A classic heroic character's theme takes the third #1 seed and the first by Chrono Trigger. Bending, high-pitched notes evoke an Eastern feel backed by a determined marching drumbeat, echoing the nature of the valiant amphibian. This song got the most nomination points of any song that was new to the competition this year.
Ahead on Our Way is the initial overworld theme for Final Fantasy V, and while it appeared in the previous competition as well, its seed dropped precipitously this time. It was beaten soundly by FF9's Hunter's Chance last time, but has the last laugh as that track didn't make it in for 2017. Ahead on Our Way feels like an open world, optimistic and full of promise. |

...Naw, Ahead on Our Way can't beat Frog's Theme. Just isn't happening.
Frog's theme is way too glorious a representation of his character and the perfect opposite song versus Magus' Theme. |

"Ahead on Our Way" is actually a statement of two different FFV theme tunes, one for the heroic perspective on the story, serving as the main theme tune of the game, and one for sadness.
It's certainly a nice and tuneful track, though I think the loop back could be a tad bit smoother. But it's an excellent introduction to the whole game. Frog's Theme has an in-game version, which is missing its 8-bar "intro" section, which I've heard was omitted for space reasons. But the proper 24-bar version, which is present in the soundtrack, is the one linked above, so...thank you. Frog's Theme, like Cyan's Theme from FF6, is a perfect blend of a cause for heroism and tinges of sorrow and suffering that underscore that desire. Unlike Cyan's theme, which expresses a feeling of stoic resignation, Frog's theme is more directly poignant and intense. My vote goes to Frog's Theme.
