| I notice that Crono holds his katana next to his face, with the cutting edge pointed upward, and the blade pointed at about a 280 degree angle toward the ground. This style is the same as Kibagami Genjuro in Samurai Shodown 2. Is it common? It seems kind of "awesome but impractical." All somebody has to do is jump to your side and they can shove the handle into your cheek pretty easily... Isn't that kind of a transitionary stance, like, something you do right before you swing downward? |

| I'm medieval european sword trained so I can't give you an exact answer but I can give you my best guess. A katana is a slashing weapon, not meant for clashing metal on metal so, folded steel or not, the blade could shatter or bend too easily to come in and take a good blow to it' blade. You'd have to ask someone who knows the traditions and culture but a katana is lighter compared to most blades and due to it's nature, the people wielding it were taught to be incredibly fast; fast enough to make sure an opponent would never get that close. Again, I am not an expert, I'm just making an educated guess based on what I know from what I gathered while learning celtic long sword, and even then I specialize in spear and glaive so it's an even further longshot. It's also been a few years since I've held an actual combat ready traditional forged katana so I can't give you an actual weight estimate on it. If you can get to youtube look up some footage of professional japanese sword masters and see what you can gather. In my experience I've never seen his style before and it looks goofy and pointless and was put there for effect, but do a little reseach and let us know what you find. |

| I did about two years of katana training and the short answer is no. It's impractical to hold a katana that way, not to mention dangerous. Katana are incredibly sharp, and having the edge close to your face like that drastically increases the chances that you'll cut yourself instead of your opponent. The position is known as kasumi. The difference is that the block is held ABOVE the head, as opposed to beside the face. It's designed to deflect an overhead attack. The idea of the downward angle is like that of a pagoda, deflecting the opponent's blade the way a slanted roof deflects rain. As opposed to if you were holding it at an upwards angle, which would deflect the blade downwards towards the suba, which could lock the swords at the hilts and turn a swordfight into a test of strength. |
