Self-explanatory. I'm surprised no one has put this up yet.

I'm pretty sure that most MMORPGs are dead give aways. Other than that, these are the games I found to be most addicting:

Super Monkey Ball 2- This is pretty much the most addicting console game I've ever played. Weird environments, never the same concept twice. So much great multiplayer action, like dogfight and monkey gun.

Animal Crossing- I spent so many hours trying to pay back Tom Nook : (

007 Goldeneye- Best multiplayer FPS ever.

Posted by: Caesar 26th August 2005 21:42
Heliattack3. So addicting, in fact, that I played until I beat my score of 200. I now have a record of 342 kills with over 20,000,000 points, but the shockwave.com high score thingy wasn't working when I went to submit it. I have proof for anybody interested.

Other than that, NBA Street Vol3 is pretty addicting, as is Diablo II.

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 26th August 2005 21:50
I find Diablo and MK games to be addiscting. I have hard time putting them down once I pick them up.

Posted by: karasuman 26th August 2005 23:37
Katamari Damacy.

I hated this game when my husband's best man brought it home right before the wedding. It seemed weird and random with annoying music and difficult controls.

Now, scarcely a day goes by that I don't play it. The controls are intuitive once you get the hang of them, I love the music, and...this is one of the best games ever.

Posted by: Spiffyness 27th August 2005 00:47
Helliattack 3, Katamari Damanci, and pretty much everything already mentioned are all plenty addicting, but they're nothing compared to GUNBOUND. Man I love that game.

Oh, and Warioware. Gotta love Warioware.

Posted by: Mimic 27th August 2005 01:12
Bishi Bashi Special for the PS1. It's about 200 or so hilarious mini-games in one. I particularly like the one where you copy the way the on-screen lights flash on your controller to make your character's afro grow. Not alot of people have played it, but I'd imagine it to be a great 'post-pub' game - I've had it for about five, maybe six years now, and I'll still play a few games whilst I'm heating some food or running a bath.

Posted by: Ultros: Octopus Royalty 27th August 2005 01:56
First and foremost, Tetris. 'Nuff said.

Secondly, for some reason, I'm horribly addicted to LOZ, OOT. I must have played that game at least 15 times by now. The cartrige has eaten my soul. pinch.gif

And finaly, Gladius, for the GC. I played that game into the wee hours of the night while at my boyfriend's place. I think he was beginning to regret ever showing it to me. What can I say, I just can't resist smiting people, especialy in a game where you can play as a powerful nordic woman.

Posted by: Glenn Magus Harvey 27th August 2005 04:05
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
Tetris (if you're good)
Donkey Kong (GB)

I can't quite think of any other really good examples, but they're usually those games that are not to difficult, but provide sufficient challenge to actually reach very high on the 'fun' value. Then they have to be able to keep going, and going, and going...

Plus, 101 levels of sheer ape-chasing always helps. (DKGB)

Posted by: laszlow 27th August 2005 05:07
Tetris wins, but I'll give honorable mentions to Katamari Damacy, Lumines, Civilization II, Ape Escape, Super Monkey Ball, and WINDJAMMERS.

Oh, and I dunno what's up with your sudden fascination with DK '94, GMH, but it's an awesome game. I still remember that damn Iceberg stage that had an elementary-school laszlow frustrated for months.

Posted by: SilverFork 27th August 2005 06:42
Katamari Damacy (and likely its upcoming sequel), Animal Crossing, Tetris, almost the entire Harvest Moon series and the Super Monkey Balls are givens. However, the most addictive games of all time, in my opinion, are:

- Ms. Pac-Man
- Pac-Man
- Centipede
- Space Invaders
(All arcade versions, though the Atari 2600 port of Space Invaders is quite good)

I could literally play any of those four games forever and not become tired out (well, other than for that stupid 'sleeping' thing, which I'd probably have to do every once in a while). Sadly, only one arcade 'round here still has Centipede and Pac-Man (that I know of), so most of the time the only way to enjoy those and the other two is to pop in the less-than-awesome Atari ports.

Edit
Not to be a grammar 'n' spelling Nazi, but I thought I should just point this out: The word you're looking for is "addictive", not "addicting". "Addicting" is a verb, indicating the act of becoming dependent on something; "addictive" is an adjective, one that describes something you're addicted to like the video games we're discussing. My apologies - I just saw the improper term used in most of the posts and kinda snapped. Arrgh, I'm becoming what I hate! Feel free to ignore this li'l insignificant message if you wish. smile.gif

I believe Tetris is the game I have stuck with the most over the years. At this point, I can regularly go 300+ lines (I try doing nothing but tetrises to try and keep up the challenge level).

More recently, though, I've really gotten into FFT. When I first got it, I played it for 2 months straight, starting over like 5 or 6 times, heh.

Posted by: L. Cully 27th August 2005 16:37
Wario Ware. I've never played the second one, but the first sucks up my life.

Also Tetris Attack.

Posted by: GamblingCat 27th August 2005 17:50
WarioWare, Starcraft, and Tales of Symphonia they are super addicting, id put in WoW but its a MMORPG.

Posted by: Phunbaba 27th August 2005 23:16
WoW is still game even if it is an MMORPG.

But I'd have to say WarioWare, Diablo, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, Halo 2, Advance Wars, and Super Castlevania 4 (most any Castlevania game for that matter).

Posted by: Moglv99 28th August 2005 15:32
The most addicting game I ever played was YugiOh Forbidden memories, I spend half of my life trying to get rare cards....and to achieve the 999999 starchips, even I bought extra memories cards. Gladly I quited... thumbup.gif

Posted by: No-Name 28th August 2005 23:58

Actually, I agree with this. I beat the one for g/c in a few days, with getting all the badges and star pieces and everything. I just couldn't stop playing, and I don't know why.

I forgot that game when I posted earlier. I'm sure there are others I forgot, too. tongue.gif

Posted by: footbigmike 27th September 2005 20:57
Bomberman. It's fun, time-consuming, and you keep trying to get the high-score. I've never beat the original for the Megadrive yet, and ive played it hundreds of times!

Posted by: madmangunner 29th September 2005 19:56
my favortie addicting game is of course the suffering i just think it is so awesome that if you dont kill all the people you run into you get a different ending then if you leave a few or spare them all

Posted by: The Ancient 29th September 2005 21:10
There was a time when I was spending every spare moment playing Super Smash Bros. I'd make random teams to combat me under secret pretenses. I'd play ever character under ever possible combat situation. If you take a look at the statistics for my cartridge you might be somewhat appalled. I guarentee your top games played isn't in the same order of magnitude as my Jigglypuff has by himself.

I played it alot.

Posted by: Kairo 29th September 2005 21:45
Tetris - Moving blocks around is fun.
Mutant League Football - A football game with landmines, aliens, and ref killing audibles.
General Chaos - Lead squads of commandos against General Havok.
Final Fantasy Tactics - Duh, I made an entire Sim game after this. And I had over 300 active players at one point. biggrin.gif
Dragon Warrior - That's right. The original. Spent thousands of hours playing it.

tetris
Super smash brothers melee (two SSB is all a gamer could ever hope for)
Counter strike
Diablo2
Speed football (don't get me started...)

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
and now a third SSB installment is coming out

my sc2 save has several *weeks* of playtime in vs mode logged onto it, and we have been usually just turning it off and not save match statistics for a while (awaiting 10/25). my tk5 save has about a third as much.

when i was first playing through fft, then learning to perfect the game through abusing certain aspects of the code, i put over 300 hours into it.

dark cloud 2 -- i spent so much time gertting every single medal in the game, except the ones with monica's monster, because those suck so bad. at the same time, i was levelling up enough weapons to get one of each of the ench of the weapon tree's branches (like 12-14 in all or something) i must have played it many hours a day for weeks straight.

ssb/ssbm -- i liked it because it's a fighting game easy enough that i can include my little brother when playing it and still have plenty of fun.

any rare game, but honorable mention does to banjo-tooie. the breadth of that game was extremely impressive for an n64 so plagued by mediocre offerings.

Posted by: Kotestu 6th October 2005 03:02
definetly, Diablo, Rome total war, and ragnarok online

Posted by: MogMaster 6th October 2005 03:12
Mystical Ninja 64. It's only a 12 hour game, but damn was it impossible to put down. It was a game where I had to take it in one shot because you always wanted to see what was next. Upgrade next. Next Robot fight. Insanely good RPG gameplay wise, character wise, and ESPECIALLY music wise. The sound track to that game was incredible. The music alone was addicting.

Others-
Well... I guess I'll throw a bone to KOTORII which I spent 45 hours straight playing. I couldn't sleep until I had beaten that game. Sleeping would interfere with my saving the galaxy.

ES III: Morrowind
- I spent, total, an equivelant amount of hours to 3 months of my life in front of that game. Got everything....I'm pretty sure. Tamriatic Lore has nothing left to show me anyhow.

Posted by: master_tonberry 12th October 2005 00:38
Katamari Damacy and the old-school favorite alleyway. Both are simple, increadably addicting games.

I am also a recovering Morrowind addict. Good lord that game takes away your life.

Posted by: Worldwyrm 12th October 2005 14:45
Lord of the Rings is an addicting game. Ever since I got it I cant stop playing it. thumbup.gif

Posted by: Shadow Monroe 14th October 2005 04:07
I find Advance Wars 2 to be a very addicting game. I've spent more time playing that game than any other GBA game. I'm looking forward to getting a DS so I can play AW: Dual Strike.

Also, I'm yet another victim of Morrowind's addictiveness.

Posted by: Dragon King 3rd May 2006 18:26
OMG NOONE SAID HARVEST MOON 4 64 Thats one of the best games in the universes of universes! Yeah it may look stupid but its very very very very addicting after awile.....BUT NOW I CANT RENT IT SINCE 64 IS TOO OLD mad.gif sleep.gif sad.gif

YESSS!!! Another person that likes gladius. My roomate and I baught that game (I was interested because I was taking a class on rome) and it ended up being the most addicting game I ever played. By the end of night 1, I was in the middle of Nordaugh in Valens' story (yes, we played for 10 hours straight.) The best part- once you beat it, there was another mildly-different-but-eventually-identical plot to follow. Hoorah!

'Kirby Superstar' was a game I played all the time as a kid. Shame I don't know what happened to it. sad.gif

Most easily causes obsessive auto-association in my brain:

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Cave Story
Castlevania (any Castletroid, including SotN, HoD, CotM, AoS,...)

...and that's about all I've played recently.

Posted by: FinalFantasyFreak 10th May 2006 00:19
I easily get addicted so...

Radiata Stories-I played that game for 36hrs when I first got it!

MK: Deception-couldn't stop till I beat the story

Counterstrike-Best FPS ever!

FFIX-my first rpg for the PS1. I couldn't put it down.

SW:KOTOR 1&2- OMG! These are the best games for Xbox!

Gungrave: Overdose- hard game to put down

Battalion Wars-When I bought this game it was 11pm I started playing it at 11:30PM. Next time I looked at the clock it was 11:30AM.

Animal Crossing-I've probably spent over 1000 hours on this game

WarioWare and WarioWare: Twisted- Best games for the GBA

Gundam Battle Assault 2- I doubt anyones heard of this game but me and my friend played this every day for about a year. Me and him were invincible. Then we stopped playing it and now we suck.

Any Harvest Moon game.

There are more but I can't remember them right now.

I would like to necro this thread to throw Borderlands into the ring. I bought it during the Steam sale about a month ago and didn't play it until I got back from Chicago at the beginning of this month. It's now been about three weeks since then and I've put 67 hours into the game. I've beaten it on a single player, and now Dragon_Fire, malevolence and I have a new campaign going. I also have a second single-player going, another file going (playthrough 2 of my original completion) with a college friend, and then yet ANOTHER one going with three other college friends. It's a little upsetting how much I play this game, but at the same time it's been a very long time since I completed a game and immediately wanted to start a new playthrough of it. Generally I'm worn out - I just want to keep going forever.

This is me 6 years ago. I'm 100% influenced by zeitgeist in that post. I had recently played Super Monkey Ball and Lumines for the first time and was well into my year-long Katamari kick. I also suspect that's when I started emulating NeoGeo games hardcore, which is where WINDJAMMERS fits in. Ape Escape is one of my favorite PS1 games, so I guess that's why it's mentioned. Nothing to say about Tetris or Civ 2, those are addictive as **** any day of the week.

Nowadays, the things that get my neurotransmitters flowing are grindy RPGs. If I get hooked on an RPG, then I binge until it's finished. My favorite grindfests nowadays are my four D's: Disgaea, Diablo, Dragon Quest, and Dragon Age. In addition to those you can throw in FF Tactics and Torchlight.

Posted by: Stiltzkin 30th July 2011 00:00
My Fallout 3 save file had racked up over 300 hrs by the time I was done with it.

Fallout: New Vegas is looking to end up being even longer. They are just such vast games, and I'm an utter completist. It's a bad mix.

Also FF9's TETRA MASTER, like I have played for hours upon hours personally.
Nearly purchased FF11 so I could play TETRA MASTER online.

I've been playing too much TF2 recently.

The good thing is that I've now logged 76 hours worth of playing TF2. This is just two hours less than the 78 hours I've logged playing Recettear: an Item Shop's Tale. I'd like to keep Recettear on top and this is a useful excuse to keep me from playing TF2.

Tetris is very addictive.

I also love mario 3 and zelda and metroid game and ultima underworld.

I used to spend hours playing tetris on the gameboy more than almost any game and get close to 200 lines once, which is very hard.
I was like:12 years old and remember this quite well.

76 hrs = 2+ hrs per day for a mere month (if you just started now when the game became free, then it's decent)

FFVII = between 700-900 hrs logged

Honestly, the minigames, the leveling and the morphing to get the sources enough for top stats in all regards ........ testing all possibly theoretically possible secrets before the internet came and told me everything I needed to know... Oh My God, THAT is some screwed up addiction, and had me almost repeating a year of elementary school!

And I still happen to pick up the game for a "quick" play through, so many years later (I know, I'm not healthy)

Posted by: No-Name 11th October 2011 17:38
I don't play as many games these days, but I am an addict when it comes to these.

Tetris (GB) I still find myself playing it for hours on end.

Tekken 6. I choose 6 only because it's the most recent title I own. My friends and I can easily burn away 70+ rounds on any given weekend.

Pretty much any Mega Man game. Gotta love the blue bomber.

Dynasty Warriors (they're the same) Something about killing thousands in the middle of a war zone is very satifying.

Final Fantasy Tactics. When I first picked it up, I didn't put it down until I beat it. This happens everytime I feel like playing it again.

Lode Runner (C64) collecting boxes has never been so fun and hasn't been since.

Posted by: Glenn Magus Harvey 12th October 2011 17:46
Been playing too much Spelunky again lately. It's like, I pick it up every time I'm bored, and it's actually interesting enough that it's not a rehash of the same stuff over again as with most games.

Key to its success is the fact that the dungeon levels are always randomly generated, leading to a different adventure every time.

2017 update!

Stardew Valley - Yeesh, when this game hit Steam I played it nonstop, over and over again, racking up some 400 hours in under a year. Incredible, better than any Harvest Moon game I have played, and that's saying a lot because I *loved* Harvest Moon 64 a great deal, but will probably never bother with it again thanks to this game.

World of WarCraft - I really enjoyed experiencing this game's unique history from the beginning, which combined my love for RPGs with my love of all WarCraft games and it did it beautifully. It's not so addictive now, but it still reigns supreme for hours played, years after I stopped playing it religiously. No game has held my attention so consistently for 12+ years. I still come back now and again to see what's new.

Pokemon Red & Blue - The originals have always been the best. Sure, they're imbalanced and the new games have so much more content, but the originals felt just right. Lots of Pokemon, but not too many that it's overwhelming. Plus, glitching the game without modifications (like the Mew glitch) has added a whole new layer of fun for me to collect what I am missing. New playthroughs are always very satisfying with just enough customization to keep it fun.

2017 update!

For a while, I played a good amount of TF2, as well as a good amount of Mines Perfect -- a Minesweeper implementation that basically forced me to do linear algebra every so often in order to solve it. But nowadays my go-to game for passing some time is 100% Orange Juice.
