Forever Rachel got here by knocking out the only FF15 song to not win in the first round, Apocalyptis Noctis. Cid's Theme got here by drinking its @$&*@& tea. And by beating The Oath from FF8.
Forever Rachel encapsulates the hollowness of loneliness with its opening phrases, and builds them into a more thorough expression of grief and loss. It is very much the opposite of the impression that Locke wishes to give of himself, and the theme that accompanies that bravado, fleshing the character out significantly in flashback. This song held its own in 2010, winning a pair of matchups before falling to Terra's Theme. In a very different vein, Cid's Theme is a bold and confident character theme with a lot of fanfare-style horns, appropriate for the man himself. You'll hear it for the first time when he cusses you out for trying to borrow the Tiny Bronco, if you're so inclined. |

Two strong tracks! But I'm forced to choose.
Given this choice, my vote goes to Forever Rachel. The loop in this track is handled brilliantly: * intro: starts in E minor, sequences through some keys then lands on a D major chord. * main section: starts in G minor (D major chord is dominant of G minor, so this feels very natural). Two phrases, one which ends on a dominant chord, and one which ends on a tonic chord, but with a "Picardy third" -- i.e., instead of a G minor tonic chord, it's a G major chord. Now that we're back and settled in G major, we can transition smoothly into a secondary subject in E minor...or, the intro itself. Cid's Theme tries to transition similarly, but the intro itself is actually the main melody. It's not "transitional" material leading into the main theme, but rather it's the main theme itself; you're supposed to land on it. This, plus the big leap downward in the melody, gives the feeling of regressing after building up, resulting in a loop that's less smooth. This is tough, as both tracks have alot of impact, but Cid's Theme just speaks so strong to his character and life choices. The song just hits you with his pride and broken dreams. It's rough.
