To elaborate, you'll be able to beat Lavos at many different times in the game (as early as the first time you meet Marle in Leene Square, 1000 AD) where in a normal playthrough you would have gotten creamed, thus opening up all the different endings.

More specifically, there's a sparkle on the right telepod at the Millennial Fair which takes you straight to Lavos. I'd recommend using this method to reach Lavos over any other because you don't have to fight the tedious rehashes of previous bosses during Lavos' first form.

It is true that you can go straight to the "inside" of Lavos and fight his "true" form if you go straight through the teleporter. Of course, you can only get one of the several alternate endings if you beat him that early, and your party will be limited to Crono and Marle. (Really not difficult with those two, of course, especially if you have good equipment.) Still, the ending that you earn from that route is entertaining, so it's worth doing at least once.

Actually, if you time it right, you can fight with just Chrono. Very challenging, VERY fun. ==

Yeah, I took Lavos down with just Chrono at like level 40 or something, it was a rewarding experience. In any case, someone mentioned using the teleporter because it keeps you from having to tediously battle through other bosses, but I seem to recall that it slightly effects certain special endings as well. Is this just wrong?

You will get a completely different ending every time you beat Lavos somewhere other than the logical end of the game. The only difference in the special endings themselves that I can recall is whether Frog appears in some of the endings in his amphibian form or in human form as Glenn, which depends on whether you killed Magus or not.

There can also be differences depending on whether you smashed Epoch into Lavos or not (i.e. whether you still have it). But ending-wise, using the telepod at any given point produces an identical ending to using the bucket at that same point. The only differences are that you can access the telepod much earlier (but in NG+ only) and that you avoid the boss repeat sequence. That's what I meant by it being my favoured method: not that you should always finish the game as early as possible, but that at any point when you DO want to finish it, the telepod is the quickest way to do so. And you do have to fight the last Lavos shell form before going in. The only downside is that the inside passageway doesn't contain a save point or a return warp if you use this method.
I can attest that it's possible to reach every ending from the telepod (except Epoch variations) because that's exactly what I did (except for Ending 1, where I went through the Black Omen). The only other possible difference relates to a bug in the PSX version: there's a part of the game during which a finish shows you Ending 6, but will save Ending 5 data to the system file. I read somewhere that using the telepod vs. the bucket could make a difference here, but I can't find it now, and I never verified it. This post has been edited by Tiddles on 1st August 2004 22:23 |
