Caves of Narshe Forums > 2017 Regalia Playlist Championship > R2: #3 You're Not Alone (FF9) v. #6 Opening Theme/Bombing Mission (FF7)

You're Not Alone took out the final boss theme from FF8 in the first round and did so fairly handily. Not as handily as Bombing Mission, though, which recorded the second-most-lopsided score in any of the 32 opening-round matches, trouncing the original Final Fantasy battle theme.

You're Not Alone is another Distant Worlds favorite. Previously, it picked off a fairly easy mark in the Main Theme from Final Fantasy II before running aground against Forever Rachel. It plays during a time of great drama, and is itself rather dramatic with an instantly-recognizable melody that I catch myself humming quite frequently despite not having played the game in over a year.

When Final Fantasy made the big leap from Nintendo to Sony, from sprite to polygon, from 2D to 3D, Opening Theme / Bombing Mission was there. Starting with quiet strings and chimes, this track accompanied a visual tour through Midgar, transitioning directly into the action as Avalanche executed a raid on a Mako Reactor. This track was famous before the game was even released.

Was never really a fan of You're Not Alone, while Opening Theme + Bombing Mission is just extremely iconic and impactful. My vote goes to the latter.

Wow, tough match-up for me, here. I really like both of these tracks. In the end, my vote came down to a nit-pick: Opening Theme/Bombing Mission plods through a long and nebulous intro (though it does make sense for that part of the game) before it gets to the good stuff. You're Not Alone doesn't keep me waiting like that.

Tough match, an unsurprising what's taking the win, but I'm still voting for the FFVII track. It has a greater impact on me, for sure.
