Thoughts on the FF IV remake.

I don't know about anyone else, but IV is one of my favorite games in the series. I was looking forward to the remake and bought it the day it came out. All the excitement went down the drain after I finished the game. I understand the game was a remake, but they changed certain monster locations, had every boss in the game have some stupid counter ability, and just changed the overall feel of the game. I was so disappointed that after completing it, I sold it. Was anyone else as disappointed as I was? It seems Square Enix can't remake a game very well, as the III remake sucked horribly as well. Any thoughts?

Personally, I love the DS version of III (minus the insane amount of grinding needed for max levels and job levels).
As for the IV remake, I've never played it myself but my friend who has it loves it for increasing the challenge of the game, and adding augments to change up the game play a bit.

Was it the DS version you played?

I think it was okay, but a different experience nonetheless. I never really was a fan of the augment system (my vision is augmented!). The PSP one felt more "true" to original which I prefer.

And why do you think the III remake sucked horribly? I thought it was good, but maybe I'm biased here as I loved the original >_>

I thought the PSP remake of IV was great. It was definitely one of my favorite games.

I wasn't hugely impressed with the DS remake either, however my brothers really liked it. If it was intended to appeal to people who'd never played FFIV or maybe even any FF or RPG it certainly worked.

It seems you're talking about the DS version, which I haven't played, but part of your post intrigues me in that you mention lame counter abilities. The thing about FFIV I noticed is that a lot of bosses just naturally would counter-attack, and if you weren't paying attention it just seemed like they were really fast. Is it that there are more counters, or are some of the one's that were there already are now just named, I have to wonder.

As to the other remakes, the two I played were the PS1 and GBA versions, and I was incredibly impressed with both of them-- especially the GBA, which above the other GBA remakes of the SNES games, I feel went A and B the C of D.

As to III, I never played that remake either, but I did play the NES. I had a friend show me the DS one and describe it to me, and I was a bit turned off to it, yeah. My complaint about what I heard is... well, they sound like they made the game more playable, which was half the fun of III. What I did hear made up for it was more incentive stuff like unlockable content for mastering Job Classes and stuff like that.

Having no NDS of my own, I've only played that version of it far enough to just before Cagnazzo. Maybe I'm easier to please than some folks when it comes to FF4, but I really didn't have a beef with the NDS version. I thought it was about as true to the original as a 3D version could be, and I didn't feel like I was being put out at any point by playing it.

That's assuming we are in fact talking about the NDS version. That seems like the only one that really qualifies as a "remake" and not a "port" or a "port with extra stuff," if you ask me.

First of all, I consider all versions of FF IV, minus the PSP version ports because in all sense of the word, they are not remakes. The DS version is actually a remake. I know some bosses in the original IV countered, but I remember Zeromus in the DS version (henceforth known as the remake) automatically counters Bahamut, making one of the best attacks in the game almost worthless. This is incredibly stupid. Whyt was incredibly stupid as well. The game just felt so different.

Don't even get me started on the III remake. First of all they gave the characters names for no reason, and I mean no reason. I hate the design of the game (I'm sick of all the tactics artwork, it has no place in a numbered entry.). My black mage can also equip a bow and arrow all of a sudden. It make's switching classes without grinding more of a pain. I loved the original III, and the original was a lot better. I must say though, that I'm very much against huge changes. I just can't fathom why one who likes the original would much care for the remake, but that's my opinion I suppose.

Actually they couldn't equip bows. A black mage has never been able to. Introducing characters in III, was a terrible idea, as it never expanded much further beyond just giving them names.

Add replay value? That wasn't the intention at all. It was simply to cash in on one of the more popular FFs. Zeromus really wasn't hard, but was much harder in FF IV hard type. He was still a joke in the DS remake, but I found it stupid that I couldn't even use Bahamut on him. That is stupid, and it is nothing else. I scratch my head at your comments, especially the part about getting those familiar with FF IV, a new way to play the game, surely that can't be your best argument.

I don't know why the remake gets so much hate. I've been playing the game religiously since I first learned how to read and I found no legitimate issue with the game. If you're a purist you can completely ignore the extra abilities they incorporated into the game. The only legitimate complaint I've ever heard was over the music being different which I can actually appreciate. In general though, it seems like people just hate on this game to fulfill some false sense of superiority. "Yeah, I only like hard type because I'm that hardcore".

I thought it was great, I've played through it maybe six times now and will absolutely play again in the future. The FFIII remake was pretty awesome too. You sir, strike me as somebody who just likes to nitpick. I'm reminded of another friend who bad mouths and refuses to play FFIV simply because he can't have four characters in the back row.

MG, yeah there are just more counter attacks period. Some of them are more brutal, too. If you aren't prepared for Scarmiglione the first time you fight him he will counter attack and just demolish you. The game took the counter attacking quite far in an effort to add an extra sense of difficulty, which it achieves the first time around. By the time you're ready for a second playthrough though, you pretty much know what to expect and the bosses are only slightly more difficult than their incarnations in earlier releases.

Likewise, I don't get all the hatred for the DS remake. My only issue with it is that the Augment system wasn't explained well at all and that it could have benefited from having the dungeons and features from the Advance version. Sure, the models could have been more neatly polished, but the game looks beautiful otherwise.

Overall, I'm still in love with the DS version because it fixed a lot of the issues that plague the game, such as healing magic's effectiveness (or lack thereof), the inventory limit, making Edward useful when you first get him, and just generally little details such as Fabul a more distinct appearance.

I like the PSP version as well, so it's kind of a 60/40 thing since the PSP version gives us the Advance enhancements.

I love every version of IV and have happily purchased each of them.

The DS remake is fine so like the two comments above, don't really know where all this hate is coming from.

The voice acting is superb espically Kain's voice, the music is fine and the battle system upgrade is great and the changes from the SNES original fit in fine.

The only complaint within the DS remake is the change of Cecil's character, in the SNES version he seemed more forgiving, loyal and like a actual knight but in the DS version he seems a little whiny, emo and annoying and less forgiving.

SNES Cecil all the way.
