Y'all know about this right? Well it just come out and it's looking to be a preeeeetty sweet collection of remixes to the FF VI soundtrack. They turned Aria de Mezzo Carattere into something right out an early eighties Styx album so YMMV.

For myself, I've only heard two songs so far and already I'm all:

I third this emotion presented. I should be sleeping, and I can't stop listening to these. Cyan was particularly excellent, reminding me of the Samurai Champloo soundtrack.

The Styx comparison is so apt. Or maybe moreso, Queen's Night at the Opera album.

Edit
Edits as I listen:
Holy Dubstep Mog. How appropriate for the character who's ability is dance.

Yeah, I'd been following this for a bit because Lasz won't shut up about it. But I'm going to try it out in the very near future, myself.

I've enjoyed what I've heard so far. The opera is a very interesting take. I got much more of a Queen/Bohemian Rhapsody feeling from the first part of the opera myself rather than Styx, it's all pretty fun!

Let me preface this by saying that I started going back to Overclocked Remix back when I was a Sophomore or Junior in high school. And I'm nearing 28 now. So I'd been visiting the site for a long time. When the community was still small, I was able to recognize my favorite artists and could appreciate the style that each had. Eventually the community grew enough that they were able to put the energy into creating their first album, Relics of the Chozo. It completely changed how people would see the remixing gaming community. Creating these opuses gave credibility to these remixers. They were no longer neckbeards playing with fruity loops, but artists paying homage to their childhood. As the site grew, the projects became plentiful, and some of the artists I had grown to love had either moved on or created their own projects. Mustin helped form the One-Ups, McVaffe did... what McVaffe does. The changing of the guard was when I sort of fell away from the site. Most compositions became too homogenized. A lot of the projects didn't share the same sense of awe as the earlier ones had.

When I had learned about this project, I had little interest. In fact, it's release snuck up on me. Since I'm on break from work, I figured why not download it and give it a try. I watched the trailer. A lot of my favorite artists appeared to have resurfaced for this project (Joshua Morse, Mazedude, Disco Dan, Mustin, and yes, even McVaffe). I downloaded it immediately and the first-of-five discs blew me away. This is what remixing was to me. Variety, inspiration, while remaining true to the source. It wasn't until I arrived at the third disc that it almost lost all credibility. I listened to each track individually, but had I not, they could have almost blended into each other in some techno-dubstep amalgamation. The creativity was gone. The Danny Elfman-inspired Kefka theme or the flamencoed-up Mt. Koltz is the originality I was looking for. Ultimately, it came back together in the fourth and final act of the project (the fifth disc is bonus material).

Overall, I'd say that this is a project definitely worthy of your hard drive. If anything, it will kick up the dust and you might just rediscover the nostalgia and passion of the best Final Fantasy game ever crafted.

[Entire post: for details, see above]

I have a very similar opinion of and history with OCremix as Gabe, and I almost agree entirely with his review of the album. I was also pleasantly surprised to find this album had been released. It's genesis was a fact I had heard about in passing and disregarded, because I don't visit OCremix much anymore. I was pleased to see some of my favorite artists had come back on board to do some tracks, like McVaffe, dB, djpretzel, &c.

I do, however, have a different opinion of the third disc. I thought the whole album was good all the way through. Granted, I've always been a huge fan of DJ pretzel, and pretty much everything he does, so the Devils Lab remix by him on the third disc was a welcome treat, even if nothing else on it had dazzled me, which is far from the case. I tried not to like dubstep when it came out, but as someone who likes to dance, and bass in general, I found it hard to resist, although I do think most of it is rubbish. The tracks that were dubstep based here were far from bad though, in my opinion. There were also alot of tracks that were less dubstep and more electronica/technoish, which I've been given to understand are different genres. I might be splitting hairs, but just so, the whole of disc three wasn't quite so generic as you make it seem, I think.

Take Black Genesis (The Floating Continent), which was on disc three. It's a little electronic, but no more so than Rush gets at times. Also, they rock the hell out of that song, which helps. There's a couple other tracks that are less electronic based on disc three too, but it's true, a lot of it isn't relying so much on instruments, so if that's not your thing, you should beware. Personally, I thought it was great. Other than that, I second Gabe's conclusion entirely... except I found the Danny Elfman Kefka (a comparison I also made when I listened to it), to be lackluster. Not bad, just sort of meh, IMO.

Ok then, other than that first thing, and the other thing I just mentioned, I second Gabe's conclusion entirely. biggrin.gif

Edit
I just listened to disc three again and had to give at least a mention to the track Event Horizon (The Day After). It's effin brilliant. Haunting, chilling, eerie, true to the original, and well executed.

Edit
Other edits: some grammar, and errors of stupidity.

Listen to this has been the highlight of the day for a few days now. Only a few tracks I would call meh (I'm not a fan of the chiptune-y remixes, and the Battle Theme was completely pointless), and while I'm not always a big fan of hard electronica, a number of them are really cool (I don't like the Fierce Battle treatment, but it succeeds at what it attempted).
The Opera is amazing, the Empire theme is amazing, Mt Koltz is amazing, the requiem is surprisingly good, and I really love the vocal-infused electronica tracks that don't necessarily follow the original melody to a T (On the Run, Tastes Like Victory, the Martial Law remix). Haven't even finished it yet. Great great great.

I believe he was referring to "Till We Meet Again", the ballad as being Styx-esque, while you are thinking of "The Impresario", which is certainly the most Queenish song ever made, including those by Queen.
