Any fans of the series here? both SaGa and Final Fantasy Legend as it was called on the US gameboy.

I've been playing Romancing Saga. It's basically non-linear, after a brief opening quest that differs per chosen character (similar to Dragon Age Origins) you're booted out into the world and forge your own way. Eventually you're supposed to find the threads of the main story and piece them together, I guess.

I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone really.
This is the original game on the SNES, a translation patch. It was remade on the Ps2 but I don't know anything about it.
I actually restarted because I dismissed someone from my party earlier and couldnt find him again when I needed him for a quest, looked it up and he wasn't anywhere the (lackluster) guides said he would be.

> As I understand it, every battle you win raises a hidden stat. That stat determines what quests/story you can do.
> So don't fight, or you'll miss out on quests and rewards.
> But good luck avoiding battles; enemies appear as sprites on the map and dungeons/badlands are full of them. Some chase you down, sometimes you're surrounded and have to fight through 10 battles to move 4 spaces.
> The battles are mostly easy, too easy, for most of the cast. Apart from times you'll know you're out of your depth if you meet a boss who one-shots your entire party.
>Some places can only be accessed by chartering ships, it's expensive, you have to fight to get money. If you're trying to travel the world and do as many quests as possible like me, you'll have to sail a lot.
>Some places are only available if you have certain characters in your party. I knew I had to get to Loban, I couldn't get there despite visiting all the adjacent areas, because I didn't have some dude called Gray recruited. I was checking everywhere he's supposed to be, but he wasn't there until later. Gah.

I guess a lot of this stuff is for re-playability, choosing different characters means you could have a different experience of the game every time. However I only want to play this once, and see as much as possible in that one playthrough. If I was a kid with one or two SNES games and a whole summer, I might've appreciated it more. Despite all that I kinda like it. blink.gif

Romancing Saga II and III are a bit better than the first. II involves a storyline that spans 2 generations, and III has a story to tell from the perspective of several different characters. I like those games and find them very well done.

I recall playing the first two Legend games for Game Boy and enjoying them even though they didn't feel like Final Fantasy (at the time, it was in no way clear that they were actually not the same spiritual series). I honestly can't say that I recall much about them other than liking that I could make my characters monsters or robots, and I definitely have never picked up another SaGa since.

Cool! 2 and 3 are definitely on the list.
Seems an obvious choice of series for CoN members to check out.

A friend of mine brought FFL1 to school.

I remember it had glass swords.

And a very nice battle theme.

As a matter of fact:I really like the ff legends/Saga series for game boy/DS.

I think the design and skill tree is fantastic, as it makes monsters not evil just because they are monsters, and you can actually play as a monster.

I think going through monster forms is very creative as well. Its just that the second game made monsters feel kinda weaker, especially the ds version.I think they could have added more monsters for variation as the game boy version seemed to have more variation. The ds version is extremely straight forward:Go to new area, and get new monsters, and move to next area for slightly stronger monsters. In the game boy Version, the were more than 3 monsters per area, and in the original ff legends game, there are even more.Magic is also underpowered in the ds version which is saga 2.Bosses are almost always immune to all elemental damage, so either you use non elemental spells, or you use physical attacks.

I also love that you had robot player choice too.

Another thing I really like:Villages are full of humans mutants and robots, so you can actually talk to monsters and get opinions. To me:This seems like an underrated game, and an underrated idea.

Welp, I finally finished Romancing SaGa. I enjoyed it somewhat, RPGs from this era are kinda my jam. It's nice to zone out when slugging my way through a dungeon, listening to a podcast or something.

All my criticisms still stand however. I'm not sure if battles can move you beyond earlier quests, or whether finishing quests advances some sort of time system; this much is still unclear.

Generally the battles are the same level as your character, similarly to Bethesda games, with the exception of bosses which seem static; so mostly they'll flatten you, or you'll get to them over levelled and one-shot them.

Ah well, the last area and ending were epic enough, some awesome pixel/sprite art and boss death animation that truly rivals the earlier SNES FF's.

For anyone looking to try out the first Romancing SaGa, I'd say do not start out with the following characters as their intro stories are short/bad/non-existent:

Gray, Aisha, Barbara, Jamil.
Aisha has an okay(ish) story but it's really tough starting as her.

I retract my statement.I thought for some reason you were also talking about ff legends series, which is also saga on ds.

As I understand it, they all fall under the SaGa umbrella. However Romancing SaGa is to be differentiated from FF Legends (just SaGa in asia)

The first thing and I quote:Anyone a fan of th series? Saga and final fantasy legends.I was confused because you didn't put in romancing saga as a starter. There are many sagas, and romancing saga is not to be confused with legends, as they are unrelated.

No need to be rude, I was just confused.I heard about newer games to the series but I couldn't remember where I had heard or what games.

I remember seeing a lack of monsters, which is highly disappointing.
