I know that the game leaves it ambiguous. I want to see what players have to say about this issue.
I personally think that Azala is female. First, she makes a better foil against Ayla (plot element); second, most names that end in "a" are female names (leading me to infer my conclusion); three, I somehow decided when I first saw Azala's sprite that it was a she (I still don't know how that happened--maybe because it was the first two reasons); and four, I'm making an RPG in which this nasty girl (whom I know from my high school) turns into Azala near the end of the game. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. For some reason I remember them referring to Azala as "he."

She is definately a female. If you remember, the game said she was going to marry some guy. I forgot his name though.

I'm pretty sure the game referred to Azala as male, but I could be wrong. At any rate, I like the idea of Azala being female, because there aren't enough good female villains in that game. The only other ones are Queen Zeal and Flea, and Flea doesn't technically count. I also like the idea of a female villain NOT being either a sexpot or an ugly old hag, although for all I know, Azala could be a great beauty among the Reptites.

I thought Edea made a decent female villain in FFVIII, and Beatrix from FFIX was an EXCELLENT female villain Possible spoilers: highlight to view ...well, she started out as a villain at least I used to think of Azala as a "he" but after seeing Glenn's reasoning, I now think of Azala as female. im almost positive that it is a male. pretty sure that somebody referred to azala to "he". either way is fine with me i guess. doesnt matter what your gender may be, as long as you can kick some serious booty!

Definately a he. Body language, game flow, appearance, everything dictated that Azala was the King/Emperor of the Reptites.

Now I think Tidu-who is right. Didn't they refer to Azala being a king? I think they did. This is getting very confusing . Oh well, I am sure there could be a hundred reasons to show that Azala could be either a male or female.

We could solve this very easily by someone playing through that section of the game rather than just guessing. Perhaps someone should do that.

Having played it a little time ago, I can testify that there are no indications about his/her gender. Azala is refered to as the Reptites' leader, and that's it. And he/she doesn't use any word that would give a clue about him/her having a gender...so I guess it's up to everyone to decide.
I personally have always thought of Azala as a he. And I really can't explain why... This post has been edited by Mr Thou on 26th November 2003 20:32 |

I always figured him to be a he, which is what i voted for, but yet i'm not sure
another thought is that the reptites are a race that have no genders, they might not even breed or they could be like plants and have both roles of reproduction the creators just decided to not give that much insight This post has been edited by Cloud_Strife510 on 28th November 2003 21:48 -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

I was just playing it last week. I'm positive that Ayla said "king of Reptites." So unless "king" to Ayla is just a term for any head honcho, Azala'd be male.
Quote another thought is that the reptites are a race that have no genders, they might not even breed Since they're obviously 1) vertebrates and 2) cold blooded and 3) referred to as "dinosaur people" in the Japanese version, I think they're just supposed to be a highly-evolved species of reptile. I think only lower life forms are asexual and gender-neutral. The reason is, that sexual reproduction allows the greatest amount of diversity within the species. There's no real need for the lower life forms to have this characteristic. Also, note that there were treasure chests shaped like eggs in the Tyrano Lair. Egg laying is another reptilian characteristic. Quote most names that end in "a" are female names (leading me to infer my conclusion); Tata Yakra Toma Flea Masa (I'm pretty sure they're referred to as "brothers") So yeah, I know you said "most" so this isn't news to you, but I think it's mostly coincidence. I'll certainly agree with you that there are plenty of other good villainesses, it's just that CT seemed somewhat lacking in that regard. Hence my reply. |

Update: I reexamined images of Azala recently, and I personally think that the in-game Azala looks female, while the drawn Azala and the one in the cartoon look somewhat male.

you know, i've never even contemplated it, i've always just taken her to be a female. i have played the japanese version, too, and it most likely would have cleared the gender up in speech, so since i don't remember even considering it, i believe she is female.
