So yes, Simple. I'd go with 8.

I've played with most of the combinations, but my most popular is definitely a fighter through and through. I like to have him in the forefront since he's in nearly all of my battles, and it seems right to have him wielding a sword and lopping off heads. It's the same with most of the NPCs (if I use them) - it just doesn't seem right to turn them into a magic-user that I'll even turn them into a Geomancer just so they can use a sword.

Posted by: laszlow 11th December 2008 22:17
My Ramza is almost always a Draw Out / mage setup. Squire class, equipment to increase MA, Draw Out as a secondary, Magic Attack Up as a support, MP Switch as a Reaction (usually), and either Move +3 or Move MP-Up as a movement. Faith is around 15, Brave is at 97.

With something like that you have high damage that can't be blocked and isn't dependent on Faith, plus very high survivability. Scream makes everything too easy. I usually use this kind of setup with a magic class like the Wizard, but with Ramza you have better equipment selection and usually better stats in general.

Posted by: Asylum Outpatient 11th December 2008 22:34
My Ramza always ends up being painfully unoriginal. Almost always Lancer with Geomancer or Guts as secondary. Boring, I know. sleep.gif If I'm feeling froggish, I might assign him Punch Art instead.

I'm a little more adventurous with my generics.

Posted by: Fistrules 11th December 2008 23:52
My Ramza is always with Martial Arts thumbup.gif because of his insane Brave points, Ramza makes an swesome Monk. Course he alsop kick butt as a ninja and samurai

Posted by: Matsuo 12th December 2008 12:22
I always end up giving Ramza a class that will maximise his HP - it makes those occasional solo story battles managable. Currently I have Ramza as a Samurai/Squire with dual swords. (He's a killing machine)

also, in other news: my first post biggrin.gif

Posted by: BuzbySlimsEsquire 13th December 2008 07:12
Yes, it's true... I like to keep Ramza a master squire with monk secondary. He has more squire moves than the generics, of course... throughout the game I use him to raise everyone's brave up to 97. And with the monk set he can revive, purify, chakra...

Posted by: Lune knight 19th December 2008 23:15
i normally work him up as a lancer and monk, then by end game i turn him into a squire with two swords ability and punch arts

Posted by: ILoveMoombas! 22nd December 2008 00:39
I have him as a squire duel wielding a chaos blade and an excalabur. I just throw on item or elemental for a secondary skill.

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 23rd December 2008 00:51
I usually like to keep him as a Squire becuase of his equipment, stats, and Mettle/Guts abilities. I like Laszlow's idea of Draw Out, but I usually give him Math Skill, becuase the right algorithms and calculations can be highly detrimental to the enemies and very beneficial to himself and allies. I find more success with that than other set-ups.

Dual-Weild can be very helpful, but I generally give him Magic Defend Up or Magic Attack along with Move HP-Up and Blade Grasp.

Posted by: Mr.Vercetti 24th December 2008 15:37
I think that if i would make Ramza as Dancer (lol), i'd did. Ramza is perfect with his begininning 70/70 for Every job you want do with him.

In PSP Version i made him a Perfect Onion Knight and a Dark Knight Master, so i can hit 999 hit points always.

In PSX Version, which i prefer, i usually made him first of all Ninja/Monk, a Shaolin Version of Ramza, who can Kill You with 2 punches. I don't like putting him as a knight in the late part of the game, infact, after Chapter 3, You can equip him with the same Knight stuffs as a Generic usually have with Knight Job. I like a lot even the Black Mage System. Black Magic + Draw Out owns everything.

Posted by: yelanates 24th December 2008 16:20
I've done it all. He makes a very good Mage because of his high Faith. Truth be told, by the end game I usually switch him back to uberSquire because it's on par with the other special characters.

In the PSP version, I spend most of the game getting him to Dark Knight.

Posted by: soham_rej 27th December 2008 06:56
I like playing Ramza as a Dark mage (with Bolt3!) with the chemist's ability to throw items).

Posted by: Kerahl 1st January 2009 21:30
Master Dark Knight that has been level tricked and Blade Grasp with 97 brave.

Then maybe a Chaos Blade or two.

Posted by: AngelWitch666 6th January 2009 05:55
Since Ramza always appears in all of my battles, I toughen him up by mastering Squire & Monk. Afterwards, I keep him as monk.

Here's how I like setting him up as:

Sub Command: Guts (useful skills for increasing Brave/speed/attack or heal a friend well if Chakra's useless
Reaction Ability: Counter
Support Ability: Equip Armor (a must for max HP)
Field Ability:: Move-HP Up

So, in conclusion, Ramza is my powertank.

I constantly use Accumulate/Cheer Up/Yell/Scream to improve his stats (his Brave stays at 97 after battles so don't even try physically attacking him), Wave Fist/Earth Slash for far-away enemies, and Chakra/Stigma Magic/Wish/Heal for recovering purposes.

With his equipment, I toss in the best kind of helmets & armor that I get him, and either switch between Bracer or some other accessory that makes him immune to a bad status from an incoming boss fight.

Ramza is an awesome character in my party. Whenever I get Orlandu, I steal his Excalibur (because of "Haste") and any other useful equipment to equip them ti Agrias, then boot Orlandu off of my team.

Never really enjoyed making the main characters magicians tbqh.

I'm still on my first playthrough on this game, but so far I've been using him as a monk with dual wield or something else with brawler. I like to have Martial Arts or Mettle as my second ability.

Posted by: Max 22nd January 2009 21:30
I used him as a Squire/Thief. Stealing is so important.

Posted by: Suikojin 13th February 2009 01:58
Number 8 for me as well.

I've played all those configurations. I usually just stick to him using brute force though. And of course at the end of the game I have him as a Squire. I just like him like he started, and I love Ultima.

Posted by: Amethyst 18th February 2009 19:11
Although I've tried many, many combinations and loved them all, my favorite is to have Ramza as a squire.

The Secondary is usually up for grabs, usually Item I guess. Although lately, I'm experimenting with Time Magic.
Reaction would be Blade Grasp. Gotta dodge all those frontal attacks because he's in the front lines.
Support is Two Swords for massive damage.
Field as Teleport. Go anywhere you want. Sucks when it fails when you only want to move three spaces...

Yeah...

Posted by: Shotgunnova 22nd February 2009 10:59
I typically play him as a two-sword samurai, leaving the mage classes for later if/when they're learned. It probably ends up being something like:

Chirijiraden
Chirijiraden
Grand Helmet
Maximillian
Feather Mantle

Draw Out
Battle Skill
Sunken State
Two Swords
Teleport

I have Ramza as a squire with 2 rune blades, flash hat, light robe, and i stole the +2 Physical Attack +2 Magic attack gauntlet from elmdor. He's powerful with magic but deals about 180 damage with each hand, and since the rune blades give +2 MA its a pretty good combo.

Posted by: Kane 5th May 2009 03:45
I've played through the game enough times to have tried all of these variants with Brute Force killer and Squire/Draw Out Abuser being most common.

Posted by: R8.50 Mango 25th June 2009 14:12
Has anyone else noticed that cadet Ramza looks a lot like Marche from tactics advance?Ive started way too many new games its probably knocked off a couple years off me life. Each one I start I have Ramza go a different direction which (Strangely enogh) ends up getting him killed whenever I choose A Mage Role...

Posted by: Sam 31st July 2009 06:56
I make him a knight, and give him white magic,so he's kinda like a generic paladin.Although every now and then,i make him a lancer

Posted by: Eric 5th August 2009 04:06
See my sig. The equiptment has changed over the years, but he has never really changed. I did try to use Darkness as a second once, but I ended up not liking it much, so I went back to Guts. As for Brave and Faith, I keep them both maxed toward the end of the game, when the better equiptment cand be used to protect from offencive magic. Max Brave helps Counter, max Faith lets my White Mage do her job to the fullest.

I master the Monk/Squire skillset asap, and my skills look something like;

- Guts
- Punch Art
- Blade Grasp/Auto Potion for story fights.
- I'd put Two Swords here, but I'm in love with the Aegis Shield, so I might put something nifty instead.
- Move + 3

Excalibur is a really nice sword for Ramza because of it's haste.
Screaming/Yelling is fun, too. :]

HI FOLKS!!!

I just bought ff tactics for the playstation.

I got a old cd and started playing.

So far i have ramza as a squire which is his default class but i will eventually change it if needed.

Posted by: NinjaRageBeam 15th May 2010 06:45
I've beaten this classic so many times.
I've tried all of the above jobs.
[might and magic is really smart]
try to get a ninja early with black magic[Ice 3, Fire 3, Climb-hazard, Cherry Blossom, All-Ultima is the Sh*#^%$T]

if you know how to change the sprites___do it!!! you'll enjoy the game more
[ex.Ninja ajniNuser posted image Assassin, Death Knight, Nightblade, Ark Knight] how cool is that biggrin.gif

My new playthrough is a squire/lancer with counter flood, magic up, and teleport. Magic up might seem odd, but I did the level/delevel method, and my magic power is way down compared to my physical. Since geomancy works off of PA and MA, this raises the damage significantly.

Posted by: legendary Soldier 4th June 2010 01:31
when i played it his class kept changing cause i couldnt decide but i favored dragoons samurai and ninja

Posted by: Starsoul-klr 14th August 2010 16:38
Wow, this is still here?

Anywho what I like about Ramza is that he's just set up to have good stats that he can jump to another job and for the most part excel at it.

Also finally got to take the Dark Knight Class for a spin. Powerful but not my favorite.

Posted by: trismegistus 14th August 2010 17:10
Typically I'll go physical with Ramza...maybe a Squire with 2 Swords, Ignore Height, Concentration, and Dragon Spirit or HP Restore.

Posted by: GamblingCat 14th August 2010 19:28
just basic squire that i have added abilities from other classes to suit my needs when i play.

Posted by: spmags 4th September 2010 22:28
I play Ramza in the classic PS1 version as a physical attacker for the most part.

Right now he is a Samurai
Secondary: Guts
Auto-Potion
Eqiup Spear
Jump +2

Hope to make him a bard eventually and give him fly. Equip spear is for
Javelin II
Genji Helm
Genji Chest
Germianas Boots

I generally roll with a party of 4 Offensive players and 1 Defensive player...but the defensive player is pretty solid. Mustadio as a Bard with Item as secondary throw Item, Auto-Potion, and Move Find Item since I just started my progress into the Deep Dungeon. Agrias, Beowolf, Cloud (level 12..just started working on him). I sub Orlandu in for Cloud on tough battles.

Posted by: Bahemoth ZERO 2nd November 2010 04:41
In chapter 1 i played him as a Knight
In chapter 2 and 3 as a Monk and mastered that class
In chapter 4 he mastered Ninja class and I changed him to a Knight with-
Battle Skill
Martial Arts
Auto-Potion
Two Swords
Move-2

And here are the Equipments on him-
Excalibur
Ragnarok
Crystal Helmet
Reflect Mail
Feather Mantle

I tend to broaden his job tree quiet a bit and do everything before settling back to Knight with two swords ability. Makes him pretty unstoppable. Pair it with Counter, and make him as strong as possible and he's a beast. I usually have some white magic as back up. *Cure 3, Esuna, and Raise, just in case my healer is incapacitated*

Posted by: CatFood 11th March 2011 17:04
Ramza
Dark Knight Level 99
97 Brave 84 Faith

Equipment:
Chaos Blade (for Regen)
Excalibur (for Haste)
Grand Helm
Lordly Robe (for Protect and Shell)
Angel Ring (for Reraise)
And we have Ramza with permanent MBarrier/Aegis.

Skills:
Darkness (Dark Sword)
Mettle (Guts)
Shirahadori (Blade Grasp)
Dual Wield (Two Swords)
Teleport

I usually have Ramza as a combination Fighter/Mage, to take advantage of his high Brave and Faith. Usually I'll leave his Faith at base and max out his Brave whenever possible.

My usual set-up is:
Job: Squire
Action: White Magic/Time Magic
Reaction: Abandon
Support: Half of MP
Move: Move +3

Weapon: Rune Blade
Shield: Aegis Shield
Head: Thief Hat
Body: Robe of Lords
Accessory: Feather Mantle

I generally don't give Ramza the most powerful of my equipment since he can easily boost himself to well-above other characters' stats and power with Scream. Abandon + Feather Mantle/Aegis Shield makes him almost-invulnerable [100% evade against magic attacks, over 80% for physical], while his Guts and White/Time Magic makes him excellent for a support role.

I have him as a Onion Knight (Worse Class)But now Im keepin him as his normal Job (OK Sucks)

Squire
Summon
Damage split
Two swords
Move+2

A squire with summon? That's an interesting choice. May I ask why that as a secondary on him, and not another character (say, a Black Mage)?

Summon has attacks and healing magic. Besides Ramza has high MA and theres nothing to stop me from putting summon on a wizard as well.

I just go on and defend my party. White mage all the way

Posted by: dajdawg 27th September 2013 08:20
My favorite 2 setups for Ramza would have to be:

Squire with excalibur.... rest of the gear doesn't matter much, just want the absorb holy. At level 99 just put level/3 and hit everyone with holy... just put holy absorbing stuff on the rest of the team. Usually, a battle is over just from him doing 1 action.

My other go to setup is monk/guts with 2 swords, hamedo/hp restore, equip armor, move +3, germanis boots... A few screams and you're runnin circles around everyone and are extremely powerful.

Posted by: Spooniest 30th September 2013 07:35
I play Ramza as the guy who's going to beat your ass if you so much as touch his team members...but that's not on the poll

I can't imagine why. Probably something about a discussion of things actually relevant to the topic. Who knows?

Anyway, on-topic, I've always used him as an agile brute, by trying to level him into Thief and Ninja ASAP to get movement bonuses and then back into a more traditional warrior class (usually Monk) with Squire secondary and Equip Armor. I find this makes him mostly immune from being hit hard and fast enough to ever go over. In my most recent playthrough, which is currently stalled early in Chapter 2 because I can't be bothered to fight the rest of my family for time on the iPad, I've gone a totally different way and have been grooming him as an attack-oriented Mage. I'm likely to give him some time as a Chemist soon too so he can utilize the gun that I'm about to get.

Edit.

Squire with a Ninja secondary.

Mark - Squire - 600 - 131 - 95 - 75
Excalibur - Guts
Escutcheon - Math Skill
Thief Hat - Damage Split
Rubber Costume - Maintenance
Feather Mantle - Move+3

Ninja.

Mark - Ninja - ? - ? - 95 - 75

Spell Edge - Throw
Spell Edge - Math Skill
Thief Hat - Damage Split
Rubber Costume - MagDef UP
Feather Mantle - Move+3

Strategies:

In groups we have no problem winning with optimal set up and playstyle. Many times we can win at high levels without Math Skill.

Single character challenges. I have Math Skill on Lightning if the solo character is outnumbered. Sometime the double Sword can win in fights alone.

Posted by: Anexu 23rd October 2015 22:11
He ends up being my Math Skill user, for a few reasons:

- 97 Faith - I like casting status effects through Math Skill, so Faith is more important to me than MA. I also dislike the "warning" messages for 94-faith characters, so my Ramza's faith ends up noticeably higher than, say, my Beowulf's.

- Excalibur - and other nice equipment options.

- Level-down / level-up - Ramza's not as a good a candidate for this as Reis, but he does have the very rare combination of above-average growth in both speed and MA, so he sees gains in all stats leveling down as something as simple as Chemist.

- Early Availability - Reis has more potential, but I can be Sleep-Frogging targets for stealing and poaching with Ramza much sooner, which I like.

Early in the game, I keep him a Squire for the stat growth and spill-over JP (my other characters ditch Squire as soon as they learn Accumulate). In chapter 3 he learns magic, then levels back down to 1 in Zeklaus Desert. Every time he gets into the 30s, I level him back down.

Perhaps his most important use, however, is Cheer Up. He's also my faith adjuster. I like this style for Ramza - he's a leader and tactician, shaping his teammates with stat adjustments and the battlefield with Math Skill status effects.

Posted by: chevleclair 24th October 2015 04:54
Squire, with 2 Swords or Jump, depending on the battle.

I do this for one reason, and one reason only: Scream. I've not played the PSP version, but liberal uses of Scream can turn Ramza into a buzzsaw. Give him Chaos blade and Excalibur (to parody a Buckcherry song- Hey, it's a crazy glitch but it works do good I'll just use it. And when I shred the demons and the ghosts, the pluses all on my man are really broken!") Even without the glitch, the only named character I use in the end is Agrias, so Ramza becomes this whirlwind of destruction.

Posted by: SolKensin 4th November 2015 19:35
My Ramza

Squire
Guts
Martial Arts (mainly for Chakra and Revive)
Blade Grasp
Two Swords
Fly

Posted by: FFTAlex 14th June 2018 21:03
Warning: I've stolen this setup 75% from a YouTube video made by JujuDredd. The video is titled "Final Fantasy Tactics - Steal Elmdor without letting him to play"

Equipment:
Rune Blade
Rune Blade
Thief Hat
Earth Clothes
Bracer

Skill Setup
Guts (Squire)
Math Skill
Blade Grasp
Two Swords
Move +3

I equipped this setup while trying to follow his video. What I found is that the Rune Blades extra MA made me incredibly powerful for magic. I begin almost every battle by wiping out 2-4 members of the opposing team. I don't really foresee changing this because I've been the same route as mostly everyone else travels while playing. That route being to equip Ramza with a couple Chaos Blades and the strongest armor you can find, and Punch Art or some similar skill.
