Caves of Narshe Forums > Final Fantasy IX > FFIX: Any advice on fighting Ozma?

Posted by: Fatal 5th November 2010 13:00
So I'm on my second playthrough of Final Fantasy IX and am nearing the end. I'm on disc 4 and I have pretty much all sidequests done and am ready for the final dungeon. One thing I have left to do is fight Ozma. I didn't fight him on my last playthrough, because I didn't even know about Ozma last time until I finished the game. I know he's a superboss, though and superbosses are hard. Emerald Weapon taught me that. =\

Anything I should know or any particular way I should prepare?

Definitely equip something that can block or absorb Shadow/Dark on all your characters. That way if he uses Doomsday, you're safe and (IIRC) he takes damage. You'll want Auto-Haste, Auto-Regen..pretty much Auto-anything. It'll take you a few tries.

Find and complete the friendly monsters sidequest - you'll be able to hit Ozma with short-range attacks as a result.

I also huuuugely recommend leveling and bringing Quina - Mighty Guard is amazing, and Angel Snack is like Remedy on all characters, which is super useful since Ozma uses Curse, which can wreck your entire party with status ailments in one shot. And he likes to use it a lot. If you're bringing a healer (which you should), make it Eiko over Garnet, since if you have Phoenix, it will randomly revive your whole party upoon death.

It's really frustrating because it's based almost entirely on luck. Some times he won't cast Doomsday at all and will just pound you with Curse, so you'll be screwed, but other times he'll just keep healing your party and giving you enough time to beat the hell out of him.

He's actually not too difficult with the right ideas. He only has 55,000 HP. Kill Ironites in Burmecia with Freya to level up your Dragon Crest with her. It'll do 9999. Steiner with Shock will do a lot of damage and Zidane with a Trance will also be able to hit him for a great deal. You can actually finish the fight with this setup without doing the sidequests to do direct physical damage to him, and without him ever using Doomsday. Otherwise go with Neal's strategy, that's solid.

Some good things to have to make the fight a bit easier:

Shadow absorbing equipment; almost eliminates the need to have a dedicated healer since Doomsday will just about fully heal you.

Return Magic. Vivi and Amarant can learn this. Basically, Viva and Amarant will cast any magic that Ozma uses on them back at him. If Ozma uses Doomsday and you have both Vivi and Amarant in your party with Return Magic, that's three lots of high damage to Ozma and three lots of near complete healing for your party (whoever has shadow absorbing equipment anyway).

Auto Life. If you don't want to waste ability stones on them, use Amarant's Aura ability (casts Auto Life and Regen on one party member). If Amarant gets his trance during the battle, he can cast it on all of the party at once.

Having Quina on standby with Angel's Snack can be a lifesaver when Ozma casts Curse.

Egoists's Armlets and Pumice Pieces both absorb shadow, which I think is a must. Return Magic helps immensely by throwing his Doomsdays back at him. The big killer, then, is Curse, which does fairly good damage as well as a ton of status effects...Quina with Angel's Snack can cure those all at once. Zindane's Thievery will deal massive damage if you've been working on it. The ideal team, I would say, is Quina, Amarant, and Vivi, mainly because of the defenses you can get from them, Quina with Angel's Snack, Amarant and Vivi with Return Magic, and Vivi himself should also be able to use Doomsday...as long as Curse doesn't 1shot you, you should be able to take him down.

There be spoilers. I know Freya can do it too in trance by jumping.
