Well, Pat R., he who wrote the masterful dissertations of the Final Fantasy and Chrono series' (and one essay on Blood Omen) at socksmakepeoplesexy.net has published a nice 10 minutes read on Final Fantasy Tactics as well, and as usual I recommend everyone check it out. While I think he was a bit more critical of the third act than I am, I have to admit I find myself mirroring his words when I'm reading George R. R. Martin's books ("Boy this is a good medieval political drama...I hope it doesn't turn into a big supernatural war.") so I guess I see where he's coming from. And besides, anyone who's read my posts knows that I do the same song and dance about putting the creators ahead of the company, so it's nice to see someone else put those thoughts into words:
"Despite what the studios would like you to believe, the strength of a work depends on its creator(s), not its title or brand name" http://socksmakepeoplesexy.net/index.php?a=fft -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |

Quote Final Fantasy Tactics marks the first appearance of Gloom Cloud. He's not the same character from Final Fantasy VII, though he is the same character seen in Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts. Gloom Cloud is Cloud without any of the snark, poise, and charm that make him more than just a confused sad sap with a big sword, and he's pretty much the only version of the character that appears outside of the original Final Fantasy VII. So true. I really liked his sorting of the jobs into Best-Dressed and so on. I haven't read it all but I'll do so when I have time. Great article! -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |
