Dungeons and Dragons vs. Final Fantasy

If my math is correct, FF came out slightly after Dn'd made its first edition, which was actually NOT called first edition, that came later. Anyways, I have pondered whether Final Fantasy was based off Dungeons and Dragons. This isn't saying that I have anything against FF or Dn'd. I love both, but there may be a connection between the two.

Update! I have done some research, and it appears that Final Fantasy took more inspiration from video games. However, I still think that there is still a link between Final Fantasy and Dungeons and Dragons.

Update! Honestly, I'm finding more and more similarities between ff and dn'd. Take the classes of ff1. The thief is the rouge. the warrior is the fighter. the monk is the monk. the wizard, sorcerer, and warlock is the black mage. the cleric is the white mage. The red mage I can't figure out. A bard, mabye? Otherwise I would Just call it a Erdlich knight.

I'm pretty sure FF took inspiration from D&D; it's only a question of how direct that inspiration was.

By the way, what D&D now calls the Rogue, was actually known as Thief back in 1e.

Also, original FF1 and FF3 have spell slots, which are still a D&D feature (though exactly how they work depends on the class). In the FF games this was later changed into the MP system.

And some D&D monsters are in FF1, such as mindflayers and beholders.

Meanwhile, if you're looking to learn about the evolution of JRPGs, you may want to look into Wizardry. It's a western series of dungeon crawler games that takes after D&D even more directly, and has in turn influenced countless JRPGs directly or indirectly because of its intense popularity in Japan.

Thank you for that info. I have also noticed what you have said. My conclusion: FF, at least, FF1 and 3, took inspiration from Dn'd, but eventually branched off.

Since when does fiction have to be scientifically accurate? Lets be our own Judge and remind each other the real reason we game.

-The Adventure. New or old according to you I doubt you've experienced that exact same moment before. I could be wrong but don't expect me to pour all of my imagination into it. You have your own too.

Sakaguchi and Gygax.

I believe dungeons and dragons was first released in 1974, among the first creators was, in fact, Gary Gygax. Hironobu Sakaguchi did use the famous game as inspiration when he released Final Fantasy in 1987 in an effort to save Square Soft (Rad Racer wasn't that bad a game, imo).

I think he also drew inspiration from Wizardry and the Ultima series, which were extremely popular back then. He might have also seen some inspiration from the future partners, Enix's Dragon Quest.

Ever wonder what it would have been like if Sakaguchi, Gygax, Richard Garriott, and Robert Woodhead would have ever met back in that day? Heck, throw in Yuji Horii.

I'd love to hear what would be said.
