I'm on my second play through, and I passed this place in World 1, but I have no idea what this is/was/becomes

That is not a location, but it is a remnant of one of the four crystals, whichever one is left. When the last one shatters, that little rock thing disappears. Earlier in the game if you pass that, there are more rock things.

Oh. The seal. I remember passing it earlier and there being three there. Then I went to get the airship to get the screenshot, found out I can't get there with the airship, went there with the chocobo, and didn't think much of there being less.
