I've done it, but I don't feel it's worth it. Shadow is more than likely going to leave you in the middle of Zozo if you pick him up, and it's not like he's THAT much better than Edgar, Sabin, Gau, or Cyan.

When you hire Shadow before Zozo, he will stay until you complete a certain amount of gil/xp with him in the party. I don't know the limit, but if you spend time leveling up the group, he will certainly leave before finishing Zozo. Also, just because of the numerous fights, Shadow will likely leave in the middle of Zozo. If you try running from fights, Shadow will stay in the group longer, but regardless of how many fights you are in, Shadow will never join you when meeting Ramuh. One time when I played through, I made a point of using Shadow in Zozo, and as soon as the fight with the boss in Zozo is over, Shadow takes his leave.

I'm not positive, but I think the gil/xp system used during Zozo is the same as when you first get Shadow with Sabin. I've seen people spend a lot of time leveling Sabin and Shadow up before even getting Cyan, and Shadow leaves at the end of the Magitek Armor scene in the desert. When I play that section, I spend little time leveling up, so Shadow last until Baron Falls.

I usually recruit him there just so I can have him in my party. I think the last time I played through I ran from fights to keep him from leaving.

I didn't even know you could get Shadow during that part. That's because I always keep a full party at that part. Interesting to know though.

It's a good part to use him, because it's one of the only times he won't run away. But I use him more during the Sabin scenario.

Neither did I. He's at Kohlingen, right?

That's not necessarily true. Sometimes Shadow will leave after the battle with Dadaluma, but sometimes he'll stay. I've had him in my party during the cutscene with Ramuh a few times, so it can be done.
I recruit Shadow in Kohlingen and keep him in my party for awhile so I can see his dream sequences, but once I'm ready to head into Zozo, I usually go back to Narshe to pick up Edgar or Sabin.

i never knew that the length of time shadow spent in your party was determined by your exp/gp earnings. i was ialways under the impression that it was "random" as explained in the official strategy guides and not to mention the fact that hes left my party after one battle in a few playthroughs. im on the verge of a playthrough rite at this moment i think ill try making it to zozo with shadow this time around. i remember once i tried to bring him back to narshe to switch out members and he left my party waisting my time and money lol.

I always thought it was completely random, too. I've had times where Shadow left after just one or two battles, and other times where he'd stay until I reached a point where the plot called for him to leave.

Shadow leaving the party is random!

From Terii senshi's Algorithms FAQ V 2.3:

Code

*********************
2.14 Shadow Leaving
*********************

Any time after the Imperial Camp, and before the Floating Continent, and not
on the Phantom Train, if Shadow is in your party he has a chance to leave at
the end of combat. He has a 1 in 16 chance of leaving at the end of every
combat. If Shadow is the only character alive, then he won't run. If the
combat is a pincer, side, or back attack he won't run. Shadow also won't run
if he has Wound, Petrify, or Zombie status.

Am I right in thinking there's certain parts where he's guaranteed to leave if he hasn't already through the random algorithm though? Just before Baron Falls for example?

You're absolutely right, Cefca. In Sabin's scenario, Shadow always leaves just before Sabin & Cyan jump over the waterfall. If you recruit him again in Kohlingen, he'll always leave if you return to Narshe. If Shadow is in the party when you find Terra in Zozo, he'll always leave when Celes & Locke are planning to infiltrate Vector. He also leaves after rescuing Relm from the house fire in Thamasa. But other than that, his leaving the party is random. Thank you for confirming what I always suspected, diovanti. biggrin.gif

I guess I always got lucky and had Shadow stay for a couple dozen fights. Thanks for clearing that up, FFVI was my favorite and my friends consider me a walking encyclopedia when it comes to Final Fantasy info. I always wished there were more times you could have Shadow in your party, like when Locke was sneaking through South Figaro.

What you can do at that part is to recruit Shadow in Kohlingen, then walk up to the house to the north and to the forest there, and rent a chocobo to walk down to Zozo. That way, Shadow can't leave because you won't fight (if you still have him when you get the bird). Also, it saves a lot of time because that is a long walk.

In my experience, Shadow vs. Dadaluma in Zozo is a powerful matchup. I'm not saying it's usually that hard of a fight, but the Throw command is really powerful if you have just a few Shurikens.

He's quite potent; Shuriken punch through Safe nicely, and the Skeans are even stronger (boosted by Earrings, possibly). His Inviz Edge is also quite nice, since it allows him to dodge those ever-threatening Throws weapons from Dadaluma.

This is all relevant in an unknown, strange universe where you don't disable Dadaluma on turn 1 with Imp, obviously.

For trivia, you can even complete the Zozo quest, keep a spot open for Shadow and recruit him en route to the Opera House, but since he'll leave you before you even get to Ultros (off-screen event), it's a suboptimal (though fun) option.

IMPRESARIO: Your friend left. Said he'd have fallen asleep in another 5 minutes…

I had no idea about that. I'm just at that point on a playthrough right now. I may do that.

Didn't know any of this but I have always thought as cool a character Shadow is they could have done better.

Throw Is the only ability I know on that game with an ammo supply (If not counting magic). I usually Just teach him magic and go to town.

Well thats one thing about shadow I never knew about in the opera house. Course watching HCBaileys videos I found other stuff I never knew about in all my years playing this games.

Back on topic: I usually get him to join eveyr other time I go through there. Right now I'm just past the part where you have Locke, Celes, and two other party members lvl 30 and I might take a try with the opera house trick....course I'll be out one character when I go to the Magitek Factory

I wonder if he takes precedence over any of the six people you can bring along in the conversation with Ramuh...like, if you only bring Gau, will Shadow talk about his grandma telling him stories?

That's a pretty awesome achievement, though. I don't think I've even ever tried bringing Shadow along there. At what point is he forced out of your party, similar to Baren Falls?

I get the feeling he leaves just before you leave Zozo but I'm not 100% on that.

I cheated to get Shadow there and he leaves once you finish the cut scene following Ramuh. I remembered that right after it played out since I haven't done it in so long. He leaves as the cut scene is ending.

For me, he left Zozo when everyone else did. If that's what you mean by "as the cut scene is ending," that's good.

I only did so when I tried a Shadow SCC. But, I left Gau on the Veldt before the Opera house, and so lost that playthough.
