Caves of Narshe Forums > General Topics > Post Your Desktop: The Return!

Posted by: FraudulentTommah 26th May 2004 01:11
A year ago I made a post called Post Your Desktop! where I was curious as to what my fellow CoN members' desktops were like. This post ended up with very few replies, most of which I attribute to poor hosting capabilities.

Since http://imageshack.us is a free image hosting site who allows you to direct link, you have no reason not to share your desktop smile.gif.

To take an image of your desktop, it's probably done by pushing PrintScreen, then paste it into a graphics editor of choice.

Aaaand finally, here's mine, a bare desktop shot and an action shot.

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/9369/fraudulenttommah-action.png

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/2296/fraudulenttommah-desktop.png

Please try to keep your images to around 800x600 or less. It helps load the page faster and breaks tables less. Thanks!

Better yet, just link your images to avoid thread pages with insane loading times. Nice desktop by the way. smile.gif

I'm not on my personal PC right now (how's that for an oxymoron, eh?), but I'll give you my wallpaper anyway: http://www.nuklearpower.com/8bitmedia/bmback800_600.jpg. Should you not be familiar with 8 Bit Theater, then go read it. All of it. Now.

What are you still doing here?

Here's http://www.geocities.com/runelancer/desktop.jpg; promotional art for Endless Saga. Scaled down to 75% of its size, because I doubt any of you feel like downloading a 1280x1024 screencap.

If you can't tell, I'm NOT a desktop-y person. I see my desktop once: when I boot up Windows. Then, it's gone. Way too restrictive; I can access all of my documents with Windows Explorer, not with the desktop. Same goes for programs (most of which I've hotkeyed anyways). The desktop's always been just... "there" for me. Completely useless. wink.gif

And yes, I'm in the habit of working on multiple projects at once. My website, Extractool (as described on Mnrogar's boards), and Endless Saga itself ("Blank" because I just copy-pasted a template project from one of my folders when I started it, and never saw a point to renaming it. Far more trouble than it's worth.)

Yes, yes, that IS Windows 98. What? My baby's 6 years old and still in top shape. Don't come criticize her OS. ;P

Posted by: The_Pink_Nu1 6th December 2004 03:14
I'm surprised many of you appear to launch very few programs from your desktop. I figure the desktop has a purpose, so you might as well take advantage of it.

WARNING: Large bitmap:

http://www.geocities.com/hblhawks6_2005/desktop.html

Yep, it's boring.

EDIT: Geocities doesn't have reliable uptime. Please forgive it.

Well, I guess I'll post my desktop, but I'm warning you, it's not pretty. I decided to go with a different approach for the icons on my desktop...having been inconvenienced because I'd have to move my active window farrrr to the right to get to some icons, I just started putting them around the perimeter since XVI32 only takes up the space in the middle of the desktop (hence no icons are covered...see how that works?). Anyways, enjoy:

May look familiar to one or two of you. i mentioned it in its respective topic. It still holds the record for longest time without a change. Its either that good, or I got incredibly lazy. Yay for cool icons.

Well, I'm not up to par on all this "It's probably done by pushing PrintScreen" business for my actual desktop, so I'll just post my desktop pic:

I'm running dual monitors so the Screen Capture is a bit different since it captures both monitors together.

Monitor 1: 22" Res. 1360x1024, Wallace & Gromit
Monitor 2: 17" Res. 1152x864, Angry Kid

Keep in mind that it's a HUGE file since I don't have time to "work my magic" on it so it's an acceptable size.

Heh, I like MogMaster's. shifty.gif

I can't get a shot of mine either, and my desktop pic isn't really worth posting. It's a weird black 'n' brown design I've had for, like, three years with only four icons scattered on it. It's not far off from being the most boring desktop ever.

OK, Hanyou finally bludgeoned me into actually using a wallpaper again. This is from my new PC at work - I just got it Friday or else it would have more stuff on the desktop. This wallpaper is really only temporary because I have a tendency to use only ones I design, and I haven't designed any in a while. Also, I censored a couple things that you shouldn't see.

I made the wallpaper earlier tonight. It features 3 pictures of Gackt in which he looks exactly like I picture Zendel, the main character in my novel 2600. I used various effects to give it the atmosphere I was going for. I also created my own Gothic desktop theme. Just about everything on my screen right now is black and red with Gothic style lettering. It kicks butt! biggrin.gif

-Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles wallpaper (even though I know very little about the game itself)

-a fanart of Mega Man X on a speedbike known as the Max 1; the art is called 'MAX 1' and is by phungdinhdung (I don't remember where I picked this up, but it's probably from Dr. Cossacks Lab: the Mega Man PC Website (http://interordi.com/mega_man_pc/))

[/EDIT]I like variety, so I change my desktop every once in a while. I've had my laptop for around seven months or so, and I've had three wallpapers for it.

The first one was a wallpaper that came with my Skies of Arcadia Dreamcast disk. If you put disk 1 in your computer, there are several wallpapers and images there! http://www.planetdreamcast.com/soaworld/Downloadpages/downloads_wallpaper.htmThe one that I used for several months is on the top row of "Official Skies of Arcadia/Eternal Arcadia Wallpapers", the second from the left (the sky scene with The Albatross flying towards what appears to be Pirate Island). I was inspired to use it because I had only recently obtained Skies of Arcadia Legends and was reexperiencing SoA all over again.

After I got bored of the SoA wallpaper, I went on a search and found some fan-made FF VII wallpaper on animewallpapers.com that was really cool-lookin'. http://www.animewallpapers.com/game/final7/The wallpaper I used was on the top row, second from the left (Shinra, INC. building scene).

The one that I've used since early March or so I found on beautifulwallpapers.com. The site has a little too much cheesecake and beefcake on it, but there are some good desktop images there. The one I'm using from there is an Australian landscape http://www.beautifulwallpapers.com/roach4.shtml

So that's all, folks. Nice topic you have here.
Edit
One of the links was bad. And I mean really bad. On a side note, I'm too technophobic to do a proper desktop scan.

My background's one of two things. Generally, I use this one (cropped slightly as my resolution is 1280x1024): a desktop pic of the main character from a game I'm developping. Lately, in anticipation of the legendary Hitchiker's Guide movie, I've had a HHGG desktop picture.

As can be seen, I throughoutly detest desktop shortcuts. smile.gif

cheers man, I used the link and had a look. I didn't like a lot of it because I don't want wallpaper that shows just one final fantasy character, as I admire so many of them, thus I ended up going with a FF9 wallpaper from your link that shows practically all of the main FF9 characters. It's quite cool.

My latest desktop image is a huge NO SPAM sign. You can find it (800x600) at http://web.mit.edu/derrict/Public/nospam.PNG . A beautifully simple, elegant, MS-Paint-produced image. Measured out with precision. Print it out and throw it at spammers--e-mail spammers, forum spammers, bulletin board spammers, and general annoyances who like to flood other people with useless information.

heart.gif I practically live off of that site. I used to have a background from there that had a drawing of a kid looking at a ring that said, "Why would you say forever?" and for a while I had the NPC she drew me, Trixie, as my LJ icon. Bare? Sure is, hasn't changed from last time. I don't use my desktop. It's the first thing I see, then I fire up the Windows Explorer and use that. The picture does have some subliminal advertising effect, though, and I often find myself dropping into MSVC to work on ES after booting up the PC. tongue.gif

Well here be my humble lil desktop. Nothing fancy really. Just a particular PA strip http://www.neilpolenske.com/tempImages/desktop.jpg

Odd though. I have a hefty 80 gig hard drive, but I always seem to be scrounging for space. I wonder why that is...

Beware by the way, I use my resolution at it's highest. 1280 x 1024

In case you didn't know, Tamami-Chan is a character from an anime still in Japan, called Mahoraba (Heartful Days). Square-Enix plays some part in it, though I can't remember what ATM. Needless to say, it is the first anime by square-enix that doesn't have some dark backstory or bloody scenes or anything of the sort (i.e. FMA). One of those happy happy things. Hard to believe...

http://web.mit.edu/derrict/Public/seraph_running.PNG
http://web.mit.edu/derrict/Public/seraph_running2b.PNG

The character is, again, from the Seraph flash game. (I don't remember the link; just do a Google search for Seraph.swf .)

Although, considering what I've been seeing on that desktopgaming website and that cool (or hot?) picture that that anime-pic person posted in the midst of stuff I wouldn't ever use, it might change soon.

I'm not sure how to post my actual desktop, so I'll just say what I've been using recently.

I used http://www.adultswim.com/downloads/tools/img/wallpaper/misc/fuji800.jpg from around October to around New Year's. I saw it in an Adult Swim interlude awhile ago, and decided I really liked the setting and the tint on it.

After I replaced my hard drive around a month and a half ago or so, I decided to return to http://www.gamepapers.com/image_big_fr.php?id=4748&nom2=Skies%20Of%20Arcadia, a wallpaper which I've used off and on for the past three years or so. It's an official wallpaper from Skies of Arcadia, which is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. However, for some reason planetdreamcast.com has joined the ranks of FilePlanet for all of its wallpapering needs, so I had to resort to Google to find it again.

For the past two weeks, however, I've been using http://www.space.com/images/bestgalactic_sombrero_02.jpg. It's a side view of a galaxy that the Hubble telescope found a few years ago. They decided to name it the "sombrero galaxy", even though it's basically a nifty side view of a spiral galaxy like our own Milky Way. When I saw this picture, I immediately knew where it was going. You can find all kinds of different resolutions on spacetelescope.org (as detailed as 175 MB), but I decided to go easy on you by posting a much easier-to-view smaller file.

I cleaned up a bit my desktop before taking a pic from it.

http://img105.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mydesktop7ey.jpg

I have the same wallpaper for 3-4 months, all I know where this picture comes from is that it was made by someone called Shingo from the Shaman King staff. That's the only information I was able to find.

Sadly, my Windows XP is in French and that's annoying. sad.gif
But I'm getting used to Linux so that shouldn't be a problem anymore. smile.gif

Laszlow, to post your desktop, simply use a screenshot program or press "Print Screen" on your keyboard and paste it on a program like photoshop or paint, then save. Host it with something such as www.imageshack.com

Offtopic: I know there is a program that will change your desktop picture every so often, but I have had trouble finding it. Can anyone send me a link?

I always used to have this one:

http://img156.imageshack.us/my.php?image=marichan1iz.jpg

...because I bought a Mari-chan mug a while back and went on the website, and just fell in love with the background. And, earlier this morning, I made my first background -

http://img48.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lunabkd29tq.png

Unfortunately the sketch doesn't look too good scanned - in the actual picture the colours seem richer. There are plenty of things wrong with it too (for example, hands are too small) but I like it! Oh, and before I got this computer, I had a really bad one. I used to write rude words on the screen and find them extremely funny. smile.gif

I always just end up using screenshots of whatever I'm working on (edit: that sprite's a christmas version; I just didn't get around to switching back to the old textures... Ain't she cute? wink.gif ). Keeps me motivated. JPG compression fuffed it up a bit but meh, it's either that or 1.5 megs of 24bpp PNG tongue.gif

That's a cluttered desktop, IMO. More than 5-6 icons is cluttered to me. I need to clean up a few things. One of my collegues at work had more icons on his desktop than wallpaper; it was just... I dunno. I just felt so dirty looking at such a crowded desktop. :_:

Advice to anyone unsure how to post their desktop pics: go to http://imageshack.us/ It's free, easy to use, and even gives you a sexy copy-paste link to put in forums. You can be sure your bandwidth won't run out with them.

Edit: Threw in the second picture since I just changed my desktop pic. It feels damned good having the original sprite back in there instead of the christmas one. :x

Posted by: RenosGirl18 5th July 2006 16:45
At my mom's house...A shot of AC Cloud and Aeris standing back to back in the flower field. "They say you can't grow flowers here in Midgar..." is the quote above it with the FF7 Meteor logo at the bottom.

At my sister's house...a picture of my niece in the bathtub with Albert Einstein hair.

On my laptop...some weird blue design thing with a picture of Reno sticking his tongue out in the corner and "Reno" etched beneath. I also have a FF7 theme on my laptop. My recycling bin is Cloud holding the buster sword, when it is full he is swinging it. When you empty it it plays the victory theme. There are a bunch of things that go along with it. Very cool.

I treat my computer like a high class prostitute: it's always there waiting for me, I use it for whatever sick idea I have (like updating myself on CoN), and then leave it again, usually with all the stuff I just got done with still on it. tongue.gif

I think that Hikaroo and I tie for messiest desktop. Hers looks like less b/c her rez is up higher than mine. But I'm one of those people that do: "I'll only need it for a minute, so I'll save it on my desktop!" And then the desktop is full. Note the "Old Sxxt" folder. I've dumped full desktops into that folder TWICE!

I pray that these don't continue the pattern that all these broken links take...

I recently had the epiphany to put an angel sanctuary background up, which is actually how the story ends, 2 pages straight from the Manga. **Spoiler Alert!** This is actually page X-million of X-million+2.

So here's my current http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h23/jeremiahsteward/Desktop-NoWin.jpg .

Before that, I went through a strange Sailor Moon mid-life crisis, i don't even know, but whatever... http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h23/jeremiahsteward/saturn.jpg will kick ur butt!

I also had for a long time a Schweeet Inuyasha Background, he's one of my three personal heroes. (Inuyasha, Batman, and Jesus)

Well, this requires some explanation:

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h23/jeremiahsteward/DesktopPic.jpg

I have a dual screen setup, but it's makeshifted between a 15" LCD monitor, and a 19" CRT monitor, meaning that my resolution ranges are different for both. The CRT (Right) is slightly higher resolution than the LCD (Left), so sizing and positioning are slightly different. This also means that when I drag my mouse between the two monitors, if I wheel to the top left corner of the right screen, it does not roll into the left screen, as there's an edge.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h23/jeremiahsteward/Specs.jpg

And in case you were wondering, that is the Ion drumset that is coming out for Rock Band 2. I'm totally getting it, and I'm keeping the pic up for inspiration... September, baby!

Edit: I spelled dual like a moron. Durrrrr...

Posted by: Olly 2nd August 2008 15:46

That's my desktop on my laptop at the moment. I have a soft spot for robots, I guess and felt like I needed a new one after discovering that Josh had L4D kids as his too. I'd like to point out the "Dell Dock" which I admit is a blatant rip-off of a Mac's dock style, but all the same a fun feature for me. Shockingly enough, my computers are the -one- place where I like to keep everything neat and organized, so cluttered desktops always get me nervous. Having that helps me keep everything easily assessable without losing anything in how she looks.

If you notice the clock at the bottom right hand corner, you'll probably also get a good feel for my sleeping habits too. (Or lack thereof.)

I know exactly what you mean. I keep a 'TO DO, DO IT' notepad file and a universal 'University' folder on my desktop and that's it. My friend has the Dell Dock and he's told me it's quite useful.

My other friend feels the need to keep clutter to a minimum, but instead of simply sorting everything into folders, he has two icons on his desktop, and the resolution as high as it will go on his 22" HD monitor. In other words, you can hardly see the icons, so what in the world is the point in that? It's not even a desktop it's more like a cover.

I would like to post mine, but it's just a picture of my girlfriend and my best friend, and four icons. Not very interesting.

Wizwum: And I've been indulging in memes too long too; my first thought in response to yours was "take it easy".

I've recently got a computer with Windows 7, and I've been enjoying its wallpaper-changing feature. (I got one for free for XP, which actually worked slightly better, but this will do.)

I currently have a whole folder of wallpapers, set to change every three hours. They include but are not limited to the following:
* two pictures of lightning bolts
* one picture of rain over mountains
* one picture of a lake in Grand Teton National Park
* three pictures of clair from Kiddy Grade
* two pictures of Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion
* one picture of the Apollo 11 rocket
* one picture of a pair of wind turbines over a grassy area with some cows
* one picture of a pool table, snatched off of Wikipedia
* one picture of an open glass jar with conpeito floating out, a nod to Stellvia of the Universe
* the various country-specific pictures that came with Win7, including a roll of hay from presumably somewhere in the midwestern US, a bunch of penguins on a shore in South Africa, and a photo of the White Cliffs of Dover

Edit

So I just discovered the http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/wallpaper/index.php, which is awesome. I grabbed the Pink Nu Spekkio one; plan to add that to my playlist.

By the way, is it possible to make even a basic 1024x768 version of the CoN logo but with all four colors? I'd totally use that. Or I guess I could snip them together myself given that they're all PNG files...

Okay, I just made this. This is 1024x768, made PNGs in GIMP. I don't know what the difference is between these two versions; there were two options when saving multi-layered stuff as PNG, and one was "merging" and the other was "flatten" I think. These are the results.

Okay, I just made this. This is 1024x768, made PNGs in GIMP. I don't know what the difference is between these two versions; there were two options when saving multi-layered stuff as PNG, and one was "merging" and the other was "flatten" I think. These are the results.

When I redid a bunch of wallpapers to match the new branding for CoNniversary this year, I actually did official versions of these, in case anyone wanted them. smile.gif

I's still sticking to my Magic: The Gathering Hottie trend, as well as my two year cycle, apparently, as I've had her up on my desktop for the past couple of months now.

New PC, new wallpaper. This is, actually, the first time I've ever used CoN wallpaper on a PC full-time for a variety of reasons. Full size 1920x1200.

Happy to see that my striped idea is now official! Maybe I'll actually get one that actually fits my screen...

Anyhow...

That's Chihaya Kisaragi, a character from the Idolmaster games/anime series. The screenshot comes from episode 4 of the second anime series (the one that's not the crazy alternate universe with mechs). Here she is, riding the train home at the end of the day, as her signature song "Aoi Tori" ("Blue Bird") plays as that episode's ending theme. I just think that this picture really reflects her personality well; she's quite a contrast to a number of the other characters who are all bubbly happy and such. She's not the most charismatic person usually, though if you give her a microphone and a stage...magic happens. And like me, she's much more interested in the music than the show biz trappings.

Her birthday, according to canon, happened to be yesterday, February 25.

I rotate randomly through this and 176 other possible wallpapers, every three hours. Short enough to keep it interesting, but not so short as to distract me with anticipation for the next one.

I actually just redid my whole OS look. I previously had Windows Aero going, but after Livestream Procaster and a few other programs expressed their disagreements with it, I got fed up and decided to switch over to Windows Classic. This time, though, instead of just taking the default settings, I decided to mess with everything -- the fonts, the color schemes, and all.

In case you're curious:
* Desktop background color (which appears in picture borders when picture doesn't fill the screen; I have it on "fit"): red 0/green 32/blue 0 (dark green)
* Active title bar color: left side 0 0 128 (semi-dark blue), right side 0/128/0 (semi-dark green), size 18 (default), text
* Inactive title bar color: left side 52/82/75 (a blue-greenish grey), right side 123/114/78 (something roughly tan), text color 212/208/200 (very light tan)
* Title bar font: MicrogrammaDMedExt, size 10, Bold

And best of all: because I've eliminated the bells and whistles of the Aero animations, my computer seriously feels faster. It wasn't slow to begin with, but the immediacy of pulling up menus and windows instantly and stuff needing next to no time to appear really does feel significantly faster.

Well, I certainly wasn't going to have UNofficial ones out there! smile.gif Plus, it needed updating anyway to match the branding of the others, so it was an easy call.

Not a new desktop, but a new experience: what happens when icons fail to load on my desktop.

Posted by: leilong 6th March 2013 03:33
So.... Long time no see...

I was randomly perusing facebook when a wild CoN link popped up, and I thought, "I haven't been there in awhile."

My computer recently did bad things, and I had to reinstall windows, and start from scratch... again... and I saw desktops.

My old post on page 4 reminded me of a simpler era, and I totally recycled that same image to my new desktop.

And again, hi to all the peoples I've neglected over the past 3 years. tongue.gif

Posted by: Rangers51 19th May 2013 17:04
I'd been using my old desktops for http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/forums/ipb/index.php?showtopic=3828&view=findpost&p=181787

I did some work to try to standardize the colors, but I didn't like how it turned out so I just left them as is. It's rare that I see both desktops at once anyway so it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would.

The black bar on the left side, btw, is because my left monitor is only 1280x1024 but my right side is 1920x1200.

Edit
I actually previewed this post so I wouldn't have to edit it for tiny mistakes, but for some reason I didn't believe it would actually post an exclamation point I didn't type, even when the preview said it would. It was after the Youtube hyperlink, so I assumed it was just some sort of error in the way the preview showed up due to formatting. That's a pretty weird glitch.

Posted by: Blinge Odonata 20th May 2013 23:25
is that Ireland? Looks like Switzerland..

Posted by: Death Penalty 21st May 2013 20:13
It is neither Ireland or Switzerland! I am still living in Ireland - though not for much longer - and so my wallpaper is actually to remind me of home. This is a farm in Lacrosse County, (western, God bless it) Wisconsin. Those lovely bluffs are common in the area: we're called the 'driftless' region because the glaciers didn't come through and flatten everything out the last time they were here.

Hah. This farm is of no relation to me, though I cycle through that particular area sometimes. My grandparents do farm on the Minnesota side, but for whatever reason I haven't any good pictures of their farm, so this one suffices.

Scrolling back through some of the old ones, wow, Josh's FFXIV concept art dual-monitor one is gorgeous.

Ah, that IS pretty.

That said it seems you're blessed with multiple screens of the same size that sit side-by-side. Sadly, I am not...

Posted by: Rangers51 24th May 2013 12:08
Nope, as you can see from my latest one, I am not, either. At the time of that XIV one, I was on two 1280x1024 monitors, and now I'm on one 1920x1200 and one 1280x1024. I don't mind it at all. smile.gif

Necromanced! My beer nerddom and my soccer nerddom coalesced today with the announcement that my favorite local brewery from my time living in Kansas is commemorating my favorite American soccer team. The label design they posted to Facebook was the perfect side to take over my smaller monitor on my work PC:

Might as well bump this while I'm here. I moved to a 3840x1200 setup for my work PC last year, and was too lazy to try to make my old smaller desktop (see like five posts above) size up properly. So I grabbed this off the internet and have it on both monitors.
