Was it revealed who the spy was?

I'm in the part of the story where you are going to the Sealed Gate, and I realized something, how could the empire know two of the party's plans. The first one was their assault in the Magitek Facility. How could have they known that Celes was planning to go to Vector? OK, this is explainable though. Terra going out of control might have caught the attention of the empire and opted to track/stalk the group with spies instead, after their defeat at Narshe. That's how the empire might have known that Celes and the group contacted Setzer, and piecing two and two together, might have guessed they wanted to go to the continent where Vector is located. But what about going to the Sealed Gate to contact the Espers. I thought it was supposed to be a top secret mission. Heck the base guarding the entrance was suddenly abandoned. Who could have been the spy that told the empire of their plans? Could it be they have just anticipated that they will contact the Espers because the group tried to rescue the Espers in the facility?

It wouldn't be farfetched that someone in that abandoned base was playing dirty and made the spying, especially after someone in the empire saw Esper Terra rampaging. With a new strange creature sighted, they probably guessed the Sealed Cave would be the next spot to be touched by the Returners especially that it also housed even more strange creatures.

Consider in the abandoned base, there is also a locked room by the time you enter it. It could be that the locked room was locked from the inside, and upon sensing that the party entered the base and then left in the direction of the cave, unlocked the door and slowly snuck behind their tail.

Remember that this also the same party which probably didn't bat an eye to a less stealthier, sneaking Relm.

It may have been a spy, and it may have simply been Emperor Gestahl knowing his enemy. Kefka had, by now, told him of the fact that magicite grants far more magical power than the extraction process they'd been using. He was probably hoping that after taking on the Magitek Facility, the Returners would be emboldened by their small victories and attempt an all-out attack.

Gestahl probably plays a good deal of chess. In fact, Kefka and Gestahl may have a weekly chess game...just cuz Kefkas insane doesn't mean he can't play chess...

I doubt Gestahl relies blindingly on Kefka all the time. He's got General Leo on hand by the time you play the game, and he's proven to be much better. But, I think Gestahl by the time the empire was nearly wiped out, suddenly decided to make a bet... and threw away General Leo's life, and if Gestahl responded pretty well that day, he would throw away Kefka too. If anything, I think Gestahl's chess opponent could be Leo...

If you look at other situations, Kefka is merely there, and he has barely an intimidating presence besides his reputation. All he does is RANT RANT RANT. Of note is when he complains about how Figaro is in the middle of a stinking desert. He probably was sent there because Kefka's usefulness to Gestahl is just low.

Oh wait...

I choose to agree with Spooniest, here.

It's a crazy gamble if that's the case, but I love the idea nonetheless.

I just re-watched the scene and it seems that this is what happened. You got to remember that Gestahl knew better than anyone Terra's history. After the incident at the research facility he and Kefka knew that they had to get into the Esper World, and only she could do it. The Returners really didn't have any choice, and Gestahl knew that. It was clearly a trap. They must've also discovered that Celes had joined them after her escape, and assumed she would've led them to the Magitek Research Facility.
