Caves of Narshe Forums > Final Fantasy VI > Not cool!

I do not think it is cool how people have jumped on the bandwagon of bashing this port for no good reason.

It may just be another port of FF6, but that's all it is, and people are acting like its something a lot worse than that, and I don't think it's cool at all, and I wanted to say so.

I like this port of the game, it has music that never drops the bass out because the sound effects are playing, and it's not on the Gameboy Advance, though it might as well be.

Anyhoo, laziness of the porting process aside, I wonder what bad things can be said by people who've actually bothered to play the PC version. I myself find it kind of clunky when it comes to driving vehicles (Chocobos, Airships), which is unacceptable to me as this was one of my favorite parts of the original. I additionally do not like the sound effects; they were lazily processed in from the GBA version and that version has sound effects that are just plain wrong.

No one has bothered to study the sound effects work of the SNES version in 20 years...I say Minoru Akao did his homework, the sfx in FF6 are pretty good. They oughtn't be dragged through the mud this way.

The PC port deserves all the flak, though for the wrong reasons. More like instead of taking it out on the DRM, as should be, this world as usual proves just how wrongly wrong it is and complains about the wrong things.

The Android version however is probably the best edition of FF6. Distinguishable sprites, menus that don't feel dizzying enough, *cough*cough* SNES version, translations that are so off when compared to Translattery's work which is used in the most superior Android version... and seriously, its one of the few Final Fantasies that can let me issue commands to any single party member without 'cycling' through every single one of them to reach who I want. Plus there's the Album to boot off. Nifty feature. And the built-in music player.

What, the wonderfully done sprites are putting you off? Not my problem. Get the SNES port and suffer, is all I'll say.

There is also the music too that has a problem too.

The sprites look bad for the characters the grass and everything looks cartoony, and the size of buildings is off putting.I like that there is a redoing of all the text to be a good translation of the original fixing up any errors and it's pretty cool to have the ability to choose spells fast.

I'm not an elitist, I am just upset ff6 didn't get a 3D remake and that the graphics look like rpg maker game.

I certainly am not interested in 'remakes' or the sorts. Plus I don't get the want for 3D. The game is perfectly fine after the additions it got, and I'm happy about that.

I kind of wonder if part of this thread is directed at me personally, because I have been vocal in chat about my disinterest in the port based on what I've seen. Maybe that's unfair to the game, but I don't think I need to justify it any further than that, honestly. I'm a grown man who has very limited time for gaming, and if the game doesn't look good to me, I'm not going to pay for it even if it's a version of one of my favorite games of all time. Really, that fact works against it - because it's a game I've played end-to-end a dozen or more times, that makes it even less likely that I'd put down coin to play it again at this point regardless, and the things I don't like about it simply don't help that case.

Coming from that point of view, I think the fact that you lead with saying "no good reason" implies just as much bias on your side as you might apply to the bandwagoners out there. I think the issues I (and the bandwagon!) have with the visual presentation of the game are no less valid than the issues you have with the sound effects or vehicle travel. It's just different things appeal or fail to appeal to different people. I don't think I should have to play the game to have an opinion on what I can see directly in front of me in screenshots and videos.

The high-res sprites are okay, I guess.

The Amano portraits are pretty crud, in my opinion. No, I don't have much liking for Amano's art.

Also really neat to find out that the PC version contains the GBA version.

For anyone who would earnestly like to read a decent summary of why some people have complained about the graphics, here are two articles discussing some of the technical missteps involved, and presenting some potentially preferable alternatives. (The first is about FF5, but most of the points are relevant, and not repeated in the specific FF6 discussion.)

Unfortunately, Spooniest, last time I made you aware of these articles, you cried and ran away because someone had an opinion that differed from your own. I mean, fair enough: anyone who agrees with you must be supremely tasteful, and everyone else must only disagree because they have some ulterior motive and a burning desire to get in with the cool kids, or because they're just dumb and wrong I guess, I dunno.

Look, if you like the port, that's fine. Agree to disagree. I'm happy that you've found something you enjoy. Please don't insist that everyone else has to be just as happy with it, or that all dissenting opinions must come from bandwagon-jumping haters, or that someone should spend money to replay a game they've already finished and enjoyed just to see whether it changes their opinion on something that can be perfectly well judged from screenshots and videos. If you would rather discuss it in those terms, the Steam forums are always open.

Tiddles is right and I played the game to death so it would require something new to get me interested, as I know ff6 by heart.

I rather like Amano's art, but much like the scenery, the enemies, and the character sprites, none of it fits together into the same aesthetic. If the entire game looked like it were drawn by Amano, with actual faithfulness to style, I might be interested. Really, if any one of the styles being used were applied universally, I might be into it.

Tiddles: Those articles are wonderful, and gave technical reasoning for some of what I found so unpleasant about looking at this port.
