Caves of Narshe Forums > 2017 Regalia Playlist Championship > LB: #11 Ending Theme (FF10) v. #7 Searching for Friends (FF6)

Posted by: Rangers51 12th December 2017 12:51
The first of two matchups in our loser's bracket to determine fifth place, both the FF10 Ending Theme and Searching for Friends had good runs before losing out in the quarterfinals just now, with the former losing to Liberi Fatali and the latter to Corridors of Time.

The Ending Theme for Final Fantasy X incorporates previous themes with its own melodies, a pattern familiar to players of prior games in the series. Final Fantasy X also keeps a strong theme throughout its soundtrack, with many of its themes repeating phrases from others, making this overture-style ending theme a tightly integrated part of the overall score.

Searching for Friends is likely better known as the overworld theme for the World of Ruin in Final Fantasy VI, with its title made obvious to anyone who has completed that game. Most people reading this probably already have its melody in their heads, with hours upon hours spent hearing it over the years. It won a couple matchups last time before falling to Cyan's Theme in round 3.

I've still found Searching For Friends to be the weaker track. While FF10's ending theme does have more material to work with and is more through-composed, SFF does try to make up for it with a very nice melody. Thing is, FF10's ending theme also has nice melodies for much of it.

The instrumentation isn't an issue in this case except for a thing in SFF that just plays A's repeatedly at different octaves. I'm not sure what to call that instrument, but I've also felt that it's a bit out of place. I think it might be meant to be a higher-pitched percussion?

The ending of this particular cut of FF10's ending theme does sound like it has a portion out of place too, but that portion at least feels satisfying on its own.

I like SFF, but really, it's the representative of FFVI that remains? Ugh. I can name ten tracks that are easily better than almost everything remaining.

Well, it's an ending theme. That shouldn't be a knock against it, or something it has to make up for.

I don't mean to keep attacking you, lol. Maybe music is something we strongly disagree with! Sorry.

I think Balance Is Restored is one of the final four actually. This is the Loser's Bracket.

Also that quote is a typo; I wanted to say that SFF has a very nice melody.

Oooh whoops. Sorry. I see what you're saying now. Disregard my post.

Except the part that there are at least ten different songs in FFVI that are better than SFF in FFVI.

The part of the Ending Theme I recognize is done better in To Zanarkand, imo. The rest of the track is just meh to me. Searching for Friends, otoh, is a great, memorable track all the way through.
