Terra's Trance/Morph Command-the first Limit Break

I had finished Final Fantasy 9, and started playing FF7 before 6, and I've noticed the evolution of Trance and Limit Breaks. In FF9 it's also an important part of the story, with trance being caused by intense emotions or even a desire to protect. In FF7 Limit Break seems to be more of a burst of power from being attacked or attacking repeatedly, giving the ability to use an extra strong move once before the limit gauge resets. In Final Fantasy 6 though, Terra is the only character who can use the Trance/Morph command because she is the only character who is half esper. Like FF9's Trance, she does not attack only once before reverting back to normal , but unlike 9 and 7 this form does not give any special abilities, only strengthened attack and magic. Also, I heard something about FF8 having Limit Break. Is this true? I've not played that game yet.

I see what you're going for there, but I've always considered the more rare "desperation" attacks that most of the characters in FF6 have to be more in line with what eventually became limit break-style attacks. I think that works a bit better as an analogue because most characters have them, just like FF7 limits or FF9 trances, and because they require getting roughed up in combat to trigger them. The big difference, of course, is that Morph is user-selected, as you point out, versus being random and rare.

I dunno, just my two cents on that! But I will say that, yes, FF8 does have Limit Breaks. smile.gif

You're right that Morph, unlike FF9's Trance is user-selected, as well as being unique to Terra, but I don't have much experience with desperation attacks, and don't really know if they can be compared in the same way. In FF7 the option to use a limit break move replaces the normal Attack command until selected, while in FF6, Morph is Terra's special command for most of the game.
These are just my observations and comparisons.

So Rangers is correct FF6 does have limit breaks in fact you may never ever see them because they very very rarely occur even when near death . I remember seeing them as a kid thinking they were a glitch because if you pushed your cart a certain way or some dust gets in all of a sudden General Leo might get in your party.

Trance is not a limit break. In fact Terra/Tina does have a desperate attack called Riot Blade. Way back when even the official strategy guide did not have all the information in fact saving CID was listed as impossible. So when I discovered you can save CID and have an alternate opening to the WoR It made me think anything is possible

Link below will show all desperate attacks aka what would become the limit breaks

There was, in fact, no guide printed in the USA for Final Fantasy III (6) at the time of release that had Squaresoft's Logo on it or claimed to be "Official," but the guide I got (Nintendo's) looked like this:

And has this on page 82:

... I don't know which "Official Guide" you were reading, but this one had Nintendo's name on the cover. Pretty sure that makes it an officially licensed Nintendo product, at the very least (as was Final Fantasy III at the time of its US Release. Says it right when you boot up the game, "Licensed by Nintendo").

That said, yeah Trance/Morph is only retroactively similar to the Limit Break System of FF7 because it was revisited (as were a lot of classic FF game ideas) in FF9, and they sort of combined it with the Limit Break System. I highly doubt Hiroyuki Ito hangs out around here, but that'd be the guy to ask.

Thanks for showing me that video, His Shadow. I've never seen any of those desperation attacks in-game, though I've heard people mention Terra's Riot Blade in other topics.
Trance/Morph and Limit Break seemed related, but I guess maybe it was a similar idea at most.

I did not save Cid when I played through the game the first time. I wouldn't think anyone does on their first try. My dad, who loves Square Enix games and has played FF6 multiple times, knew that I had finished the World of Balance, so he came up and asked if I had saved Cid. I told him no, and that when I looked it up online, Google's answer was just to feed him fish. Then he explained to me that there was more than one quality of fish.

Your father should have obviously sent you to CoN sooner. biggrin.gif

This thread showed me that all the CoN videos of the desperation attacks are not currently working - we've had them on the individual character pages for over ten years, but I was serving them in a terrible way. I should get that fixed when I'm not so underwater at work.

Don’t worry about it I for example did not know you could save Shadow until my 14+ play through.

I remember experimenting with so much as a kid so it was hard to tell what was a glitch and what was not.

You are correct using the word official was my mistake. I should of said many of the guides that were written that I purchased at video game stores.

Considering the time period of FFVI that is the best we had then. I'm sure they could have tweaked it at the time though think of production costs, management, energy, and the desire to release it. biggrin.gif

If we were to combined many games like crossovers and/or have all the Final Fantasy games into one game we must balance it out. The game must favor the human player for marketing purposes.

I don't know the nature of your FFVI gameplay in this case. The game can be beaten with only FIGHT and ITEM Command. Anything you do in the game can make it more challenging for you or easier based off your knowledge and experience.

Why we all fell in love with Final Fantasy and games in general, right? cool.gif

Spoiler: Terra's 'Morph' ability is important on low level runs though in high level runs, other scenarios, ect., I didn't find it as useful as the other abilities of the cast. thumbup.gif
