I fear that ff6 by 2020, if no remake comes out due to the amount of new age jaded kids these days, that ff6 will fizzle out of existence, and possibly even ff9 and ff5.

Even if ff6 is popular amongst old elite gamers, more are interested in destiny and other games with high end graphics. If ff7 hadn't so many sequels and movies, the game would have been in the danger zone. Some people already hate on ff7 illogically based on graphics alone, which as you know, doesn't make a game.

Should ff6 get. Complete graphical rework? What about the far less popular, yet still beloved ff9? What about ff5?

Are any of you concerned about this?

I think what you're describing is common to pretty much every sort of media or entertainment ever devised. You could make the same statement about Beowulf or Canterbury Tales, about daguerreotypes, about serialized radio shows, comic books, swing music, or those crazy little stereoscopic Viewmaster discs.

The common thread about those and Final Fantasy (or any other video game) is that we still, even today, know that all those things existed and can access them. Not everyone wants to, the same way that some people want to play Destiny and not Final Fantasy V - that's a given. But, if we can keep a cultural touchstone like an epic poem alive for a thousand years, why can't we do the same with a video game? Video games have one thing going for them that previous media do not: virtually every video game ever made exists in physical form or in the memory of a person who has been alive during the internet era. We have an infinite capacity for institutional memory now, and while your original Final Fantasy III SNES cartridge might need a new battery, even if it's not playable you can find a means to play it if that's what you're into. There's no reason to think that the games you love can't survive in some fashion in any scenario save the end of civilization as we know it.

Does this mean that a game like Final Fantasy IX will ever reach the height of popularity that it had fifteen years ago? Probably not. I can't imagine that even the Final Fantasy VII remake will ship as many copies as the original has, because as you imply, some of the fanbase will have permanently moved on. But these things happen! Who goes out and plays Pong regularly now? Who beyond speedrunners or people with genuine interest in gaming history play E.T. or Super Mario Bros. 1? It's not the end of the world, and you can hate on the youth all you want for not giving proper respect to the things you care about, but it's just the way new generations work and have forever. Gnashing teeth about it doesn't change the facts.

So, to sum up: no, I'm not concerned. I am confident that the games I care about will continue to exist in some form for longer than I'm interested in playing them. Do I think that all the games you mentioned could benefit from the new FF7 treatment? Sure, but I'm not freaking out about whether I get them or not. The originals are still just fine even if they don't have lines out the doors of game shops of people wanting to buy them.

I still think for an example, that games could use a slight boost, but at the same time:New games are more needed than old remakes.Still:Reboots could spark interest in ff6 and ff5, and it never hurts.I personally wish square enix would bring out a pack of games series like:Get ff7 crisis core, dirge of Cerberus for ps4 as a pack, or:You could purchase dissidia one and dissidia 2 on psn network.I personally am not a fan of hand held consoles.

On top of that:You get better internet reception , instead of the hand held thing, and less worry about the batteries.

And ranger 51:M and psycho are old, so should we forget them? I say no.Movies do tend to work different from games. You have the division of people obsessed with special effect movies, and people who watch good movies, and besides:You find lots of reviewers put care.

In the gamer industry, there is more push for graphics and showing it off, thus fueling the jaded crowds interest in only graphics.Ranger you know what I say is true, because you are at least 25+, possibly 30+ by now.

Ff5 anyways is one of the least cared about games, along with ff2 and 3 on nes.

What worries me, is that square enix and their brilliant plans will somehow ruin all the series.Since after X came out even ff7 fans weren't totally happy about the sequels.Dirge of Cerberus is a hit and miss, some love crisis core, others hate it, and square enix kind of did it to themselves, so for fear of ruining, I am afraid of what they Will do with ff6.Android version really disappointed me, and I wasn't happy with the way they took liberties in dissidia and changing the characters to their stereotypes:Cloud emo, squall a jerk,.

So, you want Square Enix to be working on remakes but also be working on new games. OK, fair enough, that seems to be largely what they do - it just seems like maybe your complaint is that you're not getting the remakes you want where you want them? Hard to really extrapolate that personal issue to all of gaming.

I don't think anyone would say no to that. I certainly didn't. However, I also don't think that movies are all that different than video games beyond the fact that movies have been around longer. Neither of us can predict what is going to happen in the future, but I still don't see any reason to think that any Final Fantasy game is going to simply disappear forever. The fact that you've seen the movies you mention only reinforces the point I've been trying to make here: just like old movies, old video games are still available to people if they want to seek them out. How did you know that Psycho, a movie made at least thirty years before you were born, was something you wanted to see? You more than likely heard from a friend, a family member, or the internet that it was good. How is that different than how you get exposed to a video game that you've never tried?

You bringing up Psycho is an interesting point. Did you ever watch any of the sequels? The remake made in the 90s? They're not good. But those don't stop people from seeking out the original. What if the remake that you so desperately want is bad? Does that help people remember the games, or not? Will a bad remake cause the original game to disappear into obscurity? Again, I doubt it. You say later that you didn't like the mobile version of FF6, but does it mean that you started to like the SNES version less? Once again, I doubt it. smile.gif

I'm 35, in fact, as I type this. I still play games, and I certainly appreciate today's graphics. I know a lot of gamers and work with people who make games. But I still don't know why you keep saying these things about jaded gamers. I don't see what you see. Maybe you just hang out with the wrong kinds of gamers? smile.gif I know I've said this to you in other threads, but I just don't care about the kinds of people you see posting on Youtube or Gamefaqs or whatever. Their opinions mean nothing to me, and they're not going to stop JRPGs from happening.

I get that it worries you. It doesn't worry me. If it turns into a series you no longer want to play, that's a shame for you. But that's all it is. Gaming is a personal thing, and a ton of people are going to want to play a new Final Fantasy game even if it's different than the Final Fantasy you want to play, and that's okay, and it in no way indicates that the older games will simply cease to exist.

I never saw the sequel, and I was exposed by my parents to the movie.I am not against graphics or cgi, as long as they are used to enhance the game.

The reason I say some gamers are jaded, is because of the falacious idea that games age, and graphics make a game.I have seen some people on youtube worried about graphics, and some fighting over which console is best based on graphics alone.I have even seen some trash ff7, based on graphics.Ff7 came out in 1997, when 3D was relatively new, and that is precisely why games like ff8 and ff9 are noticeably better. In fact:When I heard about ff7 remake from the alpha omega sin video on YouTube and him talking about ff6 possibly as getting a remake based on what was said by th people in SE, it made me happy that not all people are fanatics who stay in one niche game and hate the others"

The reason I also think a remake is good for ff6, is because it can respark interest in the game in terms of gameplay, where ff6 has had the same stuff.New bonus dungeons, new stuff is always nice in games, and new stuff in ff7 if they add it will be nice as well.

Maybe even people will shut up about the Popeye the sailor arm thing from the original game.

I'm not sure where I stand here.

I think the FF7 remake is a great idea. So much so that I thought going back and remaking FFVIII at the same time/shortly after would be a great idea...

But I started playing through FFVIII again recently and I still love that game. It doesn't need a remake. FFVII, does. That really says something, IMO.

However, I F#CKING HATED the remake of the original FFIII.

I even went out and bought a DS just so I could get it, as FFIII stands as a personal favorite of mine.

However, the DS remake was junk. I hated the orchestrated soundtrack, I hated the graphics and I pretty much got rid of it and went back and played the horribly translated ROM I'd played originally.

The remake stripped the game completely of it's charm. And what a wonderfully charming game FFIII is. It has one of the best soundtracks in the series, too, IMO and I love the 8-bit version.

I don't care about exposing the game to a younger crowd that never got to play it. Is it really worth it to remake a game just so young'ins can play it? If they really need to play it, they can do it how I did and download a horribly translated ROM and play the game for what it is.

Everything about the original NES version is superior, IMO. The monster design, character design, job system, battle system, and graphics and soundtrack.

Maybe its me getting older (I just turned 30! lol) but I think in some cases, a remake ruins what made an original so great.

P.S. They are remaking Big Trouble in Little China with THE ROCK. IS ANYONE EXCITED ABOUT THAT? Didn't think so.

I'm inclined to agree with R51 here, but it's worth noting that I'm a teenager and I don't play ANY new games. If Square makes nothing but rubbish for ten years, I don't care. It doesn't make the older games any less good; in fact, it doesn't affect them at all. And the games' popularity has no effect on me; if they fade, that just means they're cheaper at the GameXchange. tongue.gif At any rate, they'll never be impossible to find; as long as the internet stands, we can always find roms, so we have nothing to fear there. And whatever my generation thinks or doesn't think about the classics has no effect on the classics themselves.

That's nostalgia speaking.Chrono trigger remake was pretty decent, as well as ff4 on the ds.You have to also admit:The fixing of the usefulness of other characters was nice too.Now you can play as Edward at endgame and get nice stuff for him to beat the final boss, and he is way useful with the optional dungeon gear, as is cid.

I actually liked ff1 on the Gba too, as it added more stuff to make the game more desireable.

As for you raven:Just cause your young, doesn't invalidate, so speak up.That is:As long as you played most games.A lot of people played x-2,XII, and XIII-2, so it would be accurate to say I don't have a perfect idea if the later games are good.I mostly skipped The online games and XII, because after playing x, I was burned out with ff series in general.

As for why I call some kids jaded:I am seeing a lot of young kids who think that graphics make the game instead of story. Some of these are those call of duty kids, others only play new games only. Its true also that I am seeing plenty whom if you asked if they would play a 2d game, they would Trash it.

Also:There is only so many times you can play ff1-13 before losing interest due to having done everything, and adding new content adds stuff to do.

Just wanted to comment on "nostalgia value".

I don't think nostalgia value is just that -- it might be more than that.

I first watched Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within back in 2005. I really enjoyed the movie. Yeah, I know it was generally panned and lost a lot of money. Didn't affect my enjoyment. I felt a sense of great awe.

After a while I did forget what happened in the story, though. So I couldn't say why I enjoyed it so much.

So, recently, I decided to sit down and watch it again. Maybe it wouldn't hold up. Maybe now that I'd wandered around on TV Tropes for some time everything would be ruined. Or maybe now that I'm older something would have changed. The good thing was that I could test this since I actually could barely remember anything about the story.

I watched it again. And that sense of awe?

...it filled me again.

Also, I've got me some of those View-Master discs.
