NOTE: This was our 2006 April Fool. I think we got a few of you! -Tiddles
After several days of discussion with staff, Caves of Narshe webmaster Rangers51 has officially decided to take the next step in the CoN's evolution. After witnessing fewer hits on the main site, decreased participation levels in the forums, and generally lower morale among staff and members ever since the debut of the Final Fantasy VII section on February 13, 2005, R51and staff agree that sometimes the best course of action can be to admit a mistake. The decision to eliminate Final Fantasy VII content from the CoN was not an easy one for R51 to make. Echoing the sentiments of the staff who worked on the section, R51 states, "I really loved the FF7 content we made, I thought it was the best on the web. But in the long run it just wasn't bringing in the kind of clientele we were looking for to sustain the site." Even though this is certainly a step backwards in terms of site content, the CoN is bound to take a few steps forward almost immediately with the addition of a brand-new section to replace old content and hopefully generate new interest in the CoN. While the Final Fantasy VII section took a very, very long time to build, we've really worked hard as a group to finish up an all-new section and have it almost ready; look for it to launch sometime in the next week or so. If R51 has availability while he moves, it may even go up sooner. We know that our work will ultimately lead the CoN in a direction that staff and members alike have always hoped to see it go in. ------ It will be sad to see all the hard work of the creators of the FF7 section come to naught, but I, for one, am excited about the new direction the site will be taking. Hopefully, this change will begin to diminish the influx of FF7 fanboys and instead attract fans of the next game to grace the CoN's pages! Um...what? I'm sorry if I missed something, but why exactly did you guys take it down?! It was one of the best places of info on the damn game, it really is a waste! I can't really see why you guys did this, or how this benefits the site! Other than, 'we're FFVII hating extremists, so we took it all down'. I'm really sorry, this just seems a bit stupid to me.

We're definitely not FFVII-hating extremists - we wouldn't have spent all the time working on the section if we knew we were going to end up taking it down, or if we didn't enjoy the game. It's just as the newspost says - it was attracting a different level of members that we didn't care to covet.

Okay, you hate FFVII fanpersons. I still don't think that's such a great reason to blow away a great information section, but I'm not in charge around here anyway.

Hey, out of curiousity- naw, not gonna say it. I'm sure someone'll take notice.
Ahem. Anyhow. It's a real shame to see this happening. I agree that times are changing, and the average gamer's interests are changing. Websites must be dynamic in order to succeed, and maybe this is for the best. Well really, out of curiousity, how many hours were invested in the FF7 section? >"< Seems like so much work... -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

K that's really really stupid, are you sure it has nothing to do with the FF7 section at all??? Maybe there's another reason for it that you've overlooked. I really don't see why you should eliminate that section, FF7 was a great game also, I think most ppl just don't like how everyone goes on about how it's the best game ever when they haven't even played the ff's on snes and nes. But come on really, I really don't think you shoudl take it down. If you wanna boost morale why not work on adding an ff2 and ff3 section. I mean there hasn't been a single post thus far that supports this to decision, I think you should rethink it. You run the site it's your call, but I really don't understand how you came to this conclusion. Just dont' go off making an ff8 section and I think things will be ok.

Kekekeke! How terrible, that the site should round the corner only to go retroactive... I hope this decision will be overturned...like, really soon...

As a volunteer for the site, I actually am privy to alot of the decisions that the staff and admin in particular make, since they generally have an impact upon my workload. No joke, people. FF7 is going down. Coincidentially it IS April Fools day, but Josh is also moving so he figured it'd be a good time to do it- during a transitional period in his life.

OK, we just couldn't wait any longer. Check out the new replacement section!
Admittedly it's not quite finished, but hey, we're sick of being the only FF site that completely finishes a section before unveiling it. |

I knew this was gonna happen. FF8 hasn't been getting enough coverage here. And while I bash it constantly, I'm glad to see it's made its way on CoN.
Like I said, sites need to be dynamic. Things have to progress, and basking in FF7's glory just ain't gonna cut it. Technically today's well.. tomorrow (if that makes sense) so it took a good day to pull this off - a well-organized developement, I must say. Well... it sucks to see the FF7 section go but... Here's to FF8! *Raises his shooter of tequilla. Well, three of us here. One asleep, and one waiting for youtube videos to finish downloading. Catch 22. I agreed the FF7 section was indeed to blame for the diminish in general quality, but now, I personally think we're going to see posts about gunblades being awesum, how Squall was deep (when I have stood in deeper puddles and not even got the soles of my shoes wet) and how it's apparently impossible to go about looking up Selphie's skirt and if you hack the game to do so she turns out to be a he.
No one else agrees but mark my words, for they may haunt you... We totally should have gone with my idea for a section devoted to the AK47. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

While FF7 definitely has an abnormally high amount of fanwankery involved, if you're removing that series milestone and replacing it with FF8, the logic involved should certainly be questioned. The quality of a game has significant impact on the quality of its fans, and certainly a game's specific strength also breeds a certain devotion in a specific personality of gamers. That is to say that a game as devoid of overall plot cohesion, filled with deus ex machina, and one that literally insults a player with its immensely unbelievable backstory⌠it is unlikely to draw a significantly better crowd than the game it replaces.
Given such a decision, this author can only draw one conclusion: That even FF8 devotees -- capable of accepting such ridiculous concepts as time compression through either willpower or willful ignorance-- are significantly more desirable in the eyes of the staff than FF7 fanboys. And that is indeed disheartening. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

I'll just be off then. Terrible 'clientele' that I am.
I have a better idea, instead of getting rid of the content that is there and very helpfull, why not just cull forum members you don't like? To answer to a question raised by Silverlance, we can't possibly tell you how many hours the staff spent on the FF7 section, but it was a massive amount of time, and spanned over an extremely long period of time. And as said before in the thread, the feedback is really not what we had hoped..
Multiple games were considered to sorta replace the slot, and even with the voices against it (mainly one actually, with furry ears and whiskers), FF8 was chosen. We hope that the development of this section will take less long and less out of us, and hopefully will received a better feedback. As for me, I was rooting for a Parasite Eve section along with R51, but we got demoted due to the previously failed attempt (check CoN's history, you'll find out when this happened). |

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I love the section for ffvii. And I have to agree it was the best on the web. But since I've completed the game over and over again so I don't really need the guide. But still that guide was what attracted me to this site. Anyway I'd like to thank the people who made the guide. You got me through some tough parts in the game. So out FFVIII here we come!

I've been kinda torn on this front, but, in the end, I pledged my support. I mourn the loss of such excellent content, of course, but on the other hand, I do love controversy, and will be rather glad to be rid of the undesirables. I think the best we can do it remain optimistic and work towards becoming the best FF8 resource on the net! After all, it's not that bad a game, really.

I was pulling for a Chrono Trigger or Parasite Eve section, but the overall consensus was that FF VIII, despite the misgivings several staffers have for it, would be the best new content we could produce, for the site's own good.... As much as I dislike FF VIII, it can't be denied that it's a popular game and that its fans are somewhat less detestable than FF VII's. From what I've seen thus far of the new subsite's progress, the entirety of the new section should be up in a few months at the very most.

Bad move, removing the FF7 section is a bad move indeed, what is CoN's staff thinking, the FF7 section was great. Anyway, there are a lot of FF7 FAQs around the net so it really doesn't matter, that much. Good luck with the FF8 section, they are needed.

this is sad, the FFVII section was the most thorough i've seen on the internet, and by far the best.

It may have been the best FFVII coverage on the net, but I think I can live without it. Honestly, I think I was more depressed by the loss of the fanart. Some of those were really good and I enjoyed looking at them from time to time. And to think I had some fanart of my own of Cloud and Sephy in speedos lying around waiting to be submitted, too......... !
Still, I hope y'all didn't just jump from one fanboy game to the next. -------------------- |
