Not working from home any more, I'm sure I'll soon have to call in sick to work for one of the opening two days. Because, yes, it is very nearly time to watch more basketball than is healthy; March Madness is nearly upon us.

This is, bar none, the longest-standing site tradition (at least among those that have nothing to do with Final Fantasy!). There's always lots of players and lots of smack among those who are sports-rabid, and always lots of fun as people who really should have no business winning (that might actually include me, come to think of it) often do.

I'll be happy to call forth all the old stats like usual; for now, though, let me just get you all the link and solicit any early questions you might have if you're a newcomer.

So, additionally, I got sick of looking at code today so I I jammed all of the above results into a spreadsheet and ran some numbers to get our highest performers. For each year, I took the participant's ranking and gave it a score based on the number of participants that year, under the assumption that more participants meant more competition, and therefore a bigger victory to do better than others that year. I then totaled them all up and came up with three results: raw number of points won, average points per year participated, and average points per year if you've played four or more years out of the seven complete years (meaning you have to have been in over half the tournaments, not just show up once, win, and sit at the top of the table forevermore).

Raw Points
1. Neal
2. SSJ-Cloud
3. Kappa
4. Tidu-who
5. Sabin

Average Points for "Career" Players
1. Tidu-who
2. Laszlow
3. baralai
4. Kappa
5. Super_Moogle

Average Points
1. Gabe
2. ClockDoc
3. GamblingCat
4. Tidu-who
5. Laszlow

And, FYI, we have sixteen entrants already, not a bad start! Selection Sunday, the day in which the 65 teams are announced, is March 15 this year. After the selections are made, this day, you can make all your picks in your personal bracket. The games start at noon American Eastern time on March 19, and no picks can be made after the first game starts. That gives you about three and a half days to make your picks, and I'll harass you all when the time comes.

Also, if your team name doesn't make it clear, please let us all know who is who (if you haven't already) so we can keep it straight.

did anyone see the UConn-Syracuse game earlier tonight? That was incredible! One of the most entertaining college BBall games I've ever seen.

I fell asleep at halftime, which was really 2/7 time. I can't believe they won again in OT last night. I don't see them beating Louisville tonight, though.

You've got about 36 hours to sign up if you haven't, and either way you have 36 hours to get your picks in. We're doing pretty well on signups but could always use a few more!

If you're looking for advice on your picks, SI.com has a nice section set up. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/ncaa/mens-tournament/

I know that Y! seems to be having a miserable time keeping their stuff working, so keep trying if you haven't gotten your picks in yet. Maybe for next year I'll write a custom bracket system for CoNners only. :\

Posted by: Neal 18th March 2009 16:44
I designed the sheet we use for ours at work. It's pretty popular, and it would be really easy to change the scoring method. I found a great function that allows me to immediately see everybody's picks for any particular game, too, so I have easy access to pick distribution. Fun!

I don't know how I forgot about that, because I used it as the basis for the massive spreadsheet I made around this time last year for our http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/forums/ipb/index.php?showtopic=12201. Perhaps we could use the logic you've built into your sheet to power a web-driven application for future games.

In other news, Yahoo seems to be working quite nicely at the moment for those waiting to get in picks. You have about 22 hours.

Posted by: Rangers51 19th March 2009 11:11
Last notification before it's too late - to play it safe, you'll want to have your picks locked down by 11am American Eastern time today. That's a bit under four hours from the time I'm posting this, and Yahoo still has been a bit goofy with the brackets breaking, so don't wait until the last second.

If you're looking for the day's highlights, as in you're not a huge fan but want to check out some good games, I suggest starting with the very first game: Butler and LSU should be one tight matchup. Mississippi State vs. Washington at 5pm ET has the potential to be highly entertaining as well, IMO, and at 9:55pm ET, you can see my beloved alma mater try mightily not to choke.

Posted by: Rangers51 19th March 2009 17:05
So, time for the early losers:

Boats N Hoes (wait, who was this again?) who picked every game but the championship and therefore starts off with a possible score 32 points less than other folks' possibles;

Dragon_Fire, who didn't realize you had to make all the picks at once, not like a soccer bracket where you pick after each round (oops!) and therefore has picks only for the first two days of games;

Olly and Anh, who didn't bother picking anything at all despite tons of reminders to do so and therefore are the biggest losers of all.

Posted by: sweetdude 19th March 2009 17:46
Huge thanks to R51 for the video feed. I'm going to enjoy watching adverts for the next while. Oh and maybe a bit of basketball. It's interesting to hear 'travelling' again rather than the 'marche' I'm used to.

I've been away from a computer for the past few days, so I woke up this morning and only had a few minutes to get my bracket in before work. I just took the auto-fill of favorites and then subbed in my own Final Four. I hope it works out for me.

At least I didn't take them to win two games, like was my very first thought.

Posted by: Rangers51 21st March 2009 01:39
So apparently Yahoo is doing a second chance tournament this year that allows you to do a new bracket after this weekend is over, using the sweet sixteen teams. I opened a group for us to play in that - I'm not going to count the points there or anything, but I guess it's a chance for those who are doing not-so-hot to save face:

You're telling me! I saw that they were getting whipped and just stopped watching. I was getting ready to hop into bed and all of the sudden they started making a ridiculous comeback. Why tempt me like that only to come up short!?

Had inklings of Illinois vs. Arizona in 2005. The most amazing finish to a College basketball game I've ever seen...

Yep, I lost a F4 and three S16s last night - I'm confident that I am now done.

Posted by: Sabin 21st March 2009 14:39
Not exactly intentional, but my two major brackets that I play-in yearly (this and a money bracket) are nearly always opposite. So when I do terrible in one, I do amazing in the other. Taking into consideration I am in 21st on CoNCAA lets you know how good I'm doing in my money bracket.

It's amazing though. For all my first round losses, I've only lost one Sweet 16 team (Utah). So it's certainly not too late to rebound.

But everyone must admit that when you see a great game unfolding, such as the two sensational overtime upsets, or a complete underdog wrecking a top seed (a la, Cleveland State, American ALMOST getting it over Villanova), you forget about your brackets and just watch.

Of course, it's easy for me to say that considering in nearly all my brackets, I only had Wake winning the first round.

I know full well that I can't analyze as well as Neal can; however, he's both traveling and has some really high-priority CoN work that he's working on right now. That being said, I should point out that I can analyze that of the people making picks, only three of them are all the way out right now: Dragon Fire, Del, and Mimic. Not a good year for the non-Americans so far!

Next up on the chopping block will be MogMaster, who has already lost his champion and therefore will probably be passed up by some of the leading pack after tomorrow, possibly Friday. After that, we'll probably see waves of knockouts as popular Final Four and Champion picks lose; if you go by seeds alone, folks who took Memphis, 'Cuse, Kansas, or Michigan State are the most vulnerable.

I'm actually really surprised how many people took Nova in that game, from a brief look. I thought that was going to be my game to pick up some extra points.

Posted by: Sabin 28th March 2009 16:56
If I was more efficiently observant, and had more time on my hands, I would do the scenario generator for everyone a la Neal. But as I was far more interested in my diminished hopes, it looks like my hopes hinge on one of two aspects:

M S U winning the whole championship

OR

MSU beating Louisville and Oklahoma beating UNC, with one of the two at very least making the championship game.

Go SoonerSpartans!

Posted by: Neal 28th March 2009 18:24
The Favorites:
Bobbo (18.8%)
Bobbo has the most chances to win remaining in the tournament. His hopes rely, as he mentioned, on MSU and Oklahoma - nobody else has MSU as the champion, and only one other person has Oklahoma in the championship game. However, in every situation where Bobbo wins, Oklahoma beats North Carolina.

Sweetdude (18.0%)
Sweetdude was a prat and chose all the #1 seeds to advance to the final four, but given what we've seen, that might not be such a bad choice. He is probably the overall favorite, given that his hopes don't rely on any one team - however, Louisville, Pitt, or MSU cannot win it all.

Pink Nu (10.9%)
Pink Nu has a good number of possibilities to win, but there are some must-win scenarios. Louisville cannot advance to the final four, and Connecticut cannot be in the championship game. He needs Michigan State to go far, but if they win it all, Oklahoma cannot have been their opponent.

The Potentials:
FH (9.4%)
Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh. Pitt must beat Villanova, they must be in the championship game, and they almost definitely have to win it all (two scenarios exist where Missouri can win it all).

Super Moogle (9.4%)
This is a longshot given that Missouri must beat Connecticut for SM to continue on in the tournament. However, they took out last year's runner up already, and have been able to put up a lot of points. Villanova almost definitely has to beat Pitt, as well.

ChiTown (9.4%)
I'm guessing this is Tidu, but I didn't recognize the Yahoo ID. Louisville has to win the entire shebang for him to win it all. As soon as Louisville is out, so is he. Nothing else is really that important.

Geek (7.8%)
In this case it's all about Connecticut. Connecticut must win it all for him to win the tournament. They also cannot be playing North Carolina in the championship game.

Not Bloody Likely:
Hamedo (5.1%)
The championship game must be between Louisville and Oklahoma, and even then many other games have to go a specific direction.

Gabe (4.7%)
Pitt must be in the championship game, and has to be playing Michigan State or Missouri, but MSU cannot win. MSU has to beat Louisville.

Nate (2.7%)
Connecticut, Villanova, and Louisville have to win their E8 games, and Louisville must be in the title game.

Waste Of My Time:
Josh (1.6%)
Missouri, Pitt, Michigan State, and UNC all must win, then Missouri and Pitt have to meet in the title game. Winner doesn't matter.

Mike (1.6%)
Villanova, Michigan State, and North Carolina must win, then North Carolina must beat Michigan State. Missouri/Connecticut is inconsequential.

If your name isn't here, YOU ARE OUT AND YOU HAVE FAILED.

Posted by: Rangers51 28th March 2009 19:17
1.8%? Please. Mizzou and MSU beating UConn and Louisville respectively is all but a mathematical certainty.

Posted by: Neal 28th March 2009 21:58
The percentages are based on number of possible winning outcomes versus the number of total outcomes, so it assumes that it's equally likely for any team to win.

Posted by: Tidu-who 29th March 2009 15:14
Yep, Chi-Towners is my go-to name. Go Louisville! I'm surprised I had even that left....

I was really happy to see Nova win last night, and for Duke to lose the other night. Good stuff.

Posted by: Anh 29th March 2009 16:15
Sorry, I didn't know how to play.

Posted by: Neal 29th March 2009 19:59
Last night's games bumped Josh, Super Moogle, Gabe, and FH from the running, leaving us with just eight people available to win.

But now we might see a bunch more leaving - GO STATE!

Posted by: Kappa the Imp 29th March 2009 20:24
A little peeved Neal ruled me out of winning before.
But it's all irrelevant because I am officially bumped by Louisville's heroic collapse.

Posted by: Neal 29th March 2009 20:47
I didn't rule you out until just now! Nate, Hamedo, and Tidu are all eliminated. MIKE IS STILL ALIVE.

Pink Nu (31.3%)
Sweetdude (31.3%)
Bobbo (18.8%)
Geek (12.5%)
Mike (6.3%)

Bobbo and Geek are eliminated with an Oklahoma loss, Mike is eliminated with a North Carolina loss.

Posted by: footbigmike 29th March 2009 23:15
Waste of your time, huh? HUH!? I got this.

Seriously, though, how in the hell have I not been eliminated yet.

Another year of getting within sniffing distance of victory, only to be thwarted by the TAR HEELS! Yet another reason to hate them (not that I need another reason)

I can be at best 2nd and at worst 7th

Coming off of a 1st place, I think this can be chalked up as a successful year?

As usual, the tournament for my picks boiled down to a few consistent rules:
1. A darling team that was miserably upset... West Virginia (past: Texas A&M, Kansas, Wake Forest)
2. A gut/researched pick that ended up well... Villanova
3. Flipping the coin and choosing the wrong team on a toss up... every 5/12 and 9/8 and onward.

Someday I'll follow my gut and stop getting heartbroken over bad picks.

Just three possible winners left.

UConn > UNC: Sweetdude
UConn > Nova: Sweetdude
UNC > UConn: Sweetdude
UNC > MSU: Mike
MSU > UNC: Pink Nu
MSU > Nova: Pink Nu
Nova > MSU: Pink Nu
Nova > UConn: Sweetdude

I could come in at best 2nd and at worst 12th. I think I'm alright with that.

Villanova have been a really good team to watch. It's such a shame I've mostly been supporting the other team. And that's why I'm hopeful it's going to be a VN v UConn final. That would be brilliant.

As for the prat part, yes it is very prattish to go for the #1 seeds, but I picked my teams in about 1 minute flat; mostly top seeds because it most of them felt easier to pick. I did put Cali down to beat Memphis, so that must count for something. North Carolina to win just because, to me, they are acute to the others' obtuseness, if that makes even the least amount of sense...

Yeah, I noticed in your overall picks that you had a few actual upsets picked, so I wasn't seriously annoyed. I just get annoyed when people pick absolutely no upsets.

Tonight is a huge game. If UConn win then, according to Neal, I'll win the tournament, and R51's prophecy will come true.

people who really should have no business winning (that might actually include me, come to think of it) often do.

Holy god Mike is still alive.

Such a prescient avatar, Neal. Shocked Marle is shocked (at Mike).

Unless Nova somehow manages to pull this out and then beats MSU, I'm locked into 14th. Thanks, scenario generator!

Locked into Top 5! It feels good to reach your goals.

I think it's great that the Big Ten and ACC really showed the Big East what's what (but props to the Big East nonetheless). I'd love to see the championship back to the ACC but honestly, if mike wins, I think I'd smile as well.

PS: Bobbo. It's Big Least.

WHY AM I STILL ALIVE

I think regardless of outcome, I can be happy that I did better than last year.

Ah well. MSU played a great game last night, can't complain. UConn bottled it with 10 minutes to spare. They looked terrified.

UNC have been like a steamroller. No wonder they're called the tar heels.

lol MSU
lol Big Ten
lol Mike won

Villanova, Michigan State, and North Carolina must win, then North Carolina must beat Michigan State. Missouri/Connecticut is inconsequential.

It was foretold in the prophecy.

It's so hard to find a bright spot to this game. I mean, good that MSU lost, but I would have been happier finishing second in the conference to the national champion. Also, any game that Mike doesn't win is a good game.

That's got to be the least likely winner, based on the odds, that we've ever seen in CoNCAA. That's apocryphal but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Mike now enjoys... sigh... a $25 AmaCoN gift card, a dollar for each player who actually made all their picks, IIRC?

And, once again, my bracket sucked.

Now I must translate my sorrow and pain into progress by devoting my full attention to my fantasy baseball team.

So, I discovered today that Yahoo does not archive NCAA tournaments. And I don't have a full ranking of the 2009 results either, other than a few I've been able to piece together. I have an email out to Yahoo to see if they can provide the full data, and I also have a message out to Neal to see if he might have it from his analysis. However, I'm going to guess that neither of those two avenues will work.

So, if you were in this for 2009, can you please log into Yahoo at this link: http://profiles.sports.yahoo.com/ and look for CoNCAA Tournament Pick'em 2009 in your Fantasy Archive? Please PM me your team name and your final rank (## of 28) so I can keep our stats going. Thanks!
