Caves of Narshe Forums > General Gaming Chat > Unreal Tournament 2K4 by CoN (or, "Losers, PLAY.")

I've noticed a decline in playership for the CoN UT2K4 server over the last couple months, so Tiddles and I decided that a little bit of promotion might be in order.

I have set up a server to play UT2K4 from my home, and CoN members are all invited to it. We don't play THAT regularly, but we probably would play a lot more if other people were interested. We play pretty much the basics, with several custom maps and all up-to-date patches (there's a new one with some new maps, by the way, that all current players should grab). We don't check license keys. We don't advocate stealing the game, but we don't check keys.

There have been some horsepower issues with my server in the past, but I'm ordering a new machine in the next couple weeks that we think will alleviate some of that problem - so we're looking for new blood. If you're not a jerk, have broadband, and are of any skill level in UT, let us know so we can get you into some games. If you're a Half-Life snob, grow up and get out of your tiny little clique and come play with us. If you don't care, well, then you're probably in the majority. But we hope you'll at least try us out.

When he says any skill of UT, he really means that. I regularly get squashed like a frog (OMG french dude said Frog, so funny!) and I still have fun. That is when my own computer lets me have my way...

If i had UT (any of them) I would play...
alas, I dont

But y'know, I might actually grab a legit copy of it. It's gotta be bargain bin affordable by now and I'm tired of cd key failure only allowing me to play LAN hosted games.

Hm.

I haven't wielded a flak cannon in years. You may see me soon.

It's easy to get these days. eBay, bargain bin, whatever. No excuse.

This is really the sort of thing that's part of the community, or at least the community as it has been in the past. If you all out there like playing FPS at all, you'll get it eventually. smile.gif

I'm interested but it would probably be about 1'oclock in the morning (at the earliest) over here when you start playing. Shame, I like a good game of Unreal Tournament2004 online. My skill is about average.

We don't often play during the week, though we might in a couple weeks when I have a week off. When we do, it usually starts around 10pm GMT (or earlier if I can find players).

Weekends we'll start anytime, really, if I'm around or know that people want to play so I can start the server.

Eventually, ClimPC will be upgraded so it can run UT2K4, at which point the server will probably run 24/7.

Posted by: fatman 14th January 2006 22:02
Oh well in that case, please count me in. thumbup.gif

I have the mega bonus pack, which I believe is the most recent upgrade. I've had the game about a month, great stuff!

I played UT a lot on the PS2 a couple of years ago, brilliant fun! Although it was dire in multiplayer on the PS2, lol.

What game modes do you guys play the most?
Mainly Death Match? I enjoy most of them.

Posted by: BASSsic 15th January 2006 00:24
I was pretty hooked back in the old days of UT, even the original Unreal. I can get some 6-disc UT2k4 from Amazon for a tenner, new and sealed. The thing I like about them is the scalability, I grabbed the demo of the game when it first came out and was happy with the smooth online experience I got on this lame system. I might double check the demo if it's still going around, but it looks like some all-out UT action would go alongside Guild Wars quite nicely since that all I play online right now.

Yeah, I might get it and I'd love to join yah.

My only worry is playing it off my big external harddrive, it's USB. sad.gif

If this demo plays alright I'll add it to my order tonight.

PS: I'm all about CTF, throw in Assualt too. I'm a terrible gunner/fragger but give me a role to do within a team and I'll do you well. 2Face, yo!

Posted by: Tiddles 15th January 2006 09:35
We tend to play most gametypes - we use MapMixer to rotate through different gametypes for consecutive matches rather than playing several rounds of one type or using mapvote. CTF seems to come up most often with DM and LMS close behind. Onslaught comes up fairly often; Assault less so just because there are fewer maps (at least until we can convince everyone to get the last bonus pack), and there's even a bit of Bombing Run occasionally... which everyone hates except me, but hey.

Posted by: BASSsic 15th January 2006 13:53
Yup, well, the demo runs as sweet as I remember and I ordered last night. Everything preloads so running off the external harddrive doesn't end up too slow. Slightly longer loading times then maybe a slight pause once a game, I can deal with that though.

See you in there soon then.

I'm more of an original UT kind of player, call me old fashioned but 2k3 or 2k4 just didn't have the same appeal to me as the original. If, however, I do decide to reinstall 2k4 on my computer, I'd gladly throw down the gauntlet and pwn the CoN members foolish enough to play with me smile.gif

If you guys are ever on classic UT let me know, I play that on a nightly basis.

(Here's hoping that 2k7 is friggin' awesome.)

You might find this useful, then: http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/ut/2004/

It's a bit out of date, because there's been a massive patch that supercedes a lot from that page and we haven't gotten around to updating. Download the three maps, and mapmixer; then visit unrealtournament.com and http://unrealtournament.com/news/view.php?id=2996, which will install every other map we run, as well as patch your version to bleeding-edge-new.

This information is useful to everyone who wants to play, of course.

Edit
And almost forgot - I have just ordered two things that, among other things, will increase the usability of UT for us. One, I have a new laptop, shipping to me on Thursday, that will play UT2K4, which means I can serve dedicated instead of just listen - that should help performance somewhat. Additionally, if all goes well I should have fiber internet by next weekthat will give me more upstream pipe.

Yesterday, I got a new computer, which, being slightly better than my current machine and not so packed with files and viruses and such, gives me incentive to actually get my shit together and 'acquire' UT. Computer Colin, the guy who countless times has fixed my computer and charged an extortionate fee for it, is coming 'round tomorrow to get everything set up and, unexpected circumstances permitting, I hope to have UT by Sunday evening at the very latest.

Now, I oughta mention that I'm absolutely abysmal at FPS'. I mean, like 'Wonder where that gunfire is coming from, JUMP ABOUT SHOOTING IN CIRCLES, die.' That bad. I look forward to getting humiliated. thumbup.gif

I'll defenitely give it a try while my brother is gone since there's praticly no time that he'd let me use his computer.

You know, playing UT on a 801mHz, 128mb RAM and a totally outdated graphics card, it may be hard to run such a game... or even install it.

I'll be there at light speed! Um I mean 56k speed...

The game is back on, boys and girls. We're adding some new models later today, but you can start getting back into it now. Our dear friend Climhazzard now has a server that runs 24/7 (unless I'm working on it), and we're looking for all broadband players.

For more information, you'll want to go to http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/ut/2004/. It's got up to date patches and all the bonus content we've added. We're still working on maplists, so the more feedback we get the better we are. Once you have everything downloaded and installed, come to chat or PM me for the server password.

I've seen six players on simultaneously and the server seems fine, so definitely reinstall this game and get involved! For those wondering, the current participants include me, Tiddles, Dragon_Fire, Hanyou, Kappa, Zero_Hawk, and Shinrin.

I added several new models to the server today; I think most everyone who plays has them by now, but just in case, check them out. We've got a few more players now, among them Cazboab, Del S, Narratorway, and Neal.

Posted by: Rangers51 17th September 2007 21:54
Today we saw four new maps get added. Two are upgrades of maps that had bugs, and two are UT2K4 upgrades of classic UT99 maps.

Hey, R51... do you guys still play regularly? (I assume you do, being as you're still updating the server with new maps)

I haven't played 2K4 as much as I have the original, but I'd be willing to jump in with some of you guys. It'd be a lot of fun.

Send me a PM or something with the details (unless I missed them as I scanned this thread... in which case a simple bonking is in order!) and I'll be sure to stop in and say hello with a flack cannon!

EDIT: Duh. I found the link to the CoN/ut2k4 site. Nevermind! I look forward to fragging with you all!

Check in with Chat the first time you get ready to join our server, and you can see who's around and get the server password. Look forward to it!

Haven't updated this in a while, but we really do have a pretty good server set up now - I've upgraded my internet and Climmy's hardware to reduce ping and load time, and we've added a ton of new custom content. So, anyone who might still play this or might be interested, you can get it http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html%3FASIN=B000IMNK0C%26tag=cavesofnarshe-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=/o/ASIN/B000IMNK0C%253FSubscriptionId=1Q8Z03NBH8N6QY1PV9G2, and then download all the fun new stuff to hook up with us.

EvilEye just showed me this, and it made me bump this old and now irrelevant thread.
