I'm taking the challenge! I had started it in Dawn of Souls, but didn't get far for sundry reasons, so I'm trying again on the PSP version. (I HIGHLY doubt I'll be able to beat Chronodia, but still.)
Jaime the Lv. 4 RM just beat Garland and has Cure, Protect, & Sleep. Anyone got any advice/warnings/etc?

Double posting is okay if it's an update/thread revival, right?

Anyway. Jaime the Red Wizard. Lv. 99, with 999 maximum HP & MP (and 999,999 Gil), after only 16:09 gameplay time.

Current equipment:
  • Kikuichimonji
  • Protect Cloak
  • Ribbon
  • Diamond Armlet
  • Protect Ring

Current spell set:
  • Protect - Sleep - Blink
  • Temper - Blindna - Dark
  • Fira - Thundara - Cura
  • Haste - Blizzara - Confuse
  • Curaga - Firaga - Teleport
  • Exit - Thundara
  • NulDeath - Blizzaga

All four crystals have been restored, and I've been going through the Soul of Chaos dungeons for items, weapons, and shiggles. Earthgift Shrine and Hellfire Chasm I was able to get though with little to no problems. I can't beat Shinryu or Omega at the bottom of Lifespring Grotto (not that I'm surprised), but I got the Judgment Staff from Atomos, so I'm not complaining.
I was able to make it though aaallllll the way to the bottom of Whisperwind Cove (and manage to buy a buttload of Light Curtains in the process) only to find myself completely unable to beat Death Gaze at B40. His (its? Does Death Gaze have a gender?) insta-death spells are easily dealt with by the Protect Ring, but his physical attacks are damn powerful. I even tried breaking the rules of the challenge and reviving the three intentionally downed party members, having them only Defend, simply to give Death Gaze something to deal with while Jaime got buffer and support spells up. They fared as well as you'd expect a White Wizard, Black Wizard, and Master at Lv. 2, with no spells, no equipment, and 1 HP to fare.
So I can't get the Lightbringer, the Red Wizard's strongest weapon (also meaning no MP-less Holy), but hey.
I also couldn't beat Warmech, but I'm not terribly surprised by that either. I also wasn't at Level 99 when I faced it. I don't feel like trekking through the Mirage Tower and the Flying Fortress just to try again.

So I guess it's Chaos time! Wish me luck!

I'm thinking about writing a short Solo Red Mage guide for CoN; not a full walkthough, just some tips and advice.

I'm pretty impressed, but have you tried solo Monk?

It's more than possible to beat Shinryu, IMO.

No, but I'm trying a solo Fighter run. It's ridiculously difficult.

Also, UPDATE: Beat the game! Chaos wasn't too difficult once I figured out that the effects of the Blink spell stack (also allowed me to beat Death Gaze and get the Lightbringer and Ultima Weapon).

I am impressed. Probably the hardest party is 4 White Mages, though; if you want a really serious conduct play.

Despite being years late, I am very interested to know how this turned out.

Seems like the game was beaten.

I did a solo Red Mage run and got all the way to the final boss, at which point I had problems. Pretty sure this was on the Dawn of Souls version. The cartridge no longer saves for me, alas, but I should be able to load saves, so maybe I'll dust it off and try again. This was several years ago that I did this, but I remember most of it not being a big challenge.
