Chrono Trigger is a great game, one of my all-time favorites. A little short, though. I feel like New Game + was designed to compensate for this, but I have just never liked New Game +. Almost every time I've wanted to do another playthrough I forego New Game + and just start a regular New Game.
Why? Well, because the game is kinda easy to begin with, and plowing through it again while completely overleveled is no fun, at least not for me. I understand the point is to make it possible for you to defeat Lavos at different points in the game, and therefore obtain different endings, but since the enemies don't likewise level up, there's no difficulty and it makes the battles tedious and boring. What do you guys think? I know there are definitely opposing viewpoints on this and I'd love to hear why you love New Game +, or don't, or are indifferent, or any opinion in-between. |

Well, I'm not representative of the broader gaming fanbase, because I rarely replay anything, and Chrono Trigger was no exception, despite its being one of the best games of all time and one of my personal favorites.
I think I've gotten as far as beating Lavos with Crono and Marle, but after that, I just kinda lost interest in replaying it. I mean, I basically did all the content in the main quest already. And in this day and age of internet video streaming, I can just look up the other endings if I'm so inclined. I definitely like the concept, though; it codified a game mode that has become a very notable feature across many games. As well as the broader idea that finishing a game (or even getting a Game Over, in some cases -- as I was playing One Way Heroics last night) doesn't mean the game's done and gone past, but rather that you get something to keep and make subsequent playthroughs different. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I quite like New Game +.
I find being overpowered incredibly amusing, it's funny hitting low level enemies for thousands of points of damage. Basically the same reason I love how easy it is to abuse Junctioning and Card Mod in FFVIII to get overpowered on disk 1. I find normal battles a lot more tedious in CT to be honest. They're too easy to be engaging but not easy enough to be funny. It's a problem I have with a lot of FF games as well, especially in VI and up. I saw no point whatsoever in New game+. I mean...what the hell is the point?
By the time i unlocked new game plus, my characters were so maxed out, it was unbelievable. I gave new game plus a go, and i think i levelled up once in the whole thing. I never understood why they put it in... -------------------- Excuse me? Would you mind not talking while I'm interupting? |

To let people get the extra endings. One of them involves beating Lavos at the very beginning, with just Crono. Another involves beating Lavos with just Crono and Marle. A third involves beating the extra-strong Lavos outer shell at the Ocean Palace.

As an obsessive perfectionist, I always dove in with the intent of maxing out every last stat that I possibly could and compiling a max stack of every item in the game.
I don't remember if I ever actually managed that feat... -------------------- ~Status Report~ * Completed... Dragon's Head * Completed... Soldiers of the Empire: Disciples (release pending) * In Progress/Undecided... Of Love and Betrayal * Planning/Assembly... Where it all Began |

I agree that New Game+ has a minor influence on the game, it's simply for the completionist, and obviously made more sense prior to the internet streaming everything.
That being said, I did find a new use for it with an ex girlfriend of mine, who was intrigued by the game and its story. She wanted to witness the game, but cared little for the combat gameplay. Thus, I played through with massively powerful characters to simply breeze through every encounter and forward the story instead. Anyways, it was a fun way to share something I loved with someone, while not being bogged down by what they disliked about the genre. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! The Final Fantasies have stories that keep me interested even if they're rehashed or not. The story is smooth in these games with a good mixture of realisms.
I suppose Chrono Trigger feels a little on the rock 'em/sock 'em side. The characters and tech stood out. The plot honestly is too generic.
