Would it be considered essential to play CC before CT?

Never hear much about CC on this site thought I would get your guys' thoughts!

As someone who has never played Chrono Cross, and likely won't ever get around to it, I would say it's not at all essential to play CC before CT. biggrin.gif

Chrono Cross is meant to be a (none-too-direct) sequel to Chrono Trigger. Why would one wish to play CC before CT?

My mistake I thought it was the other way around!

Good to hear though now I don't have to worry about it smile.gif

I was confused too. I thought it was made after, but was made to be a prequel. I guess I was wrong.

It's isn't essential because you didn't know about it. It's known as plausible deniability. Though if you learn about both of them and want to know which to play first it depends.

I didn't know Chrono Chross is suppose to be a prequel to Chrono Trigger. That's what I'm hearing. I played both and preferred Chrono Trigger more. I'd play that one first because it was published in real time first.

It's not essential to play one over the other unless you don't have experience in combat systems. In fact I played Final Fantasy VI before Final Fantasy I.

That's probably a bit different, because other than some major themes and concepts that carry over, the stories of FFI and FFVI are completely separate. I say "probably" because I don't know how closely-related Cross is to Trigger, since I've only played Chrono Trigger. But I think you're right. Because Chrono Trigger was released several years before, you clearly don't need to play Cross before you play it.

Also, as I was trying to find out whether it's a sequel or prequel on Wikipedia, trying to avoid spoilers, I saw that it has 45 characters.

45 characters!? Wow.

That makes sense!

Think I will stick with CT first since it was made first - despite CC being the "prequel"!

Hell I played FFVII - then FFX - then waited 15 years to play FFVI!

I'm fairly sure Chrono Cross is a sequel. For one:

Kid (who was born around 1004 AD) was adopted by Lucca which never happened during the course of the game and, of course, the present in Chrono Trigger is 1000 AD.

Yeah, I was going to ask...where did this talk about Cross being a prequel come from? How does that even make sense, based on what I understand to be the plot?

I haven't played the game, so I wouldn't know. But the Wikipedia page is vague about the game. It calls it a "successor" to Chrono Trigger. It says nothing about the story coming before or after.

I thought it was that

after the events of CT, Chronopolis was founded as a result
. Also

Lucca dies in CC
. So those two things alone would make CC a sequel.

All related to the point I'm making. Like almost everything you must struggle with it. No matter the setting it is designed challenging enough and fun enough to play. At least to the standards of games at the time. It has struggles. cool.gif

This might have to do with being a male but I figure out the combat system first and who my enemies are. I can always figure out the story later/at the same time. eh.gif
