This topic was prompted from an ongoing discussion in the "Rare Entries: Get Your Game On" topic, as well as others in the Regalia Championship topics. With the Regalia tournament behind us, several of us think that it would be fun to think up some more tournament brackets, trivia, and other forum games to do here in the forums.

So, this topic is to help brainstorm different ideas for what we could do. A few subjects we could discuss is:

1) What names that we can use (CoN-Test? CoNival [like carnival]?);

2) What type of forum game it might be (Predictions from brackets, trivia contests, etc.);

3) Types of prizes (personally, I think it'd be cool to create a badge for the winners/organizers, or even better: the winner could be allowed to add an emoticon! [that's not lewd, of course]);

4) Subject matter (maybe more specific music, like battle themes, or favorite moments/levels/etc);

And basically, whatever else you want to think about/volunteer for.

Quick idea for a prize type: a custom avatar for a limited time could be a cheap and handy idea.

I was thinking of something similar. That would be a cool prize that seems simple enough. But it's like giving students a gold sticker; the truth is, everyone loves getting them smile.gif

I'm not really in the mindset to dream up new games at the moment, but I'm happy to contribute some things that we've done in the past and/or will likely do again in the future to help out some and try to keep the conversation going; maybe some folks out there have forgotten some of these. I'm doing it all from memory and a quick glance at CoN news, so forgive me if I have any of the details wrong.

FF Music Brackets
As we just completed, ran in 2017 and 2010. Not going to spend too much time on rehashing that, since we just did it, and because I'll probably blog about it at some point. These usually have physical prizes and forum badges (though I think I haven't made those yet for this time around).

CoNCAA
We've done this every March for NCAA men's basketball since 2001 or 2002, I think. We'll continue doing it. Usually this ends with forum badges, though, I think for a couple over the years we might have done AmaCoN gift cards. This game runs via ESPN with a forum thread tied to it.

CoN World Cup
And once or twice for the European Cup, I know. This game will probably run again this coming summer for the World Cup, at least, if the interest is there. It used to run using a manual spreadsheet setup that Neal and I put together, but now it has custom code running on CoN to power it. Forum badges are in the offing here too, I don't think we've ever done cash or other prizes.

General CoN Forum Sweepstakes
We've run these a few times mainly for people who post in the forums at certain times, like the fifteenth or twentieth anniversary windows. These have come with more special-er forum badges representing the event - you can see them on my profile, I'm sure. Usually forum posts are the entry fee to the sweepstakes, with physical prizes given to the winners. In the past those prizes have been CoN logo prints in various sizes, or more recently the Final Fantasy XV sodas that I stocked up on a while back. For the last CoNvent Calendar of fanart, we did custom forum badges for anyone who voted on all of the days of the calendar, too.

CoN Quiz
We've run the automated trivia quizzes a few different ways now, dating back almost to the start of CoN when we did so few of them that I graded them all manually. We now have the functionality to run them on the site using custom code, and we did run a contest a long time ago on who could get the best cumulative score over a window of time that had forum badges and AmaCoN gift cards involved. This is one I would always like to see come back, possibly with a new Facebook implementation to run along side the one on the site, but I would need far more help than I currently have to consider kicking it off again.

CoN Fanfiction Contest
We did a fanfiction contest a very long time ago, soliciting new fiction from authors and judging it. We gave away AmaCoN prizes and forum badges for this one, too; I don't see it ever coming back because we really have no bandwidth to take on fanfic submissions at all any more, let alone multiple ones at one time that need to be judged.

CoN News Contest
This was a failure of a sweepstakes, because for some reason few people have ever even noticed that CoN members are allowed to post news for us to promote to the homepage. The contest was a sweepstakes to give away AmaCoN money to people who contributed news when we first set up that feature, and IIRC, nobody hit the threshold to actually get any of it in the end.

CoN Holiday Fanart Contest
We did this simultaneously to the fanfiction contest, trying to get visual artists to submit fanart on a theme of "Final Fantasy characters on holiday." It too suffered from a lack of entries, even though we gave out pretty big AmaCoN gift cards and forum badges for winners.

CoN Name That Tune
Not quite like the old game show, but we did a contest about ten years ago in which we used the CoN quiz system to play a game where staffers would submit a clip of some music they really liked and CoN members would guess which staffer submitted it. It was a pretty neat idea because we had a lot of staff back then with very varied tastes. The prizes here were again AmaCoN money and forum badges.

InCoNgnito
In this contest, a few staffers made up fake personas at the forums, and members needed to guess which fake user was which staffer. This one was a fun concept, but the way we managed it was pretty poor and it left some hurt feelings, IMO. I don't think we'd have enough staff or membership activity to try it again now.

100k Post Contest
A guessing game triggered when the forums hit 95k posts to allow people to guess when we'd hit 100k. The prizes here were things from the old CoN store that no longer operates because nobody really wanted the stuff. biggrin.gif

We also have done some other fantasy sports games over the years, like American football and English football, and those leagues typically gave out forum badges too. Not much else to say about those, really, and I think that covers just about everything.

Edit
OK, maybe not everything. Obviously I didn't discuss previous Rare Entries, which is what spawned this topic, nor did I comb the forums to find anything else that was run forums-only over time. Only other thing I can think off the top of my head in that regard, though, was the chat Quote of the Week which is also not likely to ever return.

Edit
Also I changed the topic title because every time I see it I think it's another thread about why CoN doesn't cover game x and I ragestroke a little.

The one I'd be most interested to see, personally, is a music identification quiz, but I don't currently have the tools to snip out music samples and then upload them somewhere for other people to guess them (though I think I could use Audacity and some sort of file hosting arrangement to do this).

If we do that right we could give points for different tiers of identification -- for example, identifying whether a track is from any Final Fantasy game, then identifying what game the track is from, then identifying what that track is used for and/or its name in the OST. That could be fun.

Meanwhile I just ran across Crazy Chocobo and I'm thinking of running a tourney for "strangest FF track".

When I get my computer running again, I'll see if I can get Audacity working too. But I also wonder if we can find another way to do that in a less technological way. Like, basically a scavenger hunt: find obscure facts about music or something else involved in Final Fantasy, and it can be a race to find out who finds it first.

Speaking of fun puzzle/trivia activities, this isn't really specifically FF-related or even gaming-related, but the MIT Mystery Hunt is this coming weekend -- it starts at noon on Friday January 12 and runs round-the-clock until 10 AM on Monday January 15, both eastern U.S. time. If you're interested in solving puzzles and/or identifying trivia, both of which are big parts of the Mystery Hunt, I'm a part of a team (which I helped put together ten years ago). You don't have to stay the whole time of course -- just pop in at your leisure, or maybe if I find stuff related to videogames (or for that matter, soccer, basketball, etc.) I can bug some of y'all.

If you're interested in actually joining the team, which basically just means hanging around a slack server next weekend, let me know in PM.

That sounds really cool cool.gif

I was also just thinking that we should plan something next year for the NFL Playoff and Super Bowl. What about doing the Regalia Championship then?

OR! We could have a tournament for the next game CoN will cover tongue.gif

I'd also like to do something lining up with WrestleMania, a CoNMania, where we could choose which Square characters would win in one-on-one fights.

Thank you. One of the things I like about the idea (other than the rasslin') is that these events/games, once they're set up, can be annual events that can bring people back around whenever it happens. I think it could be good for the site.

I'm always up for this each year; I do one with my dad every season using the same site we use here anyway.

I don't know if it will make any of the American fans interested in it but they introduced a draft game mode this year in addition to the normal game. So rather than everyone picking whatever players they want within the salary cap, instead you're drafting the players like with the MLS, NFL, etc.

I'm bumping this thread so I don't create another one for CoN World Cup interest checking. I would need to get started on setting it up pretty soon if people want to do it, and also I'm likely to be out of the country for some of the tournament this time around, so I'll want to know in advance if it's going to happen. Thoughts?

Edit
Yes, if current plans hold it looks like I would be out of the country for the last matchday in all groups as well as all of the round of 16. No idea what my internet will look like on this trip if it happens, so I'd probably have to get some help in recording scores and creating matchups, so the more I know, the better.

Well, I've been underwater for weeks but I can still start setting things up. Four players is a bit thin, but if I can get things started maybe I can drum up a few more...

If anyone knows of a place that has CSV or TSV formats of the squads, that would be a huge help. Organizing the squads for the first goal scorer setup is always a big PITA.
