Of course FF9 gamers know about the romantic story between Freya and Sir Frately.
When you get to Cleyra Freya meets him however he has lost nearly all his memory and doesn't know who Freya is (very sad moment for me) and Freya is distraught etc.
At the end of the game they are back together in Burmecia and they're talking to each other and every one's happy.

Maybe I've totally missed something but what is the cause of his memory loss?
Any answers or theorys would be much appreciated.

He didn't regain his memory, he just fell in love with Freya again. Like she said

Or something. But yeah, that's all it is.

As for how he lost his memory, well...that's not explained. Maybe he got in a fight and got konked out and lost his memory. Or maybe he jumped too high and fell and went into a coma. Your guess is as good as mine. It wasn't meant to be thinked about, it's a plot device.

When I was typing NPC stuffs, I was actually keeping a sharp eye out for Fratley-centric information, but there doesn't seem to be any. As said, it's probably just a clean-cut plot device with no strings attached; shame, 'cause Fratley's rather interesting.

Well Fratley couldn't tell us, because he couldn't remember.
He probably fell adrift at sea, lost his memory due to shock of cold water, then woke up n the town that found him

OR

He hit his head, lost his memory, and woke up in the town that found him.

"Have you ever seen a baby do that before?"

Shotgunnova is correct. Fratley's amnesia is a deus ex machina.

Deus ex machina? Well, not really. wink.gif

"Convenient plot device," yes. Dues ex machina would be Zidane's sudden "Whoa, I'm naked and suddenly I feel all so POWAHFUL!" realization he could trance. Or Fratley himself, when he first appeared. THAT is deus ex machina. Not that I minded it, though... XD

Personally I think he got zapped with a magic spell.

The only thing we know is that Fratley went away on a long journey, Freya waited for him, and when he returned, he could no longer remember her. I don't think the "how" is so important as much as the fact that he forgot her, the love of his life, completely. When they're back together again in the end, it's the idea that love conquers all (heart over mind).

Yeah I like that point. I suppose that is the best explanation we will get.
