I've only seen the first episode so far as I just can't seem to make it be top on my list for viewing right now. Quite enjoyed it, as I do most things with Martin Freeman, but beyond that I can't say much and will probably have to avoid the thread for spoilers from here on out. smile.gif

I missed the series 3 premiere, but I'll be tracking it down very soon. I'm intrigued to see what kind of plot shenanigans happened to get this series back to its status quo.

Me too, I avoided it altogether until today when I caught up with it all. I thought the whole series was great. About the part you mentioned HolyCeles, at the time I thought it was quite comical how Holmes was patting himself on the back and Watson was berating him for his proposal, while the whole time they were being conned themselves by someone else. In hindsight it seems like they lost a bet and had to somehow weave in this ridiculous twist and make it plausible. I think they did quite a good job considering how silly and ruinous it would be in just about any other series.

And Moriarty, I'm guessing it's not the real Moriarty and instead a copycat. Or maybe it's Mycroft making sure Sherlock isn't going to Eastern Europe for a fatal 6 months. Or maybe it's the fan club. Or maybe it's Moriarty himself again one-upping Sherlock after his own successful faking of his death.

If moriarty did fake his death, i really don't see how, because he shot himself, and we saw the blood, and it was definetly him. I doubt it was Mycroft, i have a feeling it's something to do with Magnason ( or however you spell it, i'll just say the bad guy from S3)

How about a well timed blood burst pouch? I sure someone as smart could think something like that up ahead of time, seeing as anticipating moves is mainly what people like Homes and Moriarty are known for.

Anyway. Yes I love the series and the new season. I'll be looking forward to the next one in 2-5 years....

I think Sherlock would know if it was a blood burst pouch thingy. He would be able to tell.

So, nearly exactly four years from my last post in this thread, I finally actually finished watching the series. While I enjoyed the series to its end (and I do think it's probably at its end, regardless of what Moffat and Gatiss might say in interviews), I did think that the fourth series swapped a lot of its cleverness to try to be more generally "exciting." The final episode played out more like a TV-friendly torture porn than what I would have called a classic mystery, and in fact the whole thing kind of felt like it was running out of a bit of steam after

Mary died - and to be honest, Mary's whole backstory seemed a little overwrought to me too.

All that said, my hair is starting to grey a bit at the temples, and if I can look half as dashing in silver as Martin Freeman does in S4, I'm totally down with it. heart.gif

One other random thing: does anyone else ever get the Final Fantasy IV overworld theme stuck in their heads when listening to the Sherlock title sequence?

Sherlock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzCEIBaV1Es (at about six or seven seconds in)

While I've never watched it and honestly, don't know much about the show other than some People on the Internet think it's hot garbage, goddamn that would have been distracting for me if I did!

This sums it up better than I ever could. The show is absolute garbage.

Ye beat me to it! It's a great video, despite the length Worth watching. The series never sat well with me and then I found this and he absolutely tears it apart.

That's an interesting video, but my god it goes on.

It makes some good points - as Sherlock advanced, it did get worse and veer away from the crime-solving deduction to more grandiose show-boating and blockbuster nonsense. Yeah, S4 is bad. it also makes a pretty good critique of Moffat's writing from the "one episode vs whole series" perspective, which I've never really thought about before. His solo episodes in Doctor Who are world class (Blink, oh my god), but by comparison Capaldi's Doctor (a characterisation I personally loved and wanted more for) had some really shoddy stories to work with.

The discussion around the unaired pilot is intriguing. I never knew about this before. That it has less shoehorned threads and is half an hour shorter does sound better; but perhaps this is less Moffat's issue than demands from studio execs? Or possibly the BBC decided half way through that the show had to run for an extra 30mins?

Saying Moriarty is one of the most memorable characters in fiction and this show massacres that? As a name, a context, yes, but iirc he doesn't really actually do much in the stories outside of The Final Problem - hell, he's only in one other story out of dozens! There isn't much character development at all. Moffat-Moriarty's craziness is also a display of hubris, and of enjoying the game. It's an intellectual challenge for Moriarty - who in this adaptation is bored of always winning without trying - and gets obsessed with the competition, just like Sherlock does.

Also, the claim that Doctor Who, Sherlock, and possibly Jekyll/Hyde as #3 are the only British pop culture characters? WTF? I mean, how far off the mark do you want to get to try and engineer a pretentious point? Guess this guy has never heard of James Bond, King Arthur, Robin Hood, Harry Potter, Long John Silver, anything by Dickens, or Austen, any Lord of the Rings characters, an endless supply of classic British sitcom characters...

The video author is quite a pompous prick though. He interprets everything as being so anti-viewer (or rather, anti-him), that it gets quite tiring. By the time he gets into the critique of aesthetics he seems to just be trying to labour his point with ever-decreasing logic that ignores or undermines his earlier points. Saying they replay animations and draw attention to scribbling noises because we're too stupid to understand is trite. How about it's just a stylish way to enhance what is otherwise a soliloquy - which sadly just isn't "Saturday night TV"? Saying that a dismissal of the novella storyline as being the wrong conclusion is a big FU to fans is a negative interpretation - how about it's a witty side joke to the fans - you'd have to know the original story to get the reference, and then they go and say "hahaha, not this time wink.gif ". Yes, the show has its flaws, but I think this guy just willingly doesn't want to like it. Sherlock isn't perfect, and it isn't 100% faithful to the Conan Doyle stories, but it is a re-telling, a re-imagining. It doesn't have to be identical to the source material - that's why it's only source material. I love the original stories, and for different reasons I also love Sherlock (though I do prefer the older episodes).

As a final aside - one thing that video does highlight well is the Rathbone movies. They're pretty dated, but if you really like Sherlock, they are must-see films.
