzy at best, but I seem to recall that later releases of the game did patch that bug. Perhaps the GBA version, or maybe iOS/Android? If someone with more knowledge or a better memory than me can verify, that might go a long way to answering the question for you. smile.gif

It was fixed in the Advance version, but I'm sure there's also a patch for the SNES version too. I don't think it's a deal breaker, though some fights in the game are probably improved by the higher difficulty. I don't see any way that fixing it would make it worse, though it makes certain fights and dungeons much easier.

The evade bug does cause one to miss out on part of the intended experience. Mt. Zozo is populated by high evade enemies that dodge most physical blows, for instance. There's also some statuses that make it easier or harder to avoid physicals, Haste being one of them that aids evasion when it's working proplerly.

Unless one is intentionally exploiting it, it's probably not that big of a deal. Early game is a bit harder and late game gets easier as high M. Block boosts are more common than high Evade boosts. Shadow and early game Locke are the most negatively impacted by the evade bug. Celes benefits more from having the bug present as she easily reaches perfect evasion with it.

I prefer it fixed out of principle or something most of the time. I'll admit that it's fun to mess around with 128 M. Block setups once in a while and when it comes to the Fanatics' Tower, the evade bug makes it easier for my berserked ThiefKnife Locke to steal from enemies there (this being the other location mostly populated by high evade enemies).

Is the darkness status bug part of the same bug or a separate thing?

Yes. Like with the attack Ink, which inflicts darkness, doesn't actually lower the attack rate at all. So, yes, it's the same bug.

I was thinking about Mt. Zozo, and also the Lete River because of Ink. One thing it makes easier is that you can ignore several Relics that help evasion, which opens up extra slots.

The darkness status shows up pretty often even in early game, so with regards to difficulty I think the bug does make the game easier.

Absolutely. You can also basically not bother buying eye drops, and use them as extra gil. You can also probably save money on Relics too, though I'm not sure.

In what context? cool.gif I'll add emoticons to sound more human. Do you mean that the experience with the game is hampered by it? Or does it make the game easier to beat because it makes enemies less difficult to destroy? wub.gif

A general answer is that it helps my situation. On low level runs it helps that I don't miss enemies I must kill. I don't know if the bug works both ways but it's an error on the programmers part that we get to exploit. biggrin.gif

As for normal runs through the game and/or safe ones I don't think it makes that much of a difference. This game is established enough to where you shouldn't have difficulty beating the game unless you're careless. This game doesn't allow you to make the enemies more difficult. I've had to do that myself. thumbup.gif

I could imagine that blindness could easily end a low-level game pretty quickly if this glitch wasn't present.

Not when Terra and Celes have magic at first. If blindness effected AutoCrossbow from Edgar and Sabin's Blitz the game would be a little harder. Might have to use Cyan for SwordTech more often.

Also, the enemies aren't that huge of a threat at low levels. You can run from most of them or beat them if you must. If there were a legal way of modifying the game to make it harder then the bug/glitches would be more prevalent. Or they've been fixed.

I'm not going to mess with a game that isn't mine. It's their mistake if it matters at this point.
