The puertorican govermemnt is in crisis, in it's 500 year history Puerto Rico has never been like it is right now.
For many years, Puerto Rico has been in debt much like the USA. In order to cover all of the goverment expenses the goverment has to take out a loan, and in order for that loan to be aproved we need 26 votes in favor of taking out the loan, and only 18 members of the Chamber of Representatives have aproved. If by Sunday the loan isn' tproved, %85 of the goverment has to shutdown, which means, 205,000 people will have no jobs!! On Friday April 29, a massive protest will take place in front of Puerto Rico's Capitol Building, the event has been given the name "Grito de Union Nacional". The purpose of this protest is to demand action from our "leaders", who for the pst 2 years have been in conflict for many reasons, mostly political bullshit that we all know about. The people are tired of all the non sense that has been unfolding now for the past few years, and now the time has come for the masses to rise up against our govermemnt and demand action, to put aside the differences and get to work, before it's too late. Yesterday the governor of PR, Anibal Acevedo Vila, confirmed that at least 70 goverment agencies will shutdown. All the money destined to this agencies have been transfered to the Police and Hospitals. Also, Municipal Funds from all 78 PR cities have been transfered to the Police and Hospitals as well, this mens that no city in PR has money at the moment, we are stuck. Well, there are many more things I can talk about the current situation of PR, but I don't wanna bore you guys, anyone interesting in discussing this please do so, and please, even if you know nothing about the island, please have our small island in your prayers. Thank You -------------------- PS3 tag: TipoDLuffy "...quite possibly the greatest game ever made" |

I went on vacation there in 7th grade and visited Old San Juan, the Rainforest place with a gigantic 90 ft waterfall, and the giant laser satellite that they filmed GoldenEye at. It was awesome there!
It's sad how things are there right now. There are two halfs of Puerto Rico though. The tourist sector, and the slums. And the slums were very bad from what I remember. -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

What part of the island are you from Saffire?
I had no idea about all of this debt stuff. My fiance and her family live in Mayaguez, and she hasn't mentioned that stuff to me at all. That stuff's rough. -------------------- Oh sure, I don't have to get kicked in the junk to activate it, but I like it anyway. -- Thief commenting on the difference between Throw and Blue Magic. |

Well, didn't the American's put Puerto Rico in that position in the first place? You know, with the slave labour the people were forced into, and abandoning the economy they created when it wasn't profitable enough anymore... Maybe the American Government should step up and rectify the problem they started.

Well, hopefully the american government will help the gov't pick up slack. In the meantime, its probably going to be pretty rough. If Puerto Rico was to become a legitimate state, it would place last in economy, schools, and social welfare. I think the US gov't has a big responsibility to the island.

On a Lighter note though IMO "Contact" Sucked lol The whole movie builds up to this Climax-like point, and then the conclusion was totally disappointing (IMO). Cool telescope though -------------------- Quote <FrPhoenix[Around]> "Burgleburgleburgle" |

Sorry about the double post R51, is just I can't find the darn delete button, anyway, well hell yeah, Ms. Clinton to the rescue!!, but unfourtunately statehood is something the people of the island will never vote for, unless of course we are only given two options, Independence or Statehood. If the PR people are not given the option of US Commonwealth, I'm pretty sure Statehood will be the only option for many, unless of course the same thing that happened in 1998 happens again, when the "NONE OF THE ABOVE" option was the option that won the status elections.
I agree about Contact, it developes pretty cool, but at the end well blah!! -------------------- PS3 tag: TipoDLuffy "...quite possibly the greatest game ever made" |

So this topic is ten years old, but Puerto Rico is in just as bad, if not worse, of a mess now as it was then. I wonder if attitudes have changed at all as to how they should work with the United States?

Is this your way of doing that 2006/2016 comparison thing everyone is doing?
I appreciate you bringing this back to light, though, since I never knew anything about the issues plaguing Puerto Rico. Now, of course, we could look to the internet for answers, but getting it directly from a source in the actual country would be best, no? What's the word, Saffire? Thank You This sadly is the reason why the States would never approve a Socialist Republic in becoming the 51st state. Not only would it give Democrats an edge but because of public policy within the state it would never get approval. A state is supposed to give to the commonwealth rather then take. There is even talk about California itself voting it self as a Federal Terroritory to relieve its debt but if that ever happened the Democrats would not be able to win a Presidental election again. As the Democratic Party is more costal and bubbled into small regions where god forbid if a earth quake hit or major natural disaster the party would be done for. Honestly I would rather Puerto Rico leave the commonwealth of the United States and figure out its own problems but due to blue Democratic Party pressure I doubt that's going to happen because again they need Puerto Rico in case California decides to become a federal Territory and try to use the mainstream media to convince Red States into admitting Puerto Rico which I don't see unless of course Puerto Rico has a major natural disaster. As Obama's former chief of staff and current mayor of Chicago once said "You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before." - Rahm Emanuel (Video gamers prob know the GTAIV nude shower scene inspired by him since he is known to verbally attack oppentants naked well they take showers as well as sending dead fish to his enemies) -------------------- His Divine Shadow |
