It was pretty hard actually, and i got killed a lot.

I was lvl 60 on rydia, and the rest between 62-63.

I won by spamming curaja, and summon queen for heals.

I don't advise any of you to miss 1 turn healing, because you will die for sure.

The fight before the one i won, zeromus spammed meteo on cecil and kain(my only survivors) and he got 3 turns in a row, and killed cecil before i could resurrect rosa.those fuma shurikens also really hurt.

I had:About 60 elixirs bought, 10 ether2 and 30-40 ethers.
I had 4 fuma shurikens, all the good weapons i collected, and some all the best weapons equipped.

I had cecil beating on zeromus, while kain was jumping, and edge throwing every chance he got.

Wyvern:This was quite hard, because he is really fast, and flare hurts a lot.He just spammed flare for me.
Shell doesn't last long, so spamming ashura might be needed, along with curaja.make sure not to send kain into the air almost dead.

Plague:I killed rydia, and brought her back to life, then resurrected everybody slowly, while doing damage.Use life 1, or sage staff, since he doesn't hurt you.If you do it correctly, it should reset your condemned timer to 10.

Ogopogo:Curaja with rosa, and maybe shell.Haste would be a good idea.Keep an eye out, because he has a pattern:Double wave=big damage, and next attack is likely a single wave against the team.Sometimes he uses single player attacks, so take advantage of it.

Lunasaur:They use regular attacks, and are quite easy with ragnarok(crystal sword in snes version) Sometimes they cast holy and restore, but not always.

What's the hard mode? Is that basically the original FFIV?

And dang, Zeromus spams Meteo. I would have expected him to spam Big Bang or something.

Yeah, the original ff4 japanese difficulty setting.

He spams big bang too, but didn't at that moment.

I think he has 200.000 health, but i could be wrong.I read somewhere, that psx version adds several zeros to health.Too bad they didn't add stacking items for ff4.

I sometimes refer to the PSX version as "hard mode", as well, simply as a term that shows the difficulty in the PSX version was a fair bit greater than the SNES version.

Basically, my experience with the end game he's describing is similar in nature to that of the original posters. Rydia, (so far as I can recall, and I believe the site we're on should confirm,) learns meteo at level 60, which I have told a friend or two playing the game themselves, is the minimum level for defeating Zeromous. Last time I played this version of the game, I was challenging myself by turning the battle speeds all up to the max on active mode, and despite dying the first time to a horrible spam of Big Bangs at the start of the fight, managed to pull it off the second try with relative ease. So much of that fight is keeping Rydia alive.

Also, it's part of Zeromous' attack pattern that when he gets to low health, he stops using BB every single goddamn turn, and gives you a break by throwing some crappy low-power meteors at you, that don't even always nail every member of the party.

It's funny, on the play through I mentioned up there, I found Edge to be the most useless/likely-to-die character every single battle up until the last boss, where he finally came out like the ninja he is and stomped by not dying, healing others, and hurling everything at big Z but the kitchen sink from my inventory.

It was when I was playing on fast-mode, incidentally, that I really came to appreciate the mechanics of that game, and how they successfully paced that game perfectly for a five person party at every single stage of the game.

It certainly is faster paced than some other games, and the base xp/gil isn't bs like FF5&10, because you get up to 250k gil, and 25k xp from monsters, and that is perfectly done for me.

I do really like ff4, but golbez really is like darth vader.

@ Mogmaster: do you mean pacing as for fighting in a battle or pacing as for leveling up over the course of the game?

hey mogmaster? i really don't like the stealing mechanic in ff4, because its practically useless, unlike ff5, where you get good opportunities to steal elixirs, and a bunch of other stuff.FF6 improved it, and in ff7 you could steal nice stuff. In ff4, edge gets hurt sometimes for failing to steal, which he does 75-80% of the time.

yeah i have taken low dmg from it, but it still sucks how useless edge is mostly, except throw.Image works vs behemoths, and red and blue dragons, because melee really hurts, but useless vs red laser attack while can take off 3/4hs of your health if you are too low level.

I actually mean both.

Usually, I only have 3 grind sessions to do in that game, and two are optional, with the last push on the lunar core being the mandatory one, and getting Rosa float for Leviathan before the sealed cave, as well as getting Parom and Palom some level 2 spells before Mt.Ordeals, being optional. Within the final dungeon though, the pacing is perfect. I can usually get away with only coming up for air once or twice when diving the core, just because the save point staggers vs the locations of the bosses and the increasing difficulty of the mobs are perfect. (By "coming up for air", I mean to shop. I sometimes partake of the free heals and save, but I'm not taking the walk back to the whale, so I've never left, really.)

The battles themselves are also really good though. The bosses, to compensate for the five on one situation, often attack numerous times or use attacks that come close to wiping the party. When you play on active at top battle speed, it makes the idea of being able to arrange spell lists extremely appealing, which of course explains the inclusion in the game. Even outside of the final dungeon though, recall the Scarmiglione fight, and how strange of a party you have at that point. It's a fighter and 3 casters, one of which is almost useless until 2 minutes after the battle ends. That said, it's just hard enough to be a pain in the ass, but not hard enough to be totally un-doable without a bit of strategy and maybe some luck. (Of course, having played the game over 9000 times, I knew to spam bio on him, and reverse my party rows before fighting him.) This was the first game to have an ATB in the series too, mind you. But every battle has a neat pacing that you have to fall into in order to win, and sometimes it takes a try or two to get the rhythm of it correct, which I found to be fun.

Hm, come to think of it, I have often said that a good JRPG should require only as much leveling up as happens by battling and winning every random encounter while going through the game's objectives once and taking every design-expected (not necessarily optimal) path(s).

And that reminds me that, I felt the game did it about right. Haven't played enough times to collect data like you have, but it's definitely one of those games that worked without too much grinding. (I do remember grinding on the moon surface though. Or maybe that was from trying to get the Bomb summon...)
