I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I really prefer the NES graphics over the Origins or DoS graphics. I think it would be cool to have the old graphics and music combined with at least the updated menu system and harder bosses. I wish there were options to turn off and on all the various updated features of the reduxes, like say I don't like the new dungeons in DoS, or I want a challenge so I'll cancel the new MP system, or frag it all and go full on Famicom version.

It probably won't happen, but it'd be cool.

I agree, but why does everyone say they play the Famicom when we have the NES? Japan has the Famicom.

Sure, the original graphics have some lovely nostalgic charm, but I absolutely love what they did to the game for the PSP, and to a lesser extent the GBA. I'm not sure that it would have ever been a good financial move to do what you're suggesting, but it does seem like it would have been perfectly possible to add in the original version to one of the remakes, given that you could pack the original game ten times over into one of the newer versions, I'd guess.

As to Chell's question, I'm not sure I've ever seen ANYONE at these forums other than this poster call it a Famicom instead of an NES, but that's hardly the topic here, eh?

Yeah. The old graphics give me a warm fuzzy feeling of a simpler time.

And sorry for going off-topic.

Given the by now longtime existence of NES ROM hacking, I'm sure it's possible to hack the new gameplay elements into an FF1 NES ROM.

Fairy Fencer F ADF
Pokémon Perfect Crystal

finished so far this year:
Gato Roboto

True, but what about some of the other things they added, like Phoenix Downs? Unless it's just the system, you'd have to completely edit the game's code to fix things like that.

A guy that went by the handle Disch(o) wrote a program called FFHackster that you can easily use to modify all kinds of variables to a FF (NES) Rom. All of the common stuff like the weapon's special modifications that don't work (Rune Blade, etc) is easily fixed as well as the bugged spells.

Adding an option like Phoenix Down is beyond that and would require extensive hacking. Seriously though, adding those in with MP and some other factors made Dawn of Souls game-breakingly easy... and I'm not a masochist for challenge by any means.

Someone actually made a FF1 hack that includes Phoenix Downs and stat-boosting items. It also integrates the boss music from the remakes. Give it a try.

I have all except the GBA

NES,PS1 and PSP but wish they would release 1-3 in NES graphics. For not some Virtual Console but a disc or cartridge on the handhelds.

I also have some sort of aversion to the wonderswan graphics they put into the remakes, but it might just be the degree to which I appreciate the simplicity of the classic ones.

I'm replaying the NES version now, and, truth be told, it's an incredibly slow game on the NES, but I find that this gives the game a good deal of it's charm. The long grinds, the hard dungeons, they all make up this game, and I must say, I vastly prefer the long hard road to the more paved remakes.

^ Slowness in RPGs has always annoyed me, so I disagree on that bit.

^^ I doubt they'll do that because they'd be competing basically with the fan-translations of the NES versions--with little to no niche for themselves. The same retro gamers who prefer 8-bit graphics and care enough for these games will probably have found the translations already.

The thing of it is, I have to believe that the game designers made the game a particular way with a particular objective in mind. Thus, the fact that the Silver Sword costs 4k when you first get to Elfland, and there's no goddamn way you're ever going to be able to afford that at this point in the game without some serious grinding, has a point to it. Between the sword, spells, and armor, you're guaranteed a long grind before you can get everything new, which in turn prepares you for the marsh cave dungeon, which if you run into right away, will whoop your ass.

So, when the updated versions of the game come out, and not only are the battles nerfed (see: auto-retarget, for just one example), but the cost of things too, you can see why I'm disappointed. The reason FFI was a challenge was these things. When you remove them from the game so that people can just play their way through the story without any issue, it defeats the purpose, and, I think anyway, diminishes the feeling of accomplishment.

Instead of making battles slow to discourage players from grinding, how about making them faster and then making healing resources more scarce?

My new selection. Thanks for the find.

You guys should give this one a shot. It's very very good.
